The vessel is a fiat-bottomed cylindrical one equipped with six-curved bladed impellers. Aqueous solutions of xanthan gum are used, which have a shear thinning behavior with yield stress. The influence of several parameters on the mixing efficiency has been investigated, namely: the stirring rate, fluid theology, impeller number and impeller clearance from the tank bottom. Our predicted results are compared with other experimental data and a satisfactory agreement is found.展开更多

The h-p finite element method is used to obtain high accurate solutions of the steady flow. The unsteady, periodic flow is simulated using the piecewise-steady approximation. Characteristics of the chaotic mixing are analyzed by examining the asymptotic coverage of a passive tracer and the lineal stretching of the fluid elements in the annulus. For the viscoelastic fluids modeled by the upper-convected Maxwell constitutive equation (UCM), our computation predicts little effect of the fluid elasticity on the mixing patterns. On the other hand, the shear-thinning viscosity, modeled by the Carreau equation, has a large impact on the advection of a passive tracer and the distribution of lineal stretching. We find that the zones of the lowest stretching match remarkably well with the regular zones in the tracer-coverage plotting. Our study reveals the vital importance of reducing the discretization errors of the velocity field in the numerical simulation of chaotic flews.展开更多

Based on the von Mises yield criterion, multilinear isotropic hardening rule and associated flow rule, the elasto-plastic finite element model is put forward to analyze the behavior of the joints, and a calculation method for the joints under bending moments or eccentric loads is proposed. It is shown by the analytical results of joint that the stiffening rib can improve the ultimate bearing capacity by 10% for joints under axial tensile load, by 40% for joints under axial compressive load, and by 50% for joints under bending moment. The unified calculation equations for joints with or without stiffening rib are put forward, which can be applied to calculating the ultimate bearing capacity of the hollow spherical joints with circular pipes under eccentric loads.展开更多

This study considers the interaction of a plane compressional sound wave with a liquid-encapsulated thermoviscous fluid cylinder submerged in an unbounded viscous thermally conducting medium. The translational addition theorem for cylindrical wave functions, the appropriate wave field expansions and the pertinent boundary conditions are employed to develop a closed-form solution in the form of infinite series. The analytical results are illustrated with a numerical example in which the compound cylinder is insonified by a plane sound wave at selected angles of incidence in a wide range of dimensionless frequencies. The backscattered far-field acoustic pressure amplitude and the spatial distribution of the total acoustic pressure in the vicinity of the cylinder are evaluated and discussed for representative values of the parameters characterizing the system. The effects of incident wave frequency, angle of incidence, fluid thermoviscosity, core eccentricity and size are thoroughly examined. Limiting case involving an ideal com- pressible liquid-coated cylinder is considered and fair agreement with a well-known solution is established.展开更多

The measuring machine can simultaneously measure the geometrical dimensions, form and position errors of the inner and outer surfaces. Since the maximum length of the workpiece can reach 2 000 mm , it is difficult to be clamped and adjusted and easy to produce clamping error. The eccentricity can be up to 1.5 mm, which has an interaction effect with the probe mounting offset. We mainly study the probe offset of the measuring machine and the influence of the workpiece clamping error on the measurement. A method of controlling the offset of the measuring probe is proposed. The effect of the clamping error is eliminated through the space coordinate transformation of the workpiece axis, and the axis is fitted by the least square method. Finally, a common fixture can be realized to meet the clamping requirements of the workpiece.展开更多

Among the various optimization methods proposed for fuel optimal orbital rendezvous, Lawden's primer vector theory is favored by many researchers with its clear physical concept and simplicity in solu- tion. Prussing has applied the primer vector optimization theory to minimum-fuel, multiple-impulse, time-fixed orbital ren- dezvous in a near circular orbit and achieved great success. Extending Prussing's work, this paper will employ the primer vec- tor theory to study trajectory optimization problems of arbitrary eccentricity elliptical orbit rendezvous. Based on linearized equations of relative motion on elliptical reference orbit (referred to as T-H equations), the primer vector theory is used to deal with time-fixed multiple-impulse optimal rendezvous between two coplanar, coaxial elliptical orbits with arbitrary large ec- centricity. A parameter adjustment method is developed for the prime vector to satisfy the Lawden's necessary condition for the optimal solution. Finally, the optimal multiple-impulse rendezvous solution including the time, direction and magnitudes of the impulse is obtained by solving the two-point boundary value problem. The rendezvous error of the linearized equation is also analyzed. The simulation results confirmed the analyzed results that the rendezvous error is small for the small eccentric- ity case and is large for the higher eccentricity. For better rendezvous accuracy of high eccentricity orbits, a combined method of multiplier penalty function with the simplex search method is used for local optimization. The simplex search method is sensitive to the initial values of optimization variables, but the simulation results show that initial values with the primer vector theory, and the local optimization algorithm can improve the rendezvous accuracy effectively with fast convergence, because the optimal results obtained by the primer vector theory are already very close to the actual optimal solution.展开更多

At the same time, combined effect of the radius ratio and eccentricity on fluid flow is also observed with isothermal upper and lower surface. Here laminar, steady natural convection heat transfer are predicted for radius ratio R*=1.75, 2.0, 2.25, 2.5. Simulation was carried out for a range of eccentricity, ε=0.0 to 0.6. Governing equations are solved using finite volume method with a body fitted grid with collocated variable arrangement for a range of Grashof number 101-107 based on R0.Results are presented in the form of constant stream function, isothermal lines, local Nusselt number and average Nusselt number at different angular position. Eccentricity has little dominance on heat transfer rate. But significant effect of eccentricity is observed on flow field. Radius ratio has significant effect on natural convection heat transfer as wen as on flow field. At higher eccentricity, bi-cellular now is observed with one crescent-shape vortex at narrower cross section. This crescent shaped vortex is broken down into two cells with the increase of radius ratio that means transition Grashof number for bi-cellular now to tri-cellular flow is decreased with the increase of radius ratio.
