In this study,short-term gully retreat was monitored from the active gullies selected in representative black soil area,using differential global positioning system(GPS).With the support of geographic information syst...In this study,short-term gully retreat was monitored from the active gullies selected in representative black soil area,using differential global positioning system(GPS).With the support of geographic information system(GIS),multi-temporal digital elevation models(DEM) were constructed from the data collected by GPS and used for further analysis.Based on the analysis of multi-temporal DEM,we discussed the erosion-deposition characteristics within gully and a developing model for black soil gully area of Northeast China was proposed.The results are:(1) The analysis of the monitored gully data in 2004 indicated that the retreat of gully head reached more than 10 m,gully area extended 170-400 m2,net gully eroded volume 220-320 m3,and gully erosion modulus 2200-4800 t?km?2?a?1.(2) Compared with the mature gully the initial gully grows rapidly,and its erosion parameters are relatively large.The erosion parameters have not only to do with flow energy,but also with the growth phase.(3) There are significant seasonal differences in gully erosion parameters.The extension of gully area and width dominates in winter and spring without marked net erosion while changes mainly occur in gully head and net erosion in rainy season.(4) It is remarkable for freeze-thaw erosion in the black soil area of NE China.The gully wall of SG2 extended 0.45 m under freeze-thaw effect in 2004,and the distance of gully head retreated maximally 6.4 m.(5) Due to freeze-thaw action and snowmelt,gully is primarily in the interior adjustment process in winter and early spring.There are much more depositions compared with that during rainy season,which can almost happen throughout the gully,while erosion mostly occurs near head,esp.for gullies having a relatively long history of development.On the other hand,the process of energy exchange with exterior dominates in rainy season.It is considered that this cyclic process is an important mechanism for gully growth in high latitude or/and high attitude regions.展开更多

