Phytoremediation of Contaminated Chemical Plant Sites

[Objective] The aim was to research phytoremediation effects on soils with combined pollution. [Method] With simulation experiment, the test selected plants suitable for phytoremediation in soils polluted with Pb-Cd, PAHs, and Pb-Cd-PAHs,respectively and ryegrass was grown to explore phytoremediation on contaminated sites by adjusting bio-availability. [Result] After 70 d growing of ryegrass, the content of available Pb in contaminated soils was 375.26 mg/kg, the content of Cd was 4.9mg/kg after 90 d, and the content of B [a]P was 0.60 mg/kg after 100 d, which were all lower compared with soil limits. [Conclusion] Ryegrass is a suitable plant for phytoremediation. 展开更多

By measuring wetland plants chlorophyll content,malondialdehyde(MDA) content and superoxide dismutase(SOD) enzyme activity,the changes of wetland plant physiological characeristics under different power strength were studied,and the mechanism of electric field on plant physiological characteristics was analyzed to provide a theoretical basis for the pollutant removal ability strengthening of artificial wetland under electricfield.The results showed that compared with the control plants,low-intensity-voltage(1 V and 3 V) had no significant effect on the normal physiological and biochemical indexes of the plants,and the growth trend was better than the control group;with the voltage increasing,plant chlorophyll content,MDA content and SOD activity were greatly affected,indicating that plants were under strong oxidative stress,and the growth was damaged.Therefore,a suitable electric field could enhance the sewage treatment effect of constructed wetland. 展开更多

The preservation of large industrial sites in situ is rarely an option. Alternatively, an industrial site can be subjected to documentation, in order to achieve some forms of preservation by record. Preferably, industrial sites are best understood while in operation. Practical and methodological considerations in choosing adequate approaches to process recording, as well as the experience of documenting both a living industrial heritage in the form of a mining site in operation and an abandoned mining site in decay are discussed with reference to a pragmatic approach to documentation of industrial sites. 展开更多

Soil dynamic parameters,including dynamic shear modulus ratio and damping ratio,have important effects on the results of layered soil earthquake response. In this paper,the mean parameter values of silty clay in different depths are obtained after statistical analysis of the experimental soil dynamic data from 20 recent site seismic safety evaluation reports in the Beijing area. Furthermore,based on two typical engineering sites,the influence of four different soil dynamic parameters,the statistic mean values,experimental values, values recommended by Yuan Xiaoming,and the values recommended in the code for seismic safety evaluation of engineering sites( DB001-94) are analyzed. The result shows that mean statistical values are applicable to seismic safety evaluation work in the Beijing area,especially for some inter-layered silty clays whose undisturbed soil samples are hard to obtain. 展开更多

In this article, we mainly analysis the soil carbon storage of the alpine grassland under different land uses in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The samples of this investigation include six experimental fields which are fenced mowing grassland, artificial grassland, winter and spring grazing meadowland, summer and autumn mild grazing land, summer and autumn moderate grazing pasture and summer and autumn severe grazing land and seven soil layers included 0 cm-5 cm, 5 cm-10 cm, 10 cm-20 cm, 20 cm-30 cm, 30 cm-50 cm, 50 cm-70 cm and 70 cm-100 cm. The results show that the soil carbon storage in different soil layers will gradually reduce and the difference was remarkable (P 〈 0.05). What is more, the soil carbon storage of alpine grassland under different land uses has following sequence: winter and spring grazing grassland 〉 summer and autumn mild grazing land 〉 artificial grassland 〉 summer and autumn moderate grazing meadowland 〉 summer and autumn severe grazing pasture 〉 fenced mowing meadow, and the significant difference between them is remarkable (P 〈 0.05). 展开更多

Based on the extraction and calculation of the short-term seismic precursory information magnitude from the 114 major precursory observations in the North China region, and together with consideration of factors such as geological structure, seismicity, crustal thickness, and in particular, the current geodynamics of the region, the authors studied the time-space evolution characteristics of the short-term earthquake precursory information magnitude and its relationship with earthquakes and proposed the index and method for the short-term synthetic prediction of earthquakes with M S≥5.0 in the North China region. Condition evaluation of a unique mining site

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the existing conditions and the stability of a mining site in which the unique features of seismicity, mining activity, hydrological conditions, geological conditions, environmental conditions, and future development plans were considered. In particular, the potential subsidence locations near the proposed construction site, the effects of mining boundary profile,and the influence scope of the mining activity on the neighboring areas were investigated using the finite element method. The study results indicate:(1) the overlying sandstone layer to the coal layer is the key to the stability of the mining roof;(2) the broken boundary has the most effect, followed by the arc boundary and linear boundary;(3) the safe distance from the mining boundary should be at least400 m if the proposed structure is to be built near an active mining site. Other relevant engineering recommendations are also proposed. The concluded results from this study may serve as a guide to other similar sites in the world. 展开更多

The use of GPR (ground penetrating radar) as an auxiliary tool in geotechnical and environmental site investigations has increased in Brazil during the past few years. GPR has been used to delineate contamination plumes, to aid in geological modelling, to detect buried structures and in archaeological surveys. This paper describes and discusses the results ofa GPR site investigation carried out at Gramacho Municipal Solid Waste Landfill in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A field study was conducted to detect failure surfaces in its slopes and within the waste mass. The results have shown that: (l) Slip surfaces could be indicated by small continuous voids within the waste mass since there is a good contrast between the dielectric constant of air and municipal waste; (2) Greenhouse gases pools could also be indicated by large voids within the waste mass since there is a good contrast between the dielectric constant of carbon dioxide, methane and municipal waste; (3) Leachate pools present a high electric conductivity that could be easily detected by GPR. 展开更多

This paper presents a random physical model of seismic ground motion field on a specific local engineering site.With this model,artificial ground motions which are consistent with realistic records at SMART-1 array on spatial correlation are synthesized.A two-scale modeling method of seismic random field is proposed.In large scale,the seismic ground motion field on bedrock surface is simplified to a two-dimensional spherical wave field based on the seismic point source and homogeneous isotropic media model.In small scale,the seismic ground motion field on the engineering site has a plane waveform.By introducing the physical models of seismic source,path and local site and considering the randomness of the basic physical parameters,the random model of seismic ground motion field is completed in a random functional form.This model is applied to simulation of the acceleration records at SMART-1 array by using the superposition method of wave group. 展开更多

According to site investigation drilling, sampling, seismic sound logging wave test in single-hole and cross-hole, laboratory wave velocity test of intact rock, together with analysis of the site geological conditions, the seismic wave test results of the site between strata lithology and the geologic structure were studied. The relationships of seismic waves with the site lithology and the geologic structure were set up. The dynamic parameters of different grades of weathering profile were deduced. The results assist the seismic design of Phase Ⅲ Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, China. 展开更多
