In such setting, less competitive ports may continually lose patronage of shippers (indigenous to them) to adjacent ones with better attributes. The extent of and determinants of inter-port competition in the West Africa's coast are of interest to port administrators/operators who risk losing significant portion of their domestic generated cargo traffic to competing neighbouring ports. In this paper, we explore the question of what port specific attributes serve as competitive basis for West Africa's coastal ports operating in proximity to the other. Through a survey, users of these ports were asked to identify port specific attributes which they consider when deciding which port to use for shipments making. To enrich our empirical model, data collected from the survey were augmented with secondary data (on the identified attributes) obtained from the respective ports. Statistical evidence from data analysis suggests that ports operating in proximity in the West Africa's coast compete on the basis of attributes that minimise costs for port users, viz: ships' pre-berthiig time, ship turnround time, crane efficiency and availability of cargo spaces (proxied by frequency of ship calls). Policy implications of the findings were discussed.展开更多

The verification of the existence or lack of accessibility equipment at bus stops and parking areas close to tourist attractions relies on current legislation (NBR 9050/1994) that establishes the right to accessibility for disabled people to transportation, local culture and leisure. An application that facilitates this recognition with low operating costs and high performance was developed using the OS software Quantum GIS 1.0.2, Apache 2.2.4, Mapserver 5.0.2, I3GEO 4.0, PostgreSQL 8.3 and PostGIS 1.3.5. This software is able to integrate the management of tourist areas and the advertisement of tourist information regarding accessibility devices at sights recognized as tourist attractions by Campinas city hall.展开更多

The research included a series of six measurements, each lasting l h and starting at 5:00, 12:00 and 17:00 O'clock. The measured operator was at all times the same person. We had a hypothesis that the rate of the measured variability would have to do with the following four factors: forwarder cabin type, terrain character, fatigue during the work shift and work at daylight or in dark. Main findings are described below: during his work with a fixed type of the forwarder cab, the operator's brain waves at the frequency of Gamma, high Beta, Beta and Alpha reached statistically significantly higher average values than during his work with a rotating cab. With a higher degree of terrain roughness and in the forwarder with the rotating cab, the operator showed a significantly higher frequency and lower amplitude of respiration. At the beginning of the work shift, the tension of muscles in the operator's neck was at the significantly lowest level. In the afternoon, at the end of the work shift, the level of muscle tension was the highest. The “daylight/dark” work had a significantly highest impact on volume changes in the amplitude (strength) of blood pulse and on the skin conductance level. All research factors explained together 15%-65% of the variability of physiological functions.展开更多

Two symbol libraries were created. The first one is a set of symbols for description of map orientation (compass roses and north arrows) with correct national (in this case Czech) description. The second one is a set of symbols for description of CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) threats and another CBRN issues. The TrueType font files are used as symbol libraries in various ESRI products. The font libraries created in this form are easily transferable between various operating systems and GIS programs and also can be easily converted into various different vector graphics formats. The whole process of font creation has taken place under Linux environment. Fortunately main programs used in this process are multiplatform and could be used under Linux, MS Windows and other various computer operating was part of Ubuntu repository and it was obtained free of charge. systems.
