At present, China is in an important period of adjustment and optimization of industrial structure, vigorous development of new industries, and the higher vocational education undertakes the arduous task of improving the quality of workers and cultivate specialized personnel, who are an indispensable important force in the process of modernization. It is related to the future development of education, but also to the overall development of economy and society of China. Taking Jiangsu Vocational College of Agriculture and Forestry as an example, the existing problems in higher vocational education teaching were pointed out based on the analysis on its sustainable development status, and the corresponding countermeasures and suggestions were proposed.展开更多
Teaching design incorporating a sense of sustainability to architecture students is a challenge today, primarily because of the trend to label every design as sustainable or green even though it is no different from a...Teaching design incorporating a sense of sustainability to architecture students is a challenge today, primarily because of the trend to label every design as sustainable or green even though it is no different from a more traditional one. The result is a "green-washed" education in architecture. To address this issue, this paper describes a teaching methodology of architectural design with a special focus on sustainability implemented in the Graduate School of Architecture in Clemson. This method includes an analysis of the location, the climate conditions, the materials needed and the construction process. Knowing that sustainable design is generally perceived as being expensive, there is a special focus on simplicity and affordability. Rather than relying on expensive technical solutions, students are encouraged to design for the given environment and apply passive strategies. In the approach discussed in this paper, the design process is a number of logical scientific decisions rather than an intuitive draft. The goal of this pedagogy is to raise awareness about how to handle global resources carefully and to show the importance of the later performance of the project as a key to design. The teaching strategy is described here along with the successful participation by our graduate students in a number of refereed competitions.展开更多

The focus of traditional education has shifted from ideas, wisdom, and the love of learning to...Virtue education in the United States has lost its clout while the corporatization of higher education may be at its peak. The focus of traditional education has shifted from ideas, wisdom, and the love of learning to having a corporate mindset on progress and skills-based knowledge. In many cases, the focus of attention is on remaining viable/sustainable in times of economic decline rather than learning itself, so the resources supporting institutions of higher education are directed into marketing and public relations practices instead of the infrastructure for thinking and learning. This essay draws together three coordinates to make a case for a return to virtue education in the United States. First, the current condition of higher education is shown to have dubiously strayed from a virtue model. Second, the re-emergence of philosophy as a preferred major and its growth in the academy suggest that people realize that something has to change in higher education as they revert back to a broad liberal arts emphasis. Third, a discussion of virtue education from the lens of Josef Pieper's virtue philosophy, grounded in the lSta Contemplativa, offers renewed possibility to reengaged higher education for a sustainable future. Together, I suggest that the tradition of higher education in the United States is no longer viable and return to a virtue education model is an alternative that might make higher education sustainable.展开更多

Simultaneously, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD...In the period following the beginning of the global economic crisis, the quality of the education provided to support the accounting profession was debated. Simultaneously, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is becoming increasingly important. The change in the accounting profession and in accounting education offers an opportunity to formulate initial observations on the Italian university world in terms of the preparation of future professional accountants. This study uses the International Education Standards (lESs) published by the International Accounting Education Standards Board (IAESB), in particular the IES 2 (content of professional accounting education programs). The aim of the paper, which is of an empirical nature, is to understand the role of universities in Italy in the preparation of accountants in the light of the IES 2 provisions. The study and its policy implications may contribute to the debate on accounting education at national and international levels, also in the light of ESD.展开更多

The education of prospective teachers should be based on ecological approach, which ensures the ecological perspective and an opportunity for students to develop their readiness to integrate into the school environment. The main aim of the author's research is to substantiate mentoring as an interaction system for the facilitation of the prospective teachers' readiness to integrate into the school environment. The author of this paper offers the results of her theoretical research: substantiation of mentoring's importance in teachers' education, substantiation of mentors' roles and functions, and substantiation of ecological approach in teachers' education. Ecological approach in teachers' education facilitates the formation of friendly attitude toward a school as an educational environment. Mentoring provides the prospective teachers' readiness to the professional activity and ability to successful integration in various types of school environment, considering their specificity. The author applied the following research methods: experience reflection, studying, analysing, and evaluating of scientific literature.展开更多
