Since the release of crude oil exports, with the recovery of crude oil production and improved export infrastructure in the United States, U.S. crude oil exports have been growing rapidly, with an average of about one million barrels/day in 2017, making the U.S one of the major global crude oil exporters. Currently, the AsiaPacific region has replaced North America as the first major destination for U.S. crude oil exports. In light of future trends in the oil refining industry of the Asia-Pacific region, it will usher in a new wave of refinery operations around 2020 and crude oil imports will continue to grow rapidly. The American region, represented by the United States, will replace West Africa as the second largest source of crude oil imports to the Asia-Pacific region, and that energy trade cooperation between the Asia-Pacific region and the United States will continue to grow. In particular, for China, the United States will become an important source of crude oil imports for our country in the future, and the two countries will shift from the past of energy competition to energy cooperation. Sino-US energy trade will play a more active role in economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.展开更多

The study is to present our two-year experience in transumbilical LESS simple nephrectomy (LESS-SN) for non-functioning kidney, in an effort to evaluate its feasibility, clinical outcomes and potential advantages. Methods: From December 2008 to December 2010, a total of 11 patients with body mass index (BMI)≤30 underwent transumbilical TriPortTM LESS-SN by a single experienced urologist at our institution. The indications for nephrectomy included nonfunctioning kidney associated with ureteropelvic junction stricture (n=l), ureteral calculi (n=6), tuberculosis (n=3), and ureteral stricture (n=l). Patient demographics perioperative and follow-up data were prospectively collected and analyzed. Results: Ten procedures were successfully completed with one patient converted to open surgery due to uncontrollable bleeding. The mean operative time was 189.2 (ranging 100-320 min) with an estimated blood loss of 204.5 (ranging 50-1 000 ml). There were two complications of bleeding (1- intra-, 1- post-). The mean hospitalization after surgery was 7.9 d (ranging 4-17 d) With a regular follow-up of 1, 6, 12, and 24 months after surgery, all patients remained symptom-free with an intra-umbilical scar. Conclusion: Transumbilical LESS simple nephrectomy for nonfunctioning kidney can be accomplished with favorable surgical outcomes and a superiority of cosmesis. However, cases with chronic inflammation are not suitable for initial up-take and should only be attempted by the very experienced laparoscopist.展开更多

The TVPA 2000 and its subsequent reauthorizations in 2003, 2005, and 2008 were put forth to increase the scope, focus, and effectiveness of US efforts to combat human trafficking. In-depth analyses of each reauthorization provide an understanding of the aims of the TVPA. The evolution of the TVPA reauthorizations dearly demonstrates that the US is committed to thwarting human trafficking both domestically and internationally. The analyses examine strengths and weaknesses of the legislation and provide insight as to how the TVPA reached its current state as the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008 (TVPRA 2008). Drawing from the evolution of TVPA legislation, the future of the human trafficking phenomenon and legislation is discussed.展开更多

Many of these researches focus primarily on Jewish or Italians, but rarely address at Italian Jews as a whole, and, in their relation with Italian American and Jews. One of the reasons of this paucity of studies, might be the little number of Italian Jews who immigrated to the United States, especially in New York in the 1930s and 1940s, that drove several scholars not to pay really attention to this tiny group in ignoring their presence. Thus, this article aims to investigate through some memoirs, interviews and autobiographies the life of Italian Jews who were living in New York and the Metropolitan area during and after War World II, with particular emphasis to those who were born there in these years and their formation of an American identity. This essay will also clarify an Italian Jewish identity--which made Italian the role of memory and "nostalgia" in an Italian identity--above all Jews a unique group and a minority within a minority.展开更多

The former deals with the journey across the Mexican-American border in a literal sense; the latter describes the metaphorical borderlands separating Latina/os from Anglo-Americans in the USA. Nava's depictions emphasize family to counter the popular media stereotypes of Chicana/o as gang members. "El Norte" expresses immigrants' displacement and disillusionment with the American Dream, while "Mi Familia" places Mexicans within the history of LA (Los Angeles) and translates Latina/o culture into a narrative familiar to the mainstream audience.展开更多

Using the OECD STAN Bilateral Trade Database by Industry and End-use Category to calculate the share of U.S. intermediate products used in the manufactured goods China exports to the U.S., this paper finds that the "U.S. content" in China's exports of manufactured goods to the U.S. increases with the technology content of the goods and shows a decreasing trend over time. From 2006 to 2010, the average "US. content" in China's exports of manufactured goods to the U.S. was 1%, and such content in China's exports of high-end manufactured goods was 1.6%. On this basis and using the employment-output ratio in the U.S. Employment Demand Matrix, this paper concludes that as many as 1.71 million jobs have been created by the U.S. intermediate products used in China's exports of manufactured goods to the U.S. during the same period. Thus, the development of Sino-U.S. trade has a positive impact on the job market in the U.S.. By contrast, instead of improving the employment situation in the U.S., the RMB appreciation proposed by the U.S. might even have a negative effect.展开更多

Earliest attempts to interpret and explain Uruguayan secular society came in the 1960s from Uruguayan scholars. Typically, these studies were produced by religious practitioners, or at least researchers sympathetic to religion, who attributed weak religiosity, at least weak Catholicism, to two factors: the lack of a colonial heritage and European immigration. Counterfactuals to the "weak institution" and the "social base" claims are based on new research, especially as it pertains to immigration and settlement patterns among Italian and Spanish immigrants. The counter-arguments presented here, while not entirely invalidating the "social base" and "weak institutional church" claims make it more difficult to assume that urban demographics and ecclesiastical history in Uruguay are significantly correlated to the secularization of Uruguayan society. This study is important because it creates theoretical space that should stimulate researchers to consider alternative causes for Uruguayan secular society that provide greater explanatory power by integrating historically contingent evidence in the context of theoretical explanation展开更多

As one of the first countries to join the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Armenia has a strong interest in assessing the biodiversity of its native flora and identifying threats to the conservation of these species, particularly those with economic value. Only limited information, however, is available at this time on the genetic biodiversity, population location, structure and size, and conservation status of most of these species. This paper reports the results of five consecutive years of field studies conducted in Armenia to 1) re-locate native populations of the important medicinal and culinary herb, Origanum vulgare L., 2) locate new populations, and 3) assess the growth pattern and dynamics of the populations. The quadrat sampling technique was used to identify key elements that determined population size and abundance. GPS maps of present and past population distributions were created. Particular habitat and environmental factors were identified as crucial to predicting the future conditions of these populations under the impact of global climate change. The research provides a baseline dataset that can be used for the development of further conservation strategies of this important medicinal and culinary species in Armenia.展开更多
