The features of an edge element method including the volume and surface edge element method are investigated in depth. Surface basis functions of edge elements to an arbitrary shape of target are derived according to the geometrical property of basis functions and applied to discretize the surface integral equation for 3-D general targets. The proposed model is presented to compute resonant frequencies and surface current of underground unexplored ordnance (UXO), and then the electromagnetic responses of single target with different frequencies and positions of sensor are simulated and results are validated by experiments.展开更多

The term USV refers to any vehicle that ope...The navy and other Department of Defense organizations are increasingly interested in the use of unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) for a variety of missions and applications. The term USV refers to any vehicle that operates on the surface of the water without a crew. USVs have the potential, and in some cases the demonstrated ability, to reduce risk to manned forces, provide the necessary force multiplication to accomplish military missions, perform tasks which manned vehicles cannot, and do so in a way that is affordable for the navy. A survey of USV activities worldwide as well as the general technical challenges of USVs was presented below. A general description of USVs was provided along with their typical applications. The technical challenges of developing a USV include its intelligence level, control, high stability, and developmental cost reduction. Through the joint efforts of researchers around the world, it is believed that the development of USVs will enter a new phase in the near future, as USVs could soon be applied widely both in military and civilian service.展开更多

Another problem is protection of "Marines" with anchored boat against waves. Sloping banks provoke unfavorable transformation of waves. Simultaneously sloping bank is the factor which significantly complicates prediction of wave pattern in numerical analysis. The purpose of present paper is to demonstrate the results of numerical investigation of ship waves pattern in constrain water area with slope banks by panel method for non-linear ship waves calculation usually applied for ship hull perfection as routine instrument of towing tanks technology. The method initially developed for calculation of ship hull waves in inviscid infinite fluid was adapted to meet boundary conditions on slope banks. Verification of the method was done for 60-series ship in rectangular channel. Development of wave pattern generated by two ship of different types--monohull ferries and river catamaran was investigated. It was found that ship waves height significantly increased due to slopping banks comparing with case of deep water and shallow water rectangular channel.展开更多

This paper holds that Japan's land policy was an evolving one and it transformed along the change of its supporters and implementers during different stages. It is mostly a contention about the different strategies on Manchuria and Mongol; the northward or the southward advance faction; the orientations of the radical military occupation or the moderate economic occupation. Interestingly, the development of Japan's postwar policy toward China, especially in the recent years, resembles the evolvement of Japan's land policy in the 19th century. The planning process in...The onset of construction and personnel transfers to the islands of Guam and Tinian present a case study in which peacetime military operations threaten conservation of environmental resources. The planning process indicates land conversion, increased population, and invasive species arriving in the midst of increased imports are among the major impending threats, especially to terrestrial biological resources. We discuss historical events that have marginalized the contributions of local stakeholders, mistake-ridden planning processes revealing inadequate efforts to safeguard the environment, and compelling evidence that predicts a trajectory targeting imminent damage of terrestrial resources. We contend these developments present a case study within the ecological ethics discipline whereby peacetime military operations push conservation of the environment to the sidelines in the name of national defense. We conclude that conservation of environmental resources is not ancillary to national security, it is integral. Wartime military damage to natural resources is unavoidable, therefore, peacetime military operations should embrace conservation priorities to a greater degree.展开更多

Outside discussions on the land issue, one of the agreements ma...The Lancaster House negotiations from September 1979 to the close of the year sought to bring to an end the chapter of the Second Chimurenga of Zimbabwe. Outside discussions on the land issue, one of the agreements made at the Lancaster was that 12 Assembly Points be set up throughout the country to house guerrillas and initiate a demobilising exercise. Each was to be manned by a small contingent of the British Army and all the Zimbabwean National Liberation Army (ZANLA) and Zimbabwe People's Revolution Army (ZIPRA) guerrillas, in any one area, were to go to the closest assembly point. The Assembly Points, which included Dzapasi/Foxtrot in Buhera, Chitungwiza, Connemara, and Mike in Lupane, at one time housed 17,000 guerrillas. Tension was very high inside and outside these Assembly Points. In 1980, there were sporadic outbursts of violence around these points all over the country. The fights recurred in 1983 killing over 300 people. This research proposes to pore over the nature of the violence in this historical epoch to try and understand its roots as well as to establish whether attempts at accountability, reconciliation, healing, and integration were made after the Assembly Points era and if not, whither Zimbabwe?展开更多

It connotes...This paper attempts to relate serendipity, the natural ability to make interesting or valuable discoveries by accident (Longman Discovery of Contemporary English) with notable discoveries and inventions. It connotes the profound ability of finding out valuable things different from those who have been exploring by spending a lot of time or for years. The author will illustrate as many cases as possible within a given time constraint, so that surrounding environments and situations may be clarified, and such discoveries and inventions may be plausibly accomplished by accident or with rich reasons. These illustrations include historical as well as more recent cases. One of the cases is beyond the scope of our environment on the earth with preconceived notion, while other cases have given great impacts to our politics and also military intelligence. It should be noted that business and technological intelligence are deeply connected with discoveries, inventions and serendipity. In concluding remarks, the essence of serendipity will be summarized and how to side with the serendipity at the most important moment will be examined by viewing time series endeavors of the inventors and those who have devoted much time to discoveries.展开更多

Moscow has effectively sacrificed the goals of modernization and development for the sake of geopolitical ambitions. The question about the price of Russia's revisionist enterprise is relevant for many states that are not satisfied with the unfair and often discriminating rules of the world order, first of all China. Russia hopes to inspire other states dissatisfied with the "unipolar" world order to challenge the West more boldly, but the result of its assault on the prin- ciples of nonintervention and territorial integrity might work in the opposite way. The states of East Asia could take a good measure of the risk inherent to embarking on the course of projecting power at the expense of modernization and become even more committed than before to upholding their unique prosperity-producing peace. This result can be interpreted as independent experimental evidence for new physics beyond the SM, even if the 125 GeV Higgs-like boson at the LHC is ultimately confirmed as the SM Higgs. A recalculated global electroweak fit with a model-independent Z' shows that Z' can simultaneously suppress AFB(0,b) and Ae at the Z-pole, and reduce the largest deviation from 2.6σ in SM to 1.0σ in our scenario. China has a vast territo...In the 21st century, natural disasters and emergencies occur frequently worldwide, which leads to the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives as well as the direct and indirect economic losses. China has a vast territory frequently struck by natural disasters. However, the reality is not optimistic. Poor organization and management during the rescue actions, the lack of large-scale, systematic medical rescue equipment were all great barriers to the outcomes. Mobile hospitals are expected to provide better health care. We were inspired by the concept of mobile hospital. Chongqing Emergency Medical Center, has set up trauma care system since 1988, in which pre- hospital care, intensive care, and in-hospital treatment is fully integrated. As a major advantage, such a system provided assurance of"golden hour" rescue treatment. Providing mobile intensive care and pre- hospital surgical service for severe trauma patients could reduce mortality significantly.
