The structure and characteristics of the graphite were determined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, BET surface area, particle size analysis and electrochemical measurements. The results show that the modified graphite has a better-developed crystallite structure, larger average particle diameter, smaller surface area, and better electrochemical characteristics than the untrented graphite. The sample mild-oxidized at 600℃ for 3h has the best electrochemical performances with a reversible capacity of 304.5mA·h/g, a irreversible capacity of 66.4mA·h/g, and a initial coulombic efficiency of 82.1%. The charge/discharge properties and a cycling stability of the prototype lithium ion batteries with modified graphite as anodes are improved. Its capacity retention ratio at the 200th cycle is enhanced from 66.75% to 90.15%.展开更多

Carbon foam is utilized as an anode and further modified by urea to improve its performance in marine benthic microbial fuel cell(BMFC) with higher voltage and output power. The electrochemical properties of plain carbon foam(PC) and urea-modified carbon foam(UC) are measured respectively. Results show that the UC obtains better wettability after its modification and higher anti-polarization ability than the PC. A novel phenomenon has been found that the electrical potential of the modified UC anode is nearly 100 m V lower than that of the PC, reaching-570 ±10 m V(vs. SCE), and that it also has a much higher electron transfer kinetic activity, reaching 9399.4 m W m-2, which is 566.2-fold higher than that from plain graphite anode(PG). The fuel cell containing the UC anode has the maximum power density(256.0 m W m-2) among the three different BMFCs. Urea would enhance the bacteria biofilm formation with a more diverse microbial community and maintain more electrons, leading to a lower anodic redox potential and higher power output. The paper primarily analyzes why the electrical potential of the modified anode becomes much lower than that of others after urea modification. These results can be utilized to construct a novel BMFC with higher output power and to design the conditioner of voltage booster with a higher conversion ratio. Finally, the carbon foam with a bigger pore size would be a potential anodic material in conventional MFC.展开更多

The present work developed an ellipsoid-based simulated annealing method and numeri- cally reconstructed the three-dimensional microstructure of a graphite anode. The reconstructed anode is a composite of three clearly distinguished phases: pore (or electrolyte), graphite, and solid additives, well representing the non- isotropic heterogeneous characteristic of real graphite anode. Characterization analysis of the reconstructed electrode gives information such as the connectivity of individual phase, the specific interracial area between solid and pore phase, and the pore size distribution. The effects of the ellipsoid size on the structural characteristics of graphite anode were particularly studied. As the size of the ellipsoidal particle slightly increases, the average pore diameter increases and as a result the specific interfacial area between the solid and pore phase in the reconstructed area decreases; compared with the equatorial radius, the polar radius of ellipsoidal graphite particles has more sig- nificant influence on the characteristics of electrode microstructure.展开更多

Both ex situ and in situ mi- croscope FTIR spectroscopy (MFFIRS) in a reflection configuration were employed to investigate interfacial processes of the graphite thin film anodes in lithium-ion batteries. A solid electrolyte interphase layer (SEI layer) was formed on the cycled graphite thin film anode. Ex situ MFTIRS revealed that the main components of the SEI layer on cycled graphite film anodes in 1 tool L 1 LiPF6/ethylene carbonate + dimethyl carbonate (1:1) are alkyl lithium carbonates (ROCOzLi). The desolvation process on graphite anodes during the initial intercalation of lithium ion with graphite was also observed and analyzed by in situ MFTIRS.展开更多

This paper presents a solar thermal molecule model of a photo-isomerizable azobenzene(Azo) molecule covalently bound to graphene. The storage capacity of the Azo depending on isomerization enthalpy(ΔH) is calculated based on density functional theory. The result indicates that the ΔH of Azo molecules on the graphene can be tuned by electronic interaction, steric hindrance and molecular hydrogen bonds(H-bonds). Azo with the withdrawing group on the ortho-position of the free benzene shows a relatively high ΔH due to resonance effect. Moreover, the H-bonds on the trans-isomer largely increase ΔH because they stabilize the trans-isomer at a low energy. 2-hydroxy-4-carboxyl-2′,6′,-dimethylamino-Azo/graphene shows the maximum ΔH up to 1.871 e V(107.14 Wh kg^(-1)), which is 125.4% higher than Azo without functional groups. The Azo/graphene model can be used for developing high-density solar thermal storage materials by controlling molecular interaction.展开更多

Near-stoichiometric flower-like Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) microspheres with a high specific surface area was fabri- cated for use as the photocathode in a DSSC. To improve the extraction and transfer of electrons, graphene was added to the CZTS. A DSSC with a 10-gin TiO2 pho- toanode layer exhibited a slightly degraded efficiency with a CZTS-graphene photocathode, relative to a Pt counter electrode (CE). Nevertheless, when the thickness of the TiO2 photoanode was reduced to 2 lam, the efficiency of a DSSC with a CZTS-graphene photocathode was greater than that of a Pt-DSSC. It is speculated that, unlike the Pt CE, a CZTS-graphene photocathode not only collects electrons from an external circuit and catalyzes the reduction of the triiodide ions in the electrolyte, but also utilizes unabsorbed photons to produce photo-excited electrons and suppresses charge recombination, thus enhancing the performance of the cell. The use of narrowband gap p-type semiconductors as photocathodes offers a new means of fabricating thin dye-sensitized solar cells and effectively improving the cell performance.展开更多

As a result of its structural integrity, high packing density and an intimate electrical contact consolidated by the conductive networks, the composite anode yielded excellent electrochemical performance in terms of charge storage capability, cycling life and coulombic efficiency. A half cell achieved reversible capacities of 1,600 mAh·g-1 and 1,000 mAh·g-1 at 0.5 A·g-1 and 2.1 A·g-1, respectively, while retaining more than 70% of the initial capacities over 1,000 cycles. Complete lithium-ion pouch cells coupling the anode with a lithium metal oxide cathode demonstrated excellent cycling performance and energy output, representing significant advance in developing Si-based electrode for practical application in high-performance lithium-ion batteries.展开更多

Differences in spring and autumn migration routes have been reported in species that cross such barriers, and are thought to have evolved in response to seasonal variation in prevailing wind direction. We tested the hypothesis that migration routes vary seasonally with respect to the Gulf of Mexico in the tree swallow Tachycineta bicolor using solar geolocators attached and retrieved at 4 breeding sites in central North America. We found that 100 % of birds (n = 10) made a trans-Gulf flight of 〉850 km from Louisiana south to their wintering grounds in the Yucatan Peninsula in 12-36 hours, achieving minimum ground speeds as high as 32 m/s. Although most days during autumn migration were characterized by unfavorable headwinds blowing to the northwest, migration over the Gulf mostly occurred on days with strong winds blowing to the south. In contrast, in 8 of 9 (88 %) birds on spring migration returned from the wintering grounds towards Louisiana following a clockwise loop pat- tern flying over land to the west around the Gulf. During this spring period there were few days with prevailing winds from the south to assist northward migration. Results suggest that, despite being up to three times further (ca. 2,700 kin), a coastal circum-Gulf spring migration represents the less risky route when wind conditions are not favorable. These findings also help to resolve a long-standing dispute in the literature concerning migration patterns between the US Gulf coast and Mexico, and provide insight into the factors shaping migration strategies of small songbirds migrating across large bodies of water [Current Zoology 60(5): 653-559, 2014].展开更多
