Beta Ti−35Nb sandwich-structured composites with various reinforcing layers were designed and produced using additive manufacturing(AM)to achieve a balance between light weight and high strength.The impact of reinforcing layers on the compressive deformation behavior of porous composites was investigated through micro-computed tomography(Micro-CT)and finite element method(FEM)analyses.The results indicate that the addition of reinforcement layers to sandwich structures can significantly enhance the compressive yield strength and energy absorption capacity of porous metal structures;Micro-CT in-situ observation shows that the strain of the porous structure without the reinforcing layer is concentrated in the middle region,while the strain of the porous structure with the reinforcing layer is uniformly distributed;FEM analysis reveals that the reinforcing layers can alter stress distribution and reduce stress concentration,thereby promoting uniform deformation of the porous structure.The addition of reinforcing layer increases the compressive yield strength of sandwich-structured composite materials by 124%under the condition of limited reduction of porosity,and the yield strength increases from 4.6 to 10.3 MPa. 展开更多

The vacuum medium-frequency induction melting technology was employed to prepare the Cu-15%Cr-0.24%Zr alloy. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) were used to analyze the phase composition, morphology and structure of the alloy. The results reveal that the as-cast structure of the alloy consists of Cu matrix, Cr dendrite, eutectic Cr and Zr-rich phase. A large number of Cr-precipitated phases occur in the Cu matrix, and Cu5Zr particles can be found in the grain boundary of Cu matrix. The HRTEM images prove that there is a semi-coherent relationship between Cu5Zr and Cu matrix. 展开更多

Zn-Al-Cu-TiB2(ZA27-TiB2) in situ composites were fabricated via reactions between molten aluminum and mixed halide salts(K2TiF6 and KBF4) at temperature of 875 °C. The microstructure, mechanical properties and wear behavior of the composites were investigated. Microstructure analysis shows that fine and clean TiB2 particles distribute uniformly through the matrix. The mechanical properties of the composites increase with the increase in TiB2 content. As TiB2 content increases to 5%(mass fraction), an improvement of HB 18 in hardness and 49 MPa in ultimate tensile strength(UTS) is achieved. The overall results reveal that the composites possess low friction coefficients and the wear rate is reduced from 5.9×10-3 to 1.3×10-3 mm3/m after incorporating 5% TiB2. Friction coefficient and worn surface analysis indicate that there is a change in the wear mechanism in the initial stage of wear test after introducing in situ TiB2 particles into the matrix. 展开更多

Microstructures of Ti2AlN/TiAl composites prepared by in-situ method were characterized in in-situ and aging treatment conditions and the nitride precipitation was investigated in Ti2AlN/TiAl composites aged at 900 ℃ for 24 h after being heat treated at 1400 ℃ for 0.5 h. The in-situ composites consist of γ+α2 lamellar colonies, equiaxed y grains and Ti2AlN reinforcements. Matrix with nearly fully lamellar structure formed after solution and subsequently aging treatment. With the increase of Ti2AlN content, the nearly fully lamellar structure becomes instable for the aged composites. According to TEM study, fine Ti2AlN precipitates are found to distribute at the grain boundaries of lamellar colony. Needle-like Ti3AlN precipitates arrange in line with growing axis parallel to [001] direction of the γ-TiAl matrix and another needle-like Ti3AlN precipitates with lager size distribute at the dislocations. The effect of maleic anhydride grafted styrene-ethylene- buty-lene-styrene block copolymer (SEBS-g-MAH) and in-situ grafting MAH on mechanical, dynamic mechanical properties of wood flour/recycled plastic blends composites was investigated. Recycled plastic polypro-pylene (PP), high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polystyrene (PS), were mixed with wood flour in a high speed blender and then extruded by a twin/single screw tandem extruder system to form wood flour/recycled plastic blends composites. Results show that the impact properties of the composites were improved more significantly by using SEBS-g-MAH compatibilizer than by using the mixtures of MAH and DCP via reactive blending in situ. However, contrary results were ob-served on the tensile and flexural properties of the corresponding com-posites. In General, the mechanical properties of composites made from recycled plastic blends were inferior to those made from virgin plastic blends, especially in elongation break. The morphological study verified that the interfacial adhesion or the compatibility of plastic blends with wood flour was improved by adding SEBS-g-MAH or in-situ grafting MAH. A better interfacial bonding between PP, HDPE, PS and wood flour was obtained by in-situ grafting MAH than the addition of SEBS-g-MAH. In-situ grafting MAH can be considered as a potential way of increasing the interfacial compatibility between plastic blends and wood flour. The storage modulus and damping factor of composites were also characterized through dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). 展开更多

