A dual-ship-towed marine electromagnetic (EM) system is a new marine exploration technology recently being developed in China. Compared with traditional marine EM systems, the new system tows the transmitters and receivers using two ships, rendering it unnecessary to position EM receivers at the seafloor in advance. This makes the system more flexible, allowing for different configurations (e.g., in-line, broadside, and azimuthal and concentric scanning) that can produce more detailed underwater structural information. We develop a three-dimensional goal-oriented adaptive forward modeling method for the new marine EM system and analyze the responses for four survey configurations. Ocean-ottom topography has a strong effect on the marine EM responses; thus, we develop a forward modeling algorithm based on the finite-element method and unstructured grids. To satisfy the requirements for modeling the moving transmitters of a dual-ship-towed EM system, we use a single mesh for each of the transmitter locations. This mitigates the mesh complexity by refining the grids near the transmitters and minimizes the computational cost. To generate a rational mesh while maintaining the accuracy for single transmitter, we develop a goal-oriented adaptive method with separate mesh refinements for areas around the transmitting source and those far away. To test the modeling algorithm and accuracy, we compare the EM responses calculated by the proposed algorithm and semi-analytical results and from published sources. Furthermore, by analyzing the EM responses for four survey configurations, we are confirm that compared with traditional marine EM systems with only in-line array, a dual-ship-towed marine system can collect more data. 展开更多

In this paper, we investigate a class of mixed initial-boundary value problems for a kind of n × n quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws on the quarter plan. We show that the structure of the pieeewise C^1 solution u = u(t, x) of the problem, which can be regarded as a perturbation of the corresponding Riemann problem, is globally similar to that of the solution u = U(x/t) of the corresponding Riemann problem. The piecewise C^1 solution u = u(t, x) to this kind of problems is globally structure-stable if and only if it contains only non-degenerate shocks and contact discontinuities, but no rarefaction waves and other weak discontinuities. 展开更多

Stabilization of Hyperbolic Chaos by the Pyragas Method

For a long time it was a common opinion that hyperbolic attractors are artificial mathematical constructions. However, in the recent papers there were proposed physically realizable systems that possess, in their phase space, the set with features that are very similar to hyperbolic type of attractors. As is known, invariant sets are called hyperbolic attractors of the dynamical system if they are closed, topologically transitive subsets, and every their trajectory possesses uniform hyperbolicity. Very familiar types of the hyperbolic attractors are Smale-Williams' solenoid and Plykin's attractor. Further, it is well known that chaotic systems are very sensitive to the external perturbations. This property is used for controlling nonlinear systems and chaos suppression. Thus, an important question arises: Is it possible to suppress chaos in systems with hyperbolic attractors because these attractors are structurally stable subsets? In the present contribution we study the possibility of stabilization of chaotic oscillations in systems with the Smale-Williams hyperbolic attractors by means of the Pyragas method with a delay. It is shown that by means of external perturbation the dynamical system could be controllable: the hyperbolic attractor degenerates into a periodic one. 展开更多

Three new isostructural binuclear transition metal complexes with azido ion and 1,2-bis(3-(pyridin-2-yl)-lH-pyrazol-1- yl)ethane (bppe), formulated as [M2(N3)2(bppe)2](C104)2 (M = Co, 1; Ni, 2; Cu, 3), were successfully synthesized. They were structurally and magnetically characterized. In 1-3, the double azido ions link two adjacent octahedral metal centers together in the end-to-on mode (EO), with the M-NEo-M angles of 99.41°, 100.24° and 99.80°, respectively. The co-ligand bppe acts as terminal ligand to saturate the remaining coordination sites. The magnetic properties of 1-3 have been investigated in the tem- perature range of 2-300 K. Fitting of the magnetic susceptibility data revealed the occurrence of the strong ferromagnetic in- teractions [J = 26.32 cm-1 (1), J = 38.23 cm-1 (2) and J = 139.83 cm-1 (3)]. Density functional theory calculations have been performed on 1-3 to provide a magneto-structural correlation of the ferromagnetic behavior. 展开更多

It has an (n - 1)-dimensional invariant surface called carrying simplex E as a globe attractor, hence the long term dynamics of the system is com- pletely determined by the dynamics on E. For the three-dimensional system, the whole dynamical behavior was presented. It has a unique positive equilibrium point and any limit set is either an equilibrium point or a limit cycle. The system is permanent and it is proved that the number of periodic orbits is finite and non-periodic oscillation the May Leonard phenomenon does not exist. A criterion for the positive equilibrium to be globally asymptotically stable is provided. Whether there exist limit cycles or not remains open. 展开更多
