The parameters of principal and directional extrema in a marine environment are important in marine engineering design, especially for appropriate construction of oceanic platforms and other structures. When designing wave walls and break water structures, the orientation of the breakwater or seawall depends mainly on the direction of the strongest waves. However, the strength of the breakwater and the elevation of the seawall depend on the magnitude of the biggest wave height of the strongest waves. Thus, identification of directional extrema plays an important role in the design of wave factors. When calculating the directional extremum, different materials may require different specific computational methods, yet few theoretical studies have been conducted in this field of research. Based on multivariate extremnm statistical theory, this paper utilizes a discrete random variable to build a joint probability model compounded by a discrete random variable and a multivariate continuous random variable. Furthermore, this paper provides the first investigation on the theories and methodologies to deduce wave directional extrema. The results provide tools for both creating the calculation method of the directional extremum value and providing the rational directional extremum parameters for marine engineering design. 展开更多

Volume Estimation of Small Scale Debris Flows Based on Observations of Topographic Changes Using Airborne LiDAR DEMs 被引量:1

This paper describes a geographic information system(GIS)-based method for observing changes in topography caused by the initiation, transport, and deposition of debris flows using highresolution light detection and ranging(LiDAR) digital elevation models(DEMs) obtained before and after the debris flow events. The paper also describes a method for estimating the volume of debris flows using the differences between the LiDAR DEMs. The relative and absolute positioning accuracies of the LiDAR DEMs were evaluated using a real-time precise global navigation satellite system(GNSS) positioning method. In addition, longitudinal and cross-sectional profiles of the study area were constructed to determine the topographic changes caused by the debris flows. The volume of the debris flows was estimated based on the difference between the LiDAR DEMs. The accuracies of the relative and absolute positioning of the two LiDAR DEMs were determined to be ±10 cm and ±11 cm RMSE, respectively, which demonstrates the efficiency of the method for determining topographic changes at an scale equivalent to that of field investigations. Based on the topographic changes, the volume of the debris flows in the study area was estimated to be 3747 m3, which is comparable with the volume estimated based on the data from field investigations. 展开更多

Gasification efficiency is an important factor that determines the actual technical operation as well as the economic viability of using a gasifier system for energy production. In this study, the impact of the physical properties of torrefied bagasse and the influence of gasifier design and operating variables were investigated in a computer simulated downdraft gasification system. Results obtained from the study indicated an interrelationship between feedstock characteristics, especially with regard to feed size, design variables such as throat angle and throat diameter as well as gasifier operating conditions such as temperature of input air and feed input. These variables influenced the efficiency of the gasification process of sugarcane bagasse because of increased enhancement of combustion zone reactions, which liberated huge amount of heat that led to a rise in the temperature of the gasification process. This condition also created increased tar cracking within the gasification system, contributing to reduction in the overall yield of tar. 展开更多

For structure system with fuzzy input variables as well as random ones, a new importance measure system is presented for evaluating the effects of the two kinds of input variables on the output response. Based on the fact that the fuzziness of the output response is determined by that of the input variable, the presented measure system defines the importance measures which evaluate the effect of the fuzzy input variable. And for the random input variable, the importance measure system analyzes its effect from two aspects, i.e. its effect on the central distribution position and that on the fuzzy degree of the membership function of the output response. Taking the effects of the two kinds of input variables on the first moment and second one of the output response into account, the definitions of the importance measures of the input variables are given and their engineering significations are demonstrated. Combining with the advantages of the point estimates of Zhao and Ono, a solution of the proposed importance measures is provided. Several examples show that the proposed measure system is comprehensive and reasonable, and the proposed solution can improve computational efficiency considerably with acceptable precision. 展开更多

This paper considers ranked set sample based on the auxiliary variable X which is correlated with the study variable Y, where (X, Y) follows Morgenstern type bivariate exponential distribution. The authors discuss the optional allocation for unbiased estimators of the correlation coefficient p of the random variables X and Y when the auxiliary variable X is used for ranking the sample units and the study variable Y is measured for estimating the correlation coefficient. This paper first gives a class of unbiased estimators of p when the mean 0 of the study variable Y is known and obtains an essentially complete subclass of this class. Further, the optimal allocation of the unbiased estimators is found in this subclass and is proved to be Bayes, admissible, and minimax. Finally, the unbiased estimator of p under the optimal allocation in the case of known θ is reformed for estimating p in the case of unknown θ, and the reformed estimator is shown to be strongly consistent. 展开更多

The proposed parametric estimators are shown to be asymptotically normal, and the estimators for the nonparametric part are proved to converge at an optimal rate. To construct confidence regions for the regression coefficients and the nonparametric function, respectively, the authors also propose the empirical-likelihood-based statistics and investigate the limit distributions of the empirical likelihood ratios. The simulation study is conducted to compare the finite sample behavior for the proposed estimators. An application to an AIDS dataset is illustrated. 展开更多
