从语序、被动句、几种否定形式、轻微转折句的构成、句子成分的外加与省略这五个方面,对湖南华容方言的句法特征作了语言学的详细探索。

On image and English grammar analysis

As a term of cognitive psychology, image is closely related to grammar analysis. The present paper takes English as an example and through the analysis of parameters--basal body and side, selection, angle of view, degree of detail, prominence, which constitute different images, to demonstrate the relationship between image and English grammar analysis.

Critical analysis on turn-taking organization in English news interview in China

As a special type ofconversation, news interview, its special turn-taking organization founds the basic conversation pattern. This paper tries to explore something hidden behind people turn-taking, i.e., the influence of power, ideology on language use except the cooperation. The researches showed the IR and IE obey the rules of turn-taking system under the Q-A format. In the news interview, the disagreement between interviewees is direct and usually ended by the interviewer with institutional power. And in the process, the influence of the power and ideology on the turn-taking is reflected clearly： The IR with the institutional role, he or she can interrupt or insert their turn-taking to control, direct the talk as intended plan.

Effects of Topic Structure and Syntax on Boundary Pitch Variations

This paper reported an acoustic experiment examining the effect of topic structure and syntax on boundary pitch parameters. Simple discourses containing three sentences were constructed and the boundary between the first sentence and the second sentence of each discourse varied along the following parameters： （1） topic internal, clause; （2） topic shift, clause; （3） topic internal, sentence; and （4） topic shift, sentence. Seven native speakers of Standard Chinese read the short discourses aloud. The offset f0, f0 Max, and f0 Min of the first sentence and the onset f0, f0 Max, and f0 Min of the second sentence were measured. It was found that relative to topic internal condition, topic shift condition induced higher onset f0 following the boundary. Moreover, this higher onset f0 was caused by the raising of both f0 max and f0 min, suggesting pitch register raising rather than pitch range expansion following the boundary. Syntactic structure as index by clause or sentence was found to have no effect on boundary pitch parameters. These results provide strong evidence for a role of topic strucutre in speech production

Word-Guessing Ability in English Reading Comprehension of Non-English Major Students in Private University

In order to provide English as a foreign language students with effective English language learning approaches, this investigation is focused on how students deal with words when they are doing reading material. It is found that most students can use some skills to guess the unknown words in reading materials, such as explanatory analysis skills, syntactic analysis skills, and structural analysis skills, while they have overlooked how these words are organized metaphorically and metonymically. This investigation will provide students with the target language knowledge metaphors and metonymy, examining the impact on computer vocabulary guessing and reading comprehension through teaching the concept of metaphor and metonymy. In this research, the new word-guessing skill based on the knowledge of metaphor and metonymy was applied to word-guessing teaching in reading comprehension of computer material. The research question is studied in this experiment： Can the training of using ways of word-guessing base on the knowledge of metonymy and metaphor promote students＇ ability of word guessing in reading comprehension of computer material？ The results show that students have gradually paid attention to the word-guessing skill in reading process. The skills based on the knowledge of metaphor and metonymy have helped students get the right meaning of the unknown words in computer reading materials. It has really enlarged students＇ vocabulary and improved their confidence in finishing reading.

Improving Phrase-Based Statistical Machine Translation Models by Incorporating Syntax-Based Language Models

This paper proposed a method to incorporate syntax-based language models in phrase-based statistical machine translation (SMT) systems. The syntax-based language model used in this paper is based on link grammar,which is a high lexical formalism. In order to apply language models based on link grammar in phrase-based models,the concept of linked phrases,an extension of the concept of traditional phrases in phrase-based models was brought out. Experiments were conducted and the results showed that the use of syntax-based language models could improve the performance of the phrase-based models greatly.