In doing thi...In this paper, it is attempted to examine and compare different orientation, one recreational and another more precise, in the performance of two (global positioning system) receivers of forested areas. In doing this, a field test on horizontal and vertical positional errors of GPS positioning at different points in the forested area of Taxiarchis-Vrastama University forest was conducted. The two GPS receivers were used to determine the positional accuracy of a selected number of points under tree canopies. Specifically, the precision and accuracy of Garmin's GPS positioning at different points were calculated and compared with the corresponding positioning and accuracy of another GPS system, namely the TOPCON GPS. By the calculation of various measures of accuracy and precision suitable for GPS receivers and the use of statistical methods, accuracy between the different receivers differed significantly is shown. Also, regression analysis revealed that the basal area and the number of available satellites are the most important factors for predicting position error.展开更多
The observed characteristics of lower atmospheric ducts over the South China Sea(SCS) were analyzed based on Global Position Systerm(GPS) radiosonde data collected four times daily during autumn open cruises from 2006...The observed characteristics of lower atmospheric ducts over the South China Sea(SCS) were analyzed based on Global Position Systerm(GPS) radiosonde data collected four times daily during autumn open cruises from 2006 to 2012.Duct occurrence,thickness,and strength over the SCS were about 40%,150-m thick,and 8 M units,respectively,which were larger than during the summer monsoon period.Most ducts occurred at heights <1 500 m and these ducts easily trap electromagnetic wave clusters with wavelengths <2 m.Diurnal variation of the SCS ducts appeared evident.They occurred more often at midnight at higher altitudes(about 1 100 m),with a thickest layer of about 145 m and less frequently during the evening at lower altitudes(about 800 m),with a thinnest layer of about 125 m.Moreover,ducts during the daytime at a mean height of about 900 m,with the greatest strength of about 10 M units.Furthermore,all duct variables observed over the SCS in autumn decreased from north to south.These findings are useful not only in the design of radar and communication systems,but also for evaluating possible effects of anomalous propagation on meteorological radar and military applications.展开更多
In order to investigate the transformation among the precipitation,groundwater,and surface water in the Sanjiang Plain,Northeast China,precipitation and groundwater samples which were collected at the meteorological s...In order to investigate the transformation among the precipitation,groundwater,and surface water in the Sanjiang Plain,Northeast China,precipitation and groundwater samples which were collected at the meteorological station of the Sanjiang Mire Wetland Experimental Station,Chinese Academy of Sciences and the surface water which collected from the Wolulan River were used to identify the transformation of three types of water.The isotope composition of different kinds of water sources were analyzed via stable isotope(deuterium and oxygen-18) investigation of natural water.The results show a clear seasonal difference in the stable isotopes in precipitation.During the cold half-year,the mean stable isotope in precipitation in the Sanjiang Plain reaches its minimum with the minimum temperature.The δ18O and δD values are high in the rainy season.In the Wolulan River,the evaporation is the highest in August and September.The volume of evaporation and the replenishment to the river is mostly same.The groundwater is recharged more by the direct infiltration of precipitation than by the river flow.The results of this study indicate that the water bodies in the Sanjiang Plain have close hydrologic relationships,and that the transformation among each water system frequently occurs.展开更多
The mining area deformation monitoring theory and method using precise point positioning (PPP) ambi- guity resolution (AR) were studied, and an ambiguity fixing model with satellite and receiver combina- tion phas...The mining area deformation monitoring theory and method using precise point positioning (PPP) ambi- guity resolution (AR) were studied, and an ambiguity fixing model with satellite and receiver combina- tion phase delay (CPD) was proposed for zero-differenced PPP ambiguity fixing and its corresponding formula derivation was given. The data processing results for I h at six IGS stations in China show that 93% of ambiguities can be fixed within 10 min and all ambiguities can be fixed within 15 min. After ambi- guity fixing, the positioning accuracy is improved by more than 85% in the E and N directions, with abso- lute positioning accuracy reaching millimeter level, and it was improved by 70% in the U direction, reaching centimeter level; the proposed zero-differenced ambiguity fixing model can effectively improve the convergence rate and positioning accuracy in PPP. Data monitoring continuously conducted for half a year at four COPS stations of Shanxi China Coal Pingshuo Group validated the feasibility of using PPP in mining area deformation monitoring.展开更多

RS (Remote Sensing), GIS (Geographical Information System), GPS (Global Positioning Sys...A comprehensive method of image classification was developed for monitoring land use dynamics in Chanthaburi Province of Tailand. RS (Remote Sensing), GIS (Geographical Information System), GPS (Global Positioning System) and ancillary data were combined by the method which adopts the main idea of classifying images by steps from decision tree method and the hybridized supervised and unsupervised classification. An integration of automatic image interpretation, ancillary materials and expert knowledge was realized. Two subscenes of Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper (TM) images of bands 3, 4 and 5 obtained on December 15, 1992, and January 17, 1999, were used for image processing and spatial data analysis in the study. The overall accuracy of the results of classification reached 90%, which was verified by field check.Results showed that shrimp farm land, urban and traffic land, barren land, bush and agricultural developing area increased in area, mangrove, paddy field, swamp and marsh land, orchard and plantation, and tropical grass land decreased, and the forest land kept almost stable. Ecological analysis on the land use changes showed that more attentions should be paid on the effect of land development on ecological environment in the future land planning and management.展开更多

Earthquakes taking place from 1975 to 2010 in and around Shandong Province are relocated using double-difference(HypoDD)and Hypoinvers 2000(Hypo2000)methods,after correction of the onset times of seismic phases.The re...Earthquakes taking place from 1975 to 2010 in and around Shandong Province are relocated using double-difference(HypoDD)and Hypoinvers 2000(Hypo2000)methods,after correction of the onset times of seismic phases.The results show that the relocated seismicity is clearly associated with regional tectonics in space,and is also in agreement with the existence of deep faults imaged by wide-angle and deep seismic reflection profiling;most of the focal depths are in the range of 5~25km,and there are clearly two predominant depths:10km and 16km,which are inferred to be on the bottom of the upper crust and in the middle crust,respectively.The pattern of seismic activity indicates that moderate and strong earthquakes are likely to occur in the brittle-ductile transition zone between the upper and the lower crust,as the outcome of the deep tectonic dynamic process and the movement and deformation of faults in the upper and shallow crust under the regional stress field.展开更多

