G-STEP (GMES--space technology exchange partnership) is the University of Leicester's flagship project for innovation, training and education in GMES (global monitoring for environment and security) and GIS (geographical information systems) based technologies. G-STEP (part funded by the ERDF) is the first GMES accelerator initiative in the UK and is breaking new ground in the application of GMES and GIS. The core G-STEP team initiates and develops Knowledge Exchange Practices between the University and Life Long Learning partners in the East Midlands Region, through training packages and collaborative research projects. The programme integrates innovative research, to direct downstream applied training, supported by analytical processing of attendee assessment data. Collated information derived from these sources presents a unique opportunity to incorporate a statistically viable feedback cycle, making G-STEP the interface between pure and applied research, thus initiating downstream dissemination to groups and small business. In this paper, we outline the GMES and GIS training packages, and the route to market to increase uptake of underused data streams via university and regional entrepreneurs (start-ups) and established small business with a core interest in utilisation and dissemination of novel technologies in sustainable lifelong learning.展开更多

Unified and aligned working methods are needed. Project alignment is the process of ensuring that key stakeholders share a common understanding of the project mission, goals, objectives, tactics, work processes and plans and have the required competences and skills. Based on current advances in the area of collaborative networked organizations, project management and Internet web 2.0 technologies, the authors have identified further needs and opportunities for development in the area of Collaborative Project Management. The Project Alignment Booster is a set of software services used to promote collaborative project management. The tool has been developed to suit industrial requirements in the area of large and complicated engineering project management, The paper reports the results of developing a toolkit to support collaborative project alignment.展开更多

First, based on the option game features PPP projects have, the paper proposes some research hypotheses on value, income, cost for the option. Second, on the basis of the decision path of a multi-stage binary tree model, respectively for the public sector and the private sector, the paper builds up utility functions, the cost-input model and the contract decision model. It indicates that by the use of growth options in the shortened contract period, the private sector can still ensure the construction quality of the PPP project. Finally, the validity of the model in the PPP project agreement and the investment decision process is verified by the case analysis.展开更多

Each service class is considered an independent and competitive entity offered by each provider, which aims at maximizing its own utility. Based on noncooperative game, we prove the existence and uniqueness of equilibriums between QoS levels and prices among various service classes, and demonstrate the properties of equilibriums. Finally, these results are verified via ntunerieal analysis.展开更多

From the angel of project, it is assumed that alliance members work together to process a project with equipment, labor force and capital. The greatest output of project could be forecasted. Afterwards, on the basis of constructing utility function of profit, resources constraint, resources input risk, synthetically utility function is obtained. With above work, the neural network model is established under the condition of many cooperative members. Finally, using one kind of new neural net means, we have carded on the imitation resolution as to the variable value of the latter model.展开更多

The State of Michigan's average daily traffic database of year 2001 has been used as a case study. The study was applied only on the very common US Bridge with RC (reinforced concrete) deck over steel girder. Sampling criteria also includes the age of the bridges. The study covered the four-cost-impact categories provided by the NCHRP (National Cooperative Research Program). The current truck weight and double traffic volume (AS2) show the best scenario to meet the increase in freight demand. However, doubling the truck weight with the current traffic volume (AS 1) was the worst scenario. The use of the proposed 97-kip truck with the current traffic volume (AS3) compromises both, meeting the increase in freight demand and the cost impact.展开更多

In this paper, current status in China is firstly presented regarding policy making, technology research and development, pilot project and international cooperation. Then the opportunities of exploring CCS are analyzed from the viewpoint of application potentials, cost and China's circumstances. The challenges to CCS are pointed out with respect to energy consumption, technologies, funding and environment. Finally some suggestions are put forward on CCS development.展开更多

We present two examples from the Thai component of the research program to show how different disciplines and stakeholders need to cooperate at different scales to make meaningful scientific contributions towards sustainable land use and rural development in mountainous regions. The case of resource conservation in the Thai highlands shows that local and scientific knowledge, conven- tional surveys and participatory modeling can be creatively combined. Integrated research on the potential of integrating fruit trees and associated technologies into mountain farming systems suggests that natural scientists have to work alongsideeconomists and social scientists to avoid harmful effects of purely technology-driven and productivity- enhancing approaches. The success of new technologies cannot be measured solely by adoption rates and yield increases, but also needs to take into account their long-term impact on various groups of farmers and the ecological, economic and social trade-offs that they entail. Technical and institutional innovations need to go hand in hand to provide viable livelihood opportunities for smallholder farmers in mountain watersheds. The major lesson learned from the first six years of our research in the mountains of Thailand and Vietnam is that conventional and participatory approaches are not antagonistic; if scientists from various disciplines and research paradigms are open-minded, the combination of both approaches can produce meaningful results that cater for the needs of both the academic community and local stakeholders in mountain environments.展开更多

Beside the theoretical foundation of the course subject, the students were introduced to several professional skills such as: decision making tools, technical review meetings, interaction with customers, and teamwork skills. The design challenge was to develop a bike rack to meet a list of technical and marketing constraints. Details of the project requirements are presented with a brief overview of the main project mentoring tools. Students' creativity is discussed through two samples of the student work. Although the university-industry collaborations have been mainly conducted by large companies in Japan so far, the small-medium companies rather than large companies are accumulated in regional areas. However, there are a lot of problems in the university-industry collaborations of the small-medium companies. In this paper, the collaborations between small-medium companies and universities are analyzed based on joint research projects. The results show that the joint research projects of small-medium companies for collaboration partners are not conducted enough. Moreover, the results also show that the average budget per project of small-medium companies is low according to the detailed data of Niigata University. The active area of company and university in research and development is discussed. The stage map that proceeds to commercialization for the collaborations between small-medium companies and universities is made and discussed. Based on these results, the problems of the university-industry collaborations of small-medium companies for collaboration partners are extracted.展开更多
