For the prediction of ENSO, the accuracy of the model including the parameters, initial value and others of the model is important, which can be retrieved by the variational data assimilation methods developed in recent years. However, when the nonlinearity of the model is quite strong, the effect of the improvement made by the 4-D variational data assimilation may be poor due to the bad approximation of the tangent linear model to the original model. So in the paper the ideas in the optimal control is introduced to improve the effect of 4-DVAR in the inversion of the parameters of a nonlinear dynamic ENSO model. The results indicate that when the terminal controlling term is added to the cost functional of 4DVAR, which originated from the optimal control, the effect of the inversion may be largely improved comparing to the traditional 4DVAR, as can be especially obvious from the phase orbit of the model variables. The results in the paper also suggest that the method of 4DVAR in combination with optimal control cannot only reduce the error resulting from the inaccuracy of the model parameters but also can correct the parameters itself. This gives a good method in modifying the model and improving the quality of prediction of ENSO. 展开更多

With the motivation to improve the simulation of the East Asian summer monsoon(EASM) in coupled climate models, oceanic data assimilation(DA) was used in CAS-ESM-C(Chinese Academy of Sciences–Earth System Model–Climate Component) in this study. Observed sea surface temperature was assimilated into CAS-ESM-C. The climatology and interannual variability of the EASM simulated in CAS-ESM-C with DA were compared with a traditional AMIP-type run.Results showed that the climatological spatial pattern and annual cycle of precipitation in the western North Paci?c, and the ENSO-related and EASM-related EASM circulation and precipitation, were largely improved. As shown in this study, air–sea coupling is important for EASM simulation. In addition, oceanic DA synchronizes the coupled model with the real world without breaking the air–sea coupling process. These two successful factors make the assimilation experiment a more reasonable experimental design than traditional AMIP-type simulations. 展开更多

In this paper, a numerical modeling tool is described which can be used to explore various aspects of four dimensional variational data assimilation and parameter estimation arising in geophysical, environmental, biological and engineering sciences. A major component of this tool is a coupled chaotic dynamical system obtained by coupling two versions of the well-known Lorenz (1963) model with different time scales which differ by a certain time-scale factor. A tangent linear model and its adjoint are considered that correspond to a coupled chaotic system. The general idea of applying sensitivity measures (sensitivity functions) to coupled systems, emphasizing the data assimilation aspects, is explored as well by the forward sensitivity approach. For this purpose the set of sensitivity equations is derived from the nonlinear equations of the coupled dynamical system. To estimate the influence of model parameter uncertainties on the simulated state variables the relative error in the energy norm is used. 展开更多

A regional coupled prediction system for the Asia-Pacific(AP-RCP)(38°E-180°,20°S-60°N) area has been established.The AP-RCP system consists of WRF-ROMS(Weather Research and Forecast,and Regional Ocean Model System) coupled models combined with local observational information through dynamically downscaling coupled data assimilation(CDA).The system generates 18-day forecasts for the atmosphere and ocean environment on a daily quasi-operational schedule at Pilot National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology(Qingdao)(QNLM),consisting of 2 different-resolution coupled models:27 km WRF coupled with 9 km ROMS,9 km WRF coupled with 3 km ROMS,while a version of 3 km WRF coupled with 3 km ROMS is in a test mode.This study is a first step to evaluate the impact of high-resolution coupled model with dynamically downscaling CDA on the extended-range predictions,focusing on forecasts of typhoon onset,improved precipitation and typhoon intensity forecasts as well as simulation of the Kuroshio current variability associated with mesoscale oceanic activities.The results show that for realizing the extended-range predictability of atmospheric and oceanic environment characterized by statistics of mesoscale activities,a fine resolution coupled model resolving local mesoscale phenomena with balanced and coherent coupled initialization is a necessary first step.The next challenges include improving the planetary boundary physics and the representation of air-sea and air-land interactions to enable the model to resolve kilometer or sub-kilometer processes. 展开更多
