Different environmental performance indicators present different methodologies and aim to measure countries' environmental performances with different approaches. One of the environmental indices, Environmental Performance Index (EPI), ranks countries' performance on high-priority environmental issues in two areas: protection of human health and protection of ecosystems. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the environmental aspect of sustainability with the EPI and analyze the relationships and differences of the chosen 14 (seven are developed and seven are emerging) countries' EPI scores and Gross Domestic Products (GDPs).展开更多

The most frequently cause of discomfort in smart buildings is overrun of intelligence. There are physical and psychological factors that influenced building users' comfort. An indoor air quality seems to be one of the main problems of smart office buildings. In Slovakia the office buildings relating to indoor environment European standard are mostly evaluated as the non-low polluting buildings. The pollution from building as well as the pollution from occupancy and using was respected. The odor intensity and indoor air acceptability were assessed by a sensory panel. The concentrations of total volatile organic compounds and carbon dioxide were measured. The odors from building materials studied under different air change rate are presented in this paper. The case study of indoor air acceptability concerning to indoor odors under occupancy and its affect on perceived air quality influenced by air change rate are also presented in this paper.展开更多

In this study, key areas of nearshore habitat in central and western Strait of Juan de Fuca were categorized by geomorphic habitat type and assessed for fish use within a degraded (Elwha) and intact comparative drift cells over a one year period. Juvenile Chinook and coho salmon were also sampled for genetic analysis to define regional dispersal patterns. Key findings are: (1) Ecological function of the area's nearshore is complex, with very strong seasonal variation in fish use both within and across GMHT (geomorphic habitat type); (2) GMHT link to nearshore function for fish use differs depending on the fish species and time of year. Surf smelt and sand lance were the most abundant. And they were seasonally used embayed, spit, and bluff shorelines more than lower rivers. Juvenile Chinook, coho, and chum salmon occurred in much lower density than forage fish species, and used lower rivers more than other GMHTs; (3) When GMHTs were combined and analyzed at the drift cell scale, the degraded drift cell had different ecological patterns than the intact drift cell; (4) Cross regional juvenile fish use of nearshore is an important component of habitat use: juvenile Chinook and coho from as far away as the Columbia River Oregon and Klamath River California utilize central Strait of Juan de Fuca shorelines. Forage fish species may do so as well. Drift cell and cross regional scales are therefore most important for accurately defining nearshore ecological function, management, and restoration actions.展开更多

Sustainable development is embedded in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of a nation and GDP is used as an indicator of the economic health of a country and also as a way of measuring a country's standard of living. Accelerating sustainable development requires the involvement of businesses to play a role in creating economic growth and job creation. The understanding is that when businesses invest in capital that is used in the production of goods, they create employment which in turn helps boost the people's standard of living as they earn some income. However, accelerating sustainable development has a beating on employee empowerrnent where workers are paid living wages to meet their fundamental needs, job security, and right to join a trade union and working in an environment free of sexual harassment.展开更多

Paneth cells, as one of the major producers of antimicrobial peptides in the intestine under steady-state conditions, play a vital role in regulating intestinal flora. Many studies on inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)-associated genes have put Paneth cells at the center of IBD pathogenesis. In this perspective, we focus on mechanistic studies of different cellular processes in Paneth cells that are regulated by various IBD-associated susceptibility genes, and we discuss the hypothesis that Paneth cells function as the central hub for sensing and regulating intestinal flora in the maintenance of intestinal homeostasis.展开更多

From the perspective of surface type, there are two typical anti-adhesion mechanisms: micro- and nano- surface structures and liquid-covered surface. Many living organisms possess one or two of these anti-adhesion surfac- es in order to achieve superior anti-adhesion, for example, soil animals like mole cricket and earthworm [1]. Carnivo- rous pitcher plant Nepenthes can capture and digest insects to meet the fundamental nutrients needs. When the insects crawl on its slippery peristome, they could easy-sliding into the picher, known as "aquaplaning". Wong et al. [2] at Harvard University has designed and fabricated slippery surface mimicking this slippery mechanism in Nepenthes, the results of which was published in Nature. However, questions remain about the mechanism underlying its func- tion, especially for the liquid film formation mechanism.展开更多

We set out to uncover endocrine correlates of mate choice, social environment, and reproductive investment in female red-backed fairy-wrens Malurus melanocephalus. In this socially monogamous, yet highly sexually promiscuous species, females experience discrete variation in the phenotype of their mates, which vary in both plumage signals and level of paternal care, and in the composition of their breeding groups, which consist of either the pair alone or with an additional cooperative auxiliary; fe- male investment varies according to these social parameters. We found that androgen, estrogen, and glucorticoid levels varied with reproductive stage, with highest androgen and estrogen concentrations during nest construction and highest corticosterone concentrations during the pre-breeding stage. These stage-dependent patterns did not vary with male phenotype or auxiliary presence, though androgen levels during pre-breeding mate selection were lower in females obtaining red/black mates than those obtaining brown mates. We found no evidence that androgen, estrogen, or corticosterone levels during the fertile period were re- lated to extra-pair young (EPY) frequency. This study demonstrates clear changes in steroid levels with reproductive stage, though it found little support for variation with social environment. We suggest hormonal responsiveness to social factors may be physiologically constrained in ways that are bypassed through exogenous hormone manipulations.展开更多