Stable strain measurement results open the door for improved estimates of earthquake occurrence. The Kostrov’s formula (1974) translates the smoothed strain rates in North China into geodetic moment rates. In North China, the ratio of seismic moment released to moment accumulated from GPS measurement is 60.6% in NS direction, 68.9% in EW direction, and 104.1% in NE shear direction. The near unit ratio points to the reliability of GPS measurements there. The combination of historical seismicity and GPS measurement offers a powerful attack on earthquake hazard.展开更多

It is proposed to perform localization b...When a vehicle travels in urban areas, onboard global positioning system (GPS) signals may be obstructed by high-rise buildings and thereby cannot provide accurate positions. It is proposed to perform localization by registering ground images to a 2D building boundary map which is generated from aerial images. Multilayer feature graphs (MFG) is employed to model building facades from the ground images. MFG was reported in the previous work to facilitate the robot scene understand- ing in urhan areas. By constructing MFG, the 2D/3D positions of features can be obtained, inclu- cling line segments, ideal lines, and all primary vertical planes. Finally, a voting-based feature weighted localization method is developed based on MFGs and the 2D building boundary map. The proposed method has been implemented and validated in physical experiments. In the proposed ex- periments, the algorithm has achieved an overall localization accuracy of 2.2m, which is better than commercial GPS working in open environments.展开更多

Because handover location technology is one kind of pattern matching based location technologies, offiine handovex location positioning is an essential problem to be studied for successfully matching mobile probes on GIS map. Offline handover location positioning method involves two stages, handover location positioning respectively via two weighted models and an optimized model based on the intermediate results obtained in the first stage. A preliminary field test is conducted on a stretch of freeway in the inner suburban region in Beijing, and performance evaluation results show that the proposed method is superior to standard least square model in location accuracy and location precision, which is an effective method of offline handover location positioning.展开更多

Under the effect of regional principal com...The Zhangjiakou-Bohai Sea fault zone located in the northern part of the North China region is a seismotectonic zone controlling the present-day strong earthquake activities. Under the effect of regional principal compressive stress with the direction of NEE-SWW, a series of NE-trending active tectonic zones have developed, which form a group of conjugated shear fracturing systems and control the occurrence of the present-day strong earthquakes. The feature of crustal deformation around this fault zone is studied in the paper. The long-term crustal deformation pattern from GPS measurements exhibits a relatively complete left-lateral strike-slip movement along the active fault zone. However, studies on crustal deformation by stages indicate that a series of NE-trending large-scale anomalous gradient zones have appeared along the Zhangjiakou-Bohai Sea fault zone before moderately strong earthquakes. They are represented respectively by the activities of the Tangshan-Hejian, the Sanhe-Laishui and the Yanhuai-Shanxi seismotectonic zones. This may indicate the occurrence of med-term precursors to moderately strong earthquakes along Zhangjiakou-Bohai Sea zone. The results in the paper show that the crustal deformation pattern before strong earthquake reveals the information of strain status in the deep seismogenic zone, while the chaotic pattern after the occurrence of strong earthquake represents the adjustment of the covering strata.展开更多

