Currently, several guidelines including an Australian version for retrofitting reinforced concrete (RC) structures are available for the design of retrofitting systems against seismic and monotonic loads using steel or fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) plates that can be either adhesively bonded to the surface or near surface mounted to the concrete cover. However, none of these guidelines provide advice suitable for retrofitting structures subjected to blast loads. In this paper, numerical models are used to simulate the performance of retrofitted RC slabs subjected to blast loads. Airblast pressure distributions on the surface of the slabs estimated in a previous study are used as input in the analysis. A material damage model developed previously for concrete and an elastoplastic model for steel bars are employed in this research for modelling reinforced concrete behaviour due to explosive loads. The material models and blast loading are coded into a finite element computer program LS-DYNA3D to do the analysis. With the numerical model, parametric studies are conducted to investigate RC slabs retrofitted by either externally bonded or near-surface mounted plates or GFRP sheets subjected to blast loads. Discussion is made on the effectiveness of the retrofitting system for RC slabs against blast loads.展开更多

This paper evaluates the incorporation of sisal fibers of 20 mm and 40 mm in length and volume fraction of 0.5% and 1% for concrete masonry structural blocks, and determines the use of these units to build prisms and mini-walls. Laboratory tests were carried out to characterize the physical of blocks and mortar, in addition to the axial compression tests of the units, prisms, and mini-walls. The sisal had low apparent density and high water absorption, which is a common feature of such material due to the high incidence of permeable pores. The physical properties of the blocks with and without addition complied with the standard requirements established to validate their use. The obtained results showed that the fiber-reinforced mini-walls obtained values very close to or even higher than those obtained for the mini-walls without fibers, demonstrating better performance than the blocks and prisms.展开更多

The SPR effect triggers many new surface processes, including radiation and radiationless relaxations. As for the radiation process, the SPR effect causes the significant focus of light and enormous enhancement of the local surface optical electric field, as observed in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy(SERS) with very high detection sensitivity(to the single-molecule level). SERS is used to identify surface species and characterize molecular structures and chemical reactions. For the radiationless process, the SPR effect can generate hot carriers, such as hot electrons and hot holes, which can induce and enhance surface chemical reactions. Here, we review our recent work and related literature on surface catalytic-coupling reactions of aromatic amines and aromatic nitro compounds on nanostructured noble metal surfaces. Such reactions are a type of novel surface plasmon-enhanced chemical reaction. They could be simultaneously characterized by SERS when the SERS signals are assigned. By combining the density functional theory(DFT) calculations and SERS experimental spectra, our results indicate the possible pathways of the surface plasmonenhanced photochemical reactions on nanostructures of noble metals. To construct a stable and sustainable system in the conversion process of the light energy to the chemical energy on nanoscale metal surfaces, it is necessary to simultaneously consider the hot electrons and the hot holes as a whole chemical reaction system.展开更多
