The authors have completed a study on the construct validity of CET-6 reading comprehension (RC) tests with both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Based on the quantitative data on strategy use collected through self-reporting questionnaires, the authors used verbal reporting to further examine the RC test taking process. Comparing their findings through the two approaches, the authors attempt to evaluate the verbal reporting method. The findings through verbal reports can be used in validating other research instruments such as the self-reporting questionnaires, or in examining the validity of the multiple-choice RC tests. The authors conclude that verbal reports are incomparably useful in exploring the examinees' cognitive activities. But its difficulties in operation may diminish the reliability of the collected data. Some implications are given for the prospective researchers who employ similar methods for their studies.展开更多
