However, the geographic source of the Mekong is still arguable because of the complexity of the Mekong source water system, inaccessible environment and the varied technologies used by those explorers and scientists. The satellite remote sensing technology has been used to pinpoint the source of the Mekong, associated with the on-the-spot investigations made by the authors in June 1999 and September 2002. The actual length of the Mekong has also been calculated.展开更多

Satellite data interpretation was adopted to obtain the general situation of Xinjiang’s land desertification in assistance with the sampling method and on-the-spot investigations. Related monitoring and investigations showed that Xinjiang was facing with severe wide range land desertification, and its desertified area made up 77.08% of the total monitoring area. As for land types, the desertified farmland accounted for 1.92% of the total monitoring area, desertified woodland 4%, desertified grassland 45%, and unused land 49%. Accordingly, as for desertification degrees, non-desertified land occupied 22.92%, weak desertified land 5.69%, medium-degree desertified land 16.58%, severe desertified land 33.19% and super severe desertified land 21.61%. Finally, as for inducing factors, wind-eroded desertification made up 58.23%, water-eroded desertification 8.69%, salinization desertification 6.52% and frozen-melt eroded desertification 3.64%. Xinjiang’s land desertification tended to get worse and the harnessing mission remained hard.展开更多

Results of different source mechanism resolutions show that a 10 -3 MPa Coulomb stress due to the Mani earthquake was added to the fracture fault of the Kunlun earthquake, and this may shift the broken date to about 10 years earlier, and infer that the stress level in the crust is not low. Comparing the relationship between strong earthquake strength and frequency and earth rotation change, it is shown that the strength’s decrease and the variation period’s shortening of earth rotation are important controlling factors on strong earthquake activity. This great event with M S =8 1 took place probably due to a gradual strengthening background of regional stress field within the Qinghai_Xizang block in the period of acceleration of change of day’s length and stress triggering from the Mani earthquake.展开更多

Utilizing the "direct demodulation image reconstruction method", HXMT will perform broad band(1-250 keV) survey of large sky areas in scanning mode, which can result in source detection characterized with high sensitivity and spatial resolution. Point observation is another key working mode of HXMT, and is specified for observations of galactic bright sources like X-Ray Binary(XRB) and others. Additionally, HXMT also has a powerful capability developed for monitoring gamma-ray bursts, which is quite unique in the world due to its energy coverage of 200 keV-3 MeV and largest detection area. The HXMT satellite was launched by a Long March 4 B(LM-4 B) rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on June 15, 2017. The payloads onboard HXMT are a High Energy X-ray Telescope(HE), a Medium Energy X-ray Telescope(ME), a Low Energy X-ray Telescope(LE), and a Space Environment Monitor(SEM).This paper introduces the main technical aspects of the satellite, including scientific objectives, technical features, mission design, and system design.展开更多

This paper analyzed several methods of atmosphere water range correction (AWRC) using Seasat, Geosat, TOPEX and ERS-1 data, especially the calculated delay path using brightness temperature of TMR on TOPEX and EMR on ERS-1; and discussed some other problems of AWRC.展开更多

The study used the expecting value model and the third person effect concept in analyzing the perceptions of the UAE's youths towards the practices of local channels. The sample of the study was 200 male and female from several emirates. The study concluded that 88% of the audience in UAE watch the UAE satellite channels. Dubai channel comes in the top most watched channels, followed by Sharjah Channel, then Abu Dhabi channel. Most of the audience watch these channels in their homes. 78% of the audience watch the TV social programs. The most watched program is Khatwa program in Abd Dhabi channels, followed by shabnaa program. The reasons for watching the social programs are: finding relieve from their problems (66%), the diversity of these programs (64%), and the popularity of social programs' anchors (5%). The most discussed issues are Youths problems and unemployment (91%), local problems (73%), divorce issues (31%). They said that these programs encourages for persevering the local heritage (62%), respect the family values (51%), and social traditions (48%). While the most positive features of the social programs are: promote the local anchors (90%), the most negative features are promoting the western values (94%), and discussing some issues which are not fit with the local traditions (88%). In general the study found that the local TV channels played an important role in social changes in UAE.展开更多

We derive an NPP estimation algorithm from ground measurement data on temperate plants in Japan. By the algorithm, we estimate NPP using a vegetation index based on pattern decomposition (VIPD) for the Mongolian Plateau. The VIPD is derived from Landsat ETM+ multi\|spectral data, and the resulting NPP estimation is compared with ground data measured in a semi\|arid area of Mongolia. The NPP estimation derived from satellite remote sensing data agrees with the ground measurement data within the error range of 15% when all above\|ground vegetation NPP is calculated for different vegetation classifications.展开更多

Three improvements have been applied during the data processing: (1) DN saturation is adjusted by adopting a linear regression, which has a lower root mean square error than the ratio regression used by LIMA; (2) solar elevation angle is calculated using pixel-level latitude/longitude and the acquisition time and date of the central pixel of the scene, improving slightly upon the bi- linear interpolation of the solar elevation angles of scene comers applied in LIMA; and (3) two additional image bands, Band 5 and Band 7, are sharpened using the panchromatic band (Band 8) and a Gram-Schmidt Spectral Sharpening algorithm to more easily distinguish snow, cloud and exposed rocks. The final planetary reflectance product is stored in 16-bit bands to preserve the full radiometric content of the scenes. A comparative statistical analysis among 12 sample regions indicates that the new mosaic has enhanced visual qualities, information entropy, and information content for land cover classification relative to LIMA.展开更多
