This paper on Umberto Eco's contribution to the narration process, tries to identify the mainstream of modem studies of the text. I have tried to separate it as an entity, which together with other textual techniques and strategies shall create applicable theoretical messages towards an artistic creation. Eco's (1994) work itself, gives an opportunity to exemplify his theoretical claims. Using my examples, I have tried to show how a work of art can be rendered narrative, a subject to contemporary techniques and cooperativeness with the reader. One of the main issues I have explained is the time factor, seen from the linguistic and semiotic prospective. I consider that Eco's treatment of the relation between reality and fiction is of a semiotic nature. One of the main elements it contains (and definitely makes such a difference possible), is the time factor. The delay (lingering) part treats works of art separately, and gives one of the ways to render artistic works readable, worth having an aesthetic value, in their way to transmitting a message to the audience. 展开更多

In today's globalized world with English as the lingua franca, many countries, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), are focusing on English as a medium of instruction (EMI). Due to the many expatriates resident in the UAE English has become the main language of business, industry, and higher education. This paper looks at one of those English medium universities with an American curriculum. Since most American curriculums require substantial amounts of writing, it is important that students become competent at writing in their second language at this particular institution. This paper discusses how a novel assignment, allowing English as a foreign language (EFL) students to present readings in the classroom at an EMI university in the UAE, has helped them become both better readers and writers. Since the majority of the students are native speakers of Arabic, the project was designed with their oral traditions and proficiency in mind. 展开更多

Recent calls for promoting students' critical thinking (CT) abilities leave second language (L2) teachers wondering how to integrate CT into their existing agenda. Framed by Paul and Elder's (2001) CT model, the study explores how CT could be effectively taught in L2 writing as a way to improve students' CT skills and L2 writing performance. In this study, an infusion approach was developed and implemented in actual classroom teaching. Mixed methods were employed to investigate: (1) the effectiveness of the infusion approach on improving students' CT and L2 writing scores; (2) the relationship between students' CT and L2 writing scores; and (3) the effects of the infusion approach on students' learning of CT and L2 writing. The results of the statistical analyses indicate that the infusion approach has effectively improved students' CT and L2 writing scores and that there was a significant positive relationship (r=0.893, p〈0.01) between students' CT and L2 writing scores. The results of the post-study interview illustrate that the infusion approach has beneficial effects on students' learning of CT and L2 writing by bridging the abstract CT theories and interactive writing activities and by integrating the instruction and practice of CT into those of L2 writing. 展开更多