We investigated effectiveness of camouflage in P. modest...The round-tailed homed lizard Phrynosoma modestum is cryptically colored and resembles a small stone when it draws legs close to its body and elevates its back. We investigated effectiveness of camouflage in P. modestum and its dependence on stones by placing a lizard in one of two microhabitats (uniform sand or sand with surface rocks approximately the same size as lizards). An observer who knew which microhabitat contained the lizard was asked to locate the lizard visually. Latency to detec- tion was longer and probability of no detection within 60 s was higher for lizards on rock background than on bare sand. In arenas where lizards could choose to occupy rock or bare sand, much higher proportions selected rocky backgrounds throughout the day; at night all lizards slept among stones. A unique posture gives P modestum a rounded appearance similar to many natural stones. Lizards occasionally adopted the posture, but none did so in response to a nearby experimenter. Stimuli that elicit the posture are unknown. That P. modestum is better camouflaged among rocks than on bare sand and prefers to occupy rocky areas suggests that special resemblance to rocks (masquerade) enhances camouflage attributable to coloration and immobility.展开更多

We assessed whether a semi-free ranging group of Tonkean macaques Macaca tonkeana used its wooded parkland in a heterogeneous way. GIS and GPS were used to determine whether individuals adjusted their behaviors according to variation in environmental constraints over time of day and the course of a year. We demonstrated that social and resting activities occurred in high altitude areas and areas with a high density of bushes, whereas the group foraged in areas where the density of bushes and grass was low. In general, the animals used areas exposed to the sun that were not on a slope. Semi-free ranging Tonkean macaques seemed to behave like their wild counterparts in terms of activity budget, land use per activity and thermoregulation展开更多

文摘Earthquakes taking place from 1975 to 2010 in and around Shandong Province are relocated using double-difference(HypoDD)and Hypoinvers 2000(Hypo2000)methods,after correction of the onset times of seismic phases.The results show that the relocated seismicity is clearly associated with regional tectonics in space,and is also in agreement with the existence of deep faults imaged by wide-angle and deep seismic reflection profiling;most of the focal depths are in the range of 5~25km,and there are clearly two predominant depths:10km and 16km,which are inferred to be on the bottom of the upper crust and in the middle crust,respectively.The pattern of seismic activity indicates that moderate and strong earthquakes are likely to occur in the brittle-ductile transition zone between the upper and the lower crust,as the outcome of the deep tectonic dynamic process and the movement and deformation of faults in the upper and shallow crust under the regional stress field.

文摘As one of the most severe typhoons in the year 2005,Typhoon Longwang is chosen as a case study in this article.Throughout its life,two surveillance flights are carried out on it.Different from previous studies,GPS(global positioning system)Dropwinsonde data collected from the Dropwinsonde Observations for Typhoon Surveillance near the Taiwan Region is chosen to present the thermodynamic and kinetic structure at its two different stages of development.This study suggests that not only kinetic structure but also thermodynamic structure of Longwang are more robust in the second surveillance than the first surveillance,with stronger and larger circulation and a warmer core.Further research shows that the environmental vertical wind shear mainly contributes to the asymmetric structure of the typhoon.The strong vertical wind shear not only results in the distinct asymmetric structure,but also restrains the development of the typhoon.
文摘The new GPS data can map crustal strain rates over large areas with a useful degree of precision. Stable strain measurement results open the door for improved estimates of earthquake occurrence. The Kostrov’s formula (1974) translates the smoothed strain rates in North China into geodetic moment rates. In North China, the ratio of seismic moment released to moment accumulated from GPS measurement is 60.6% in NS direction, 68.9% in EW direction, and 104.1% in NE shear direction. The near unit ratio points to the reliability of GPS measurements there. The combination of historical seismicity and GPS measurement offers a powerful attack on earthquake hazard.

文摘When a vehicle travels in urban areas, onboard global positioning system (GPS) signals may be obstructed by high-rise buildings and thereby cannot provide accurate positions. It is proposed to perform localization by registering ground images to a 2D building boundary map which is generated from aerial images. Multilayer feature graphs (MFG) is employed to model building facades from the ground images. MFG was reported in the previous work to facilitate the robot scene understand- ing in urhan areas. By constructing MFG, the 2D/3D positions of features can be obtained, inclu- cling line segments, ideal lines, and all primary vertical planes. Finally, a voting-based feature weighted localization method is developed based on MFGs and the 2D building boundary map. The proposed method has been implemented and validated in physical experiments. In the proposed ex- periments, the algorithm has achieved an overall localization accuracy of 2.2m, which is better than commercial GPS working in open environments.

