应从“四维时空”的视域衡估国学的“四重价值”,即着眼于人类发展的共性,观照国学的普世价值;着眼于国学发生演化的特定语境,观照国学的历史价值;着眼于现代化的需求,观照国学的现代价值;着眼于后现代社会的发展趋向,观照国学的后现代... 应从“四维时空”的视域衡估国学的“四重价值”,即着眼于人类发展的共性,观照国学的普世价值;着眼于国学发生演化的特定语境,观照国学的历史价值;着眼于现代化的需求,观照国学的现代价值;着眼于后现代社会的发展趋向,观照国学的后现代价值。由是,国学现代化的基本内涵有三构建国学精神的普世价值系统;促成国学精神的“潜现代性”与现代性对接会通;提升国学精神的“类后现代主义”。国学现代化的主要路径亦有三双重批判;文化对话;现代阐释。而当代中国文化建设,则应以民族传统文化(国学)为根基,以西方文化为补充,以马克思主义为主导;同时推进民族传统文化的现代化,西方文化的本土化,马克思主义的当代化。 展开更多

It is very innovative significance that Chinese Literary Anthropology invents the Great Tradition in the new century and puts forward series of theoretical propositions and academic points based on it. The new Great Tradition transforms the opposition between the Great and Little Tradition of American anthropology, and makes the new concepts gain the legitimacy of the cultural values transferred from the old terms. It dates the second coded significance of the written culture from the material narrative and the image narrative of the oral tradition, and highlights the generative and primary of the symbolic significance. It also questions the authenticity of the written representation, endows the truth and credibility to the material and image representation, and manifests the imaginative and expression of the early human culture. Though its theoretical innovation inverts the binary opposition structure, and it wants to jump out of knowledge limits of dual structure such as structure and destruction, objective and subjective, material and spiritual. 展开更多

This paper examines the study abroad experiences of undergraduates, explores the students' values and perspectives on being global citizens, and expresses the way they think of themselves as members of the broader world community. The research was conducted by interviewing students who had experiences studying abroad. It aims to open a debate about the meanings and understandings of global student mobility which is based on the opinions and values of college students who had either long or short-term study abroad experiences. The study shows that students have grasped the transformation of globalization and are concerned with their competitiveness in the global stage. They pointed out that their higher education courses are lacking in providing enough opportunities for students to encounter the broader world. Also, students often cope with culture shock issues such as the way they interact with classmates, the attitude of contributing toward society, and the barrier to communicate using local languages. Proposed changes can start with professors, for example, by bringing the reality of other cultures into the students' learning process, by showing the common values and competencies of modern college students, and by contributing to critical thinking. 展开更多

This paper studies how different cultural values and rhetorical traditions may influence students' perceptions and understanding of effective ethos in persuasive essays. Fifty Chinese EFL (English as a foreign language) college students and 50 American college students participated in writing English persuasive essays on the selected topics. The essays were then compared for similarities and differences in the use of rhetorical appeals with a focus on ethos, the credibility, and trustworthiness of an author. The study revealed that participants from both groups established ethos as an important rhetorical tool to persuade the audience to accept their viewpoints. However, they displayed different perceptions of what effective ethos entailed. For Chinese participants, effective ethos seemed to come from using detailed explanations that reflected an author's intention to advocate an ethical or moral message based on some Chinese cultural values. But, strong ethos for American participants appeared to mean the use of evidence--facts and personal testimony--to establish the writer's trustworthiness. The interpretation of the results from the perspective of different cultural value orientations was also discussed. 展开更多

This paper analyzes and attempts to bridge the gap between popular culture's aesthetics, popularized by Camille Paglia and her work Sex, Art and American Culture: Essays (1992], and international marketing culture's aesthetics, as described by Schmitt and Simonson (1997). Popular culture and marketing rarely share the same realm of research. However, these theories start to influence each other, which are especially visible when compared with international marketing as the framework. In order to analyze the gap between popular culture and marketing culture, the author followed a cultural object, Domo-kun, as it entered the US market. Domo-kun gradually changed, including its marketing aesthetics, its significance, and meaning within popular culture after it entered the market. These meaning changes are through the process of commoditization, emotional value, and how they are reinterpreted within cultural frames and reference groups. 展开更多

Only on the basis of this new worldview can we find a new focus and a new set of values, a new way of living and acting. "Beautiful China," as a literary metaphor for the goal of constructing ecological civilization, vividly and fully expresses a completely new vision for socialist modernization with Chinese characteristics. The building of ecological civilization is a social scheme that needs to be based on clear, comprehensive, long-term and scientific ecological values, guided by ideas and regulated by institutions. While there is some virtue in previous theories on the history of literature based on the theory of evolution, class struggle and the enlightenment, when it comes to the twenty-first century, the histories of modem Chinese literature used in teaching are farfrom adequate for meeting the developmental needs of the times, society and literature. This is especially so in view of the putting forward of the goals of "putting people first" and "the harmonious society," and the great changes taking place in time and space, the function of literature and aesthetic taste. Hence there is an urgent need to restructure this history and establish a more fair, equal and reasonable system of evaluation. Such a system would have humanism as its highest principle, and truth, goodness and beauty as its three virtues.
