Ground micro-tremor signals were observed and analyzed by fast Fourier transform method (FFT). The response of ground soil to frequency of ground micro-tremor is revealed, and func- tions with frequency-dependence and frequency-selection of micro-tremor for different foundation soil strata are also researched. The horizontal to vertical spectral ratio (H/V, Nakamura technique) of micro-tremor observed at the surface ground was used to evaluate the site’s predominant period. This paper also discusses the application of micro-tremor on site safety evaluation, and gives the observed calculation results obtained at multiple points. The experimental foundation and the deduction process of the method are described in detail. Some problems of the method are pointed out. Potential use of the technique’s good expandable nature makes it a useable means for preventing and reducing disaster’s harmful effects.展开更多

First, the ground response wave (named LS-R wave) of a soft soil site with deep deposit, taking long-period bedrock seismic record as input, was calculated by wave propagation method. After that, a TOMAKOMAI station long-period seismic record from the Tokachi-Oki earthquake and conventional E1-Centro wave were also chosen. Spectrum characteristics of these waves were analyzed and compared. Then, a series of shaking table tests were performed on a 1:50 scale super high-rise structural model under these seismic waves. Furthermore, numerical simulation of the prototype structure under these excitations was conducted, and structure damages under different intensive ground motions were discussed. The results show that: 1) Spectrum characteristics of ground response wave are significantly influenced by soft soil site with deep deposit, and the predominant period has an increasing trend. 2) The maximum acceleration amplification factor of the structure under the TOM wave is two times that under the E1-Centro wave; while the maximum displacement response of the structure under the TOM wave is 4.4 times that under the E1-Centro wave. Long-period ground motions show greater influences on displacement responses than acceleration responses for super high-rise building structures. 3) Most inelastic damage occurs at the upper 1/3 part of the super high-rise building when subjected to long-period ground motions.展开更多

The displacement is obtained from the velocity by emulation, and the two results are compared and analyzed. Results of theoretical analysis and practical measurement indicate that the two results of velocity and displacement are consistent, and it is feasible that the maximum displacement amplitude ratio be replaced by the maximum velocity amplitude ratio of the direct ^-P-and ^-S- waves recorded by regional seismic networks when determining focal mechanism solutions of small earthquakes.展开更多

The result shows that the value of the corner period (T g) of the design spectrum in GBJ11-89 (China Seismic Building Code, issued in 1989) is lower than the value obtained by site seismic hazard analysis. The same situation exists when we compare the design spectra of the Codes to the spectra according to the earthquake records. The value in current seismic design code, GBJ50011-2001 issued in 2001, is greater than that in GBJ11-89, but still less than the value obtained by site seismic hazard analysis. If we accept the value got by site seismic hazard analysis, we have a suspicion that 2/3 of buildings built according to GBJ11-89 will not be safe when an earthquake with 2% probability of exceedance in 50 years occurs.展开更多

Secondly, the relationship of large earthquakes in the Hindu Kush-Pamir region and the Tienshan seismic zone is investigated, and synchronization features are found existing in the grouped large earthquakes between the large earthquakes in two regions. The relationship between intermediate-focus large earthquakes in Hindu Kush-Pamir and shallow large earthquakes in the Tienshan seismic zone is also discussed. The same synchronization characteristics are found, and the intensity and frequency of intermediate-focus earthquakes are fiercer, while large earthquakes in the Tienshan seismic zone are more intense, with a wider distribution range. The above results confirm the geodynamic correlativity between Hindu Kush-Pamir and the Tienshan seismic zone from the viewpoint of seismicity.展开更多

The A-value of the Gutenberg-Richter relation was estimated by using those data samples. Taking into account the fact that the b-value is spatially more stable than the a value, the b values were calculated at the nodes of a normal grid superposing on the whole area studied and their distribution were examined. The results show that the b values increase smoothly from 0.4 to 0.93. Furthermore, keeping the b values obtained fixed, the a value distribution was also examined. In order to display more detailed information about the seismicity, smaller cell surface (10000 km2) for the calculation of the a value has chosen. The mean return period for different magnitudes was also calculated for each small cell.展开更多
