Under the narrative strategies of the otherworld lies Nabokov's aesthetic ethics, which make those who label Nabokov pessimistic and indifferent to be aware of his persistent attempt to push beyond the boundaries of human consciousness and his sincere concern and deep sympathy for the misery of men.展开更多

One of the most underrated Christmas Books, The Chimes (1844), proves to be an excellent example of a new fairy tale portraying the pervasion of two spheres: the realm of fantasy and the truth. The narrator exposes the correlation between the disturbing vision of the animated metropolis and the protagonist's hallucinatory fancy caused by his inner unrest and agitation, questioning the boundary between the dream and reality and the limits of perception. Despite the technical restraints of the seasonal miniature's construction, Dickens succeeded in capturing the hero's psychology and the spirit of the city through the medium of anthropomorphising the inanimate, employing the supernatural, and implementing powerful, semantically loaded images of London corresponding well with the protagonist's inner dilemmas. The narrative strategy balancing on the edge of dream and reality employed in the carol does not only expose the creative skills of the novelist, but also the potential of The Chimes as an embryonic novel展开更多

Within th...This paper examines the projection and reception of strategic narratives in the realm of Chinese nationalism and the impact of contemporary official nationalist discourse on Beijing's foreign policy making. Within the analytic framework of political symbolism, the paper dissects the divergent national identities reflective in different semantic and syntactic relationships inherent in the state-crafted historical narratives in contemporary China. In the post-Tiananmen era, the signification of the traumatic symbol of national humiliation in modem Chinese history, projected in the form of strategic narratives by the Party-state in patriotic education, has given rise to a societal force that threatens to internalize the historical conflicts on the foreign relations fi:ont. The counter-effect of strategic narratives, which has constrained the rationality of the state's foreign policy making, implies that collective memory is not an on^ztemand resource for the authoritarian regime to exploit to enhance its legitimacy. The relationship between the Chinese state and society as the constructor and consumer of communicative nationalism cannot be simplistically dichotomized.展开更多

This paper attempts to analyze the two distinctive narrative strategies--re-characterization and second-person narration, skillfully deployed by Carter in order to rewrite Perrault' s classic tale into a feminist story. In Carter's version, Little Red Riding Hood is represented as a witty new woman who embraces her own sexuality and regards herself as a subject rather than an object. Through the transposition between reader and character, Carter's tale produces a new subject position for readers, particularly for young female readers.展开更多
