FO performances including water flux and bidirectional transport of succinate and chloride anions were systematically examined using cellulose triacetate-based FO membrane. Additionally, real seawater was explored as draw solution. Experimental results revealed that the pH-dependent speciation of succinic acid can affect the FO performances. Ionization of succinic acid at higher solution pH enhanced the osmotic pressure of feed solution, thus leading to lower water flux performance. A strong effect was pointed out on the succinate rejection for which nearly 100% rejections were achieved at pH above its pKa2 value. The rejection of succinate increased in the following order of chemical form: C2H4C2O4H2 〈 C2H4C2OH- 〈 C2H4C2O24-. With real seawater as the draw solution, low to moderate water fluxes (〈4 L. m- 2. h- 1 ) were observed. The divalent succinate anion was highly retained in the feed side despite differences in the succinic acid feed concentration at pH of approximately 6.90.展开更多

This letter presents an adaptive feature preserving bidirectional flow process, where an inverse diffusion is performed to enhance edges along the normal directions to the iso-phote lines (edges), while a normal diffusion is done to remove artifacts ('jaggies') along the tangent directions. In order to preserve image features such as edges, angles and textures, the nonlinear diffusion coefficients are locally adjusted according to the first order and the second order directional derivatives of the image. Experimental results on the Lena image demonstrate that our interpolation algorithm substantially improves the subjective quality of the interpolated images over conventional interpolations.展开更多

Flow is caused by a bidirectional stretching surface. Series solutions are constructed for the velocity and temperature fields. Convergence of series solutions is ensured graphically and numerically. The variations of key parameters on the physical quantities are shown and discussed in detail. Constructed series solutions are compared with the existing solutions in the limiting case and an excellent agreement is noticed. Nusselt numbers are computed with and without magnetic fields. It is observed that the Nusselt number decreases in the presence of magnetic field.展开更多

This trend comes together with the development of smaller decentralized generation units, like PV (photo voltaic). Together with the change on demand side that comes with the global "electrification", this can lead to serious grid congestion in low voltage grids and massive grid investments in solving this congestion. Smart charging can partly solve this issue, but with using a connected EV (electric vehicle) as a small distribution unit, combined with bi-directional charging or V2G (vehicle-to-grid) technology, these investments can be reduced to a minimum. In Lombok, Utrecht, the Netherlands, an innovative pilot was initiated with smart solar charging stations, shared electric vehicles and AC (alternating current) V2G technology. This unique combination proves that EVs are an opportunity for the grid rather than a threat. A unique partnership with OEM Renault was established to develop an AC V2G vehicle product line and work on open standardized communication between the EV, the charging station and the grid.展开更多

A new bi-directional airfoil, obtained by lowering the bent airfoil camber and thickening the bone line bi-directionally, is proposed. Two bi-directional axial flow pumps, with the SA blades and the arc airfoil(AA) blades, respectively, were designed to verify the applicability of this airfoil. By comparing the hydraulic performances of the two pumps obtained from the experiments, and the cavitation performance and flow field of the two pumps obtained from numerical simulations, it was found that AA blades can improve both the hydraulic and cavitation performances under a low flow rate and near the best efficiency flow point(BEP), whether in forward or reverse operation for the bi-directional axial-flow pump. Furthermore, the hydraulic performance of the AA blade pump declines sharply in a large flow rate compared to that of the SA blade pump. The location and composition of the inhomogeneous flows inside the impellers of the two pumps are similar. However, the SA blades work on fluid, mainly at the front half of the blades, which is a distinctive feature from the AA blades and may be a universal phenomenon in all SA-type blades.展开更多

In this paper, the authors address this issue in an idealized set up through simple shallow water models for the interactions between equatorially trapped waves and the barotropic mode, which supports Rossby waves that propagate poleward and can excite midlatitude teleconnection patterns. It is found here that the interactions between a Kelvin wave and a fixed meridionai shear (mimicking the jet stream) generates a non-trivial meridional velocity and meridional convergence in phase with the upward motion that can attain a maximum of about 50%, which oscillates on frequencies ranging from one day to 10 days. When, on the other hand, the barotropic flow is forced by slowly propagating Kelvin waves a complex flow pattern emerges; it consists of a phase-locked barotropic response that is equatoriaily trapped and that propagates eastward with the forcing Kelvin wave and a certain number of planetary Rossby waves that propagate westward and toward the poles as seen in nature. It is suggested here that the poleward propagating waves are to some sort of multi-way resonant interaction with the phase locked response. Moreover, it is shown here that a numerical scheme with dispersion properties that depend on the direction perpendicular to the direction of propagation, namely the 2D central scheme of Nessyahu and Tadmor, can artificially alter significantly the topology of the wave fields and thus should be avoided in climate models.展开更多

Much work has focused on the hierarchical control of the DC, AC, and hybrid microgrids, but little has considered the hierarchical control of multiple parallel BPCs that directly connect the DC microgrid to the AC utility. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical control for parallel BPCs of a grid-connected DC mierogrid. To suppress the potential zero-sequence circulating cm-cent in the AC side among the parallel BPCs and realize feedback linearization of the voltage control, a d-q-O control scheme instead of a conventional d-q control scheme is proposed in the inner current loop, and the square of the DC voltage is adopted in the inner voltage loop. DC side droop control is applied to realize DC current sharing among multiple BPCs at the primary control level, and this induces DC bus voltage deviation. The quantified relationship between the current sharing error and DC voltage deviation is derived, indicating that there is a trade-off between the DC voltage deviation and current sharing error. To eliminate the current sharing error and DC voltage deviation simultaneously, slope-adjusting and voltage-shifting approaches are adopted at the secondary control level. The pro- posed tertiary control realizes precise active and reactive power exchange through parallel BPCs for economical operation. The proposed hierarchical control is applied for parallel BPCs of a grid-connected DC microgrid and can operate coordinately with the control for controllable/uncontrollable distributional generation. The effectiveness of the proposed control method is verified by corresponding simulation tests based on Matlab/Simulink, and the performance of the hierarchical control is evaluated for prac- tical applications.展开更多

Impulse turbines with linked guide vanes and fixed guide vanes have been tested at the Indian Wave Energy plant. This was after initial experimentation with Well's turbines. In contrast to the Well's turbine which has a linear damping characteristic, impulse turbines have non-linear damping. This has an important effect in the overall energy conversion from wave to wire. Optimizing the wave energy plant requires a turbine with linear damping and good efficiency over a broad range of flow coefficient. This work describes how such a design can be made using fixed guide vane impulse turbines. The Indian Wave Energy plant is used as a case study.展开更多