文摘Handover location technology was employed for collecting road traffic information in a number of field projects, and the project results demonstrate that it is a supplementary and promising means of road traffic information collection for further traffic supervision and maintenance. Because handover location technology is one kind of pattern matching based location technologies, offiine handovex location positioning is an essential problem to be studied for successfully matching mobile probes on GIS map. Offline handover location positioning method involves two stages, handover location positioning respectively via two weighted models and an optimized model based on the intermediate results obtained in the first stage. A preliminary field test is conducted on a stretch of freeway in the inner suburban region in Beijing, and performance evaluation results show that the proposed method is superior to standard least square model in location accuracy and location precision, which is an effective method of offline handover location positioning.
文摘The Zhangjiakou-Bohai Sea fault zone located in the northern part of the North China region is a seismotectonic zone controlling the present-day strong earthquake activities. Under the effect of regional principal compressive stress with the direction of NEE-SWW, a series of NE-trending active tectonic zones have developed, which form a group of conjugated shear fracturing systems and control the occurrence of the present-day strong earthquakes. The feature of crustal deformation around this fault zone is studied in the paper. The long-term crustal deformation pattern from GPS measurements exhibits a relatively complete left-lateral strike-slip movement along the active fault zone. However, studies on crustal deformation by stages indicate that a series of NE-trending large-scale anomalous gradient zones have appeared along the Zhangjiakou-Bohai Sea fault zone before moderately strong earthquakes. They are represented respectively by the activities of the Tangshan-Hejian, the Sanhe-Laishui and the Yanhuai-Shanxi seismotectonic zones. This may indicate the occurrence of med-term precursors to moderately strong earthquakes along Zhangjiakou-Bohai Sea zone. The results in the paper show that the crustal deformation pattern before strong earthquake reveals the information of strain status in the deep seismogenic zone, while the chaotic pattern after the occurrence of strong earthquake represents the adjustment of the covering strata.
文摘The round-tailed homed lizard Phrynosoma modestum is cryptically colored and resembles a small stone when it draws legs close to its body and elevates its back. We investigated effectiveness of camouflage in P. modestum and its dependence on stones by placing a lizard in one of two microhabitats (uniform sand or sand with surface rocks approximately the same size as lizards). An observer who knew which microhabitat contained the lizard was asked to locate the lizard visually. Latency to detec- tion was longer and probability of no detection within 60 s was higher for lizards on rock background than on bare sand. In arenas where lizards could choose to occupy rock or bare sand, much higher proportions selected rocky backgrounds throughout the day; at night all lizards slept among stones. A unique posture gives P modestum a rounded appearance similar to many natural stones. Lizards occasionally adopted the posture, but none did so in response to a nearby experimenter. Stimuli that elicit the posture are unknown. That P. modestum is better camouflaged among rocks than on bare sand and prefers to occupy rocky areas suggests that special resemblance to rocks (masquerade) enhances camouflage attributable to coloration and immobility.
文摘Wild animals use their habitat according to ecological pressures such as predation, resource availability or tempera- ture, yet little is known about how individuals use their environment in semi free-ranging conditions. We assessed whether a semi-free ranging group of Tonkean macaques Macaca tonkeana used its wooded parkland in a heterogeneous way. GIS and GPS were used to determine whether individuals adjusted their behaviors according to variation in environmental constraints over time of day and the course of a year. We demonstrated that social and resting activities occurred in high altitude areas and areas with a high density of bushes, whereas the group foraged in areas where the density of bushes and grass was low. In general, the animals used areas exposed to the sun that were not on a slope. Semi-free ranging Tonkean macaques seemed to behave like their wild counterparts in terms of activity budget, land use per activity and thermoregulation