TiB2/Al-30Si composites were fabricated via in-situ melt reaction under high-energy ultrasonic field. The microstructure and wear properties of the composite were investigated by XRD, SEM and dry sliding testing. The results indicate that TiB2 reinforcement particles are uniformly distributed in the aluminum matrix under high-energy ultrasonic field. The morphology of the TiB2 particles is in circle-shape or quadrangle-shape, and the size of the particles is 0.1-1.5μm. The primary silicon particles are in quadrangle-shape and the average size of them is about 10μm. Hardness values of the Al-30Si matrix alloy and the TiB2/Al-30Si composites considerably increase as the high energy ultrasonic power increases. In particular, the maximum hardness value of the in-situ composites is about 1.3 times as high as that of the matrix alloy when the ultrasonic power is 1.2 kW, reaching 412 MPa. Meanwhile, the wear resistance of the in-situ TiB2/Al-30Si composites prepared under high-energy ultrasonic field is obviously improved and is insensitive to the applied loads of the dry sliding testing. 展开更多

TiC particle reinforced 420 stainless steel matrix composites were fabricated, and the microstructure, tensile properties and wear resistance of the composites were studied. The experimental results indicate that the distribution of TiC particles with size of 5 to 10 μm in diameter is uniform if the volume fraction of TiC is lower than 6%. However, slight agglomeration can be observed when the TiC content exceeds 6%. With the increase of TiC content the tensile and yield strength of the composites prepared increases and reaches the maximum when the volume fraction of TiC increases to 5%. Further increase of TiC content causes reductions of yield and tensile strength. The ductility of the composites shows a monotone decrease with the increase of TiC addition. The introduction of TiC into 420 stainless steel results in significant improvement on wear resistance, which reaches a steady level when the volume fraction of TiC increases to 11% and does not show obvious variation if the TiC content is further increased. 展开更多

(ZrB2+Al2O3+Al3Zr)/A356 composites were synthesized by melt direct reaction from A356-(K2ZrF6+KBF4+Na2B4O7) system.The phase compositions and the microstructures of the as-prepared composites were investigated by XRD,SEM and TEM.The results show that the reinforcements are composed of ZrB2 and Al2O3 ceramic phase particles and Al3Zr intermetallic particles.The ZrB2 particulates are easy to join together to form some particle clusters and distribute along the α(Al) grain boundary.The morphologies of the ZrB2 particulates are in hexagon-shape with the size of about 50 nm.The TEM investigation results of Al3Zr indicate that Al3Zr grows in the form of facet with the length-diameter ratio of about 20.The morphologies of Al2O3 particles are in rectangular-shape and ellipsoidal-shape,with the size of about 0.1 μm.In addition,the interfaces of the matrix and particles are net and no interfacial outgrowth is observed. 展开更多

The microstructural evolution and phase transformations during partial remelting of in-situ Mg2Sip/AM60B composite modified by SiC and Sr were investigated. The results indicate that SiC and Sr are effective for refining primary α-Mg grains and Mg2Si particles. After being partially remelted, a semisolid microstructure with small and spheroidal primary α-Mg particles can be obtained. The microstructural evolution during partial remelting can be divided into four stages: the initial rapid coarsening, structural separation, spheroidization and final coarsening, which are essentially caused by the phase transformations of β→α, α+β→L and α→L, α→L, and α→L and L→α, respectively. The Mg2Si particles have not obvious effect on the general microstructural evolution steps, but can slower the evolution progress and change the coarsening mechanism. During partial remelting, Mg2Si particles first become blunt and then become spheroidal because of melting of their edges and corners, and finally are coarsened owing to Ostwald ripening. 展开更多

Using titanium wires (99.5%, 200 μm in diameter) as a reactive source, an Al-based composite coating reinforced by titanium tri-aluminide (A13Ti) particles was fabricated by infiltration plus in-situ methods. According to the differential thermal analysis (DTA) curve, the reactive temperature between Ti wires and A1 matrix can be determined at 890 ℃. The obtained composite coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and microhardness and wear test. The experimental results show that when holding period is 20 min at 890℃, the titanium wires react completely to in-situ synthesize Al3Ti particles, which presents blocky and strip-like states. The microhardness of in-situ synthesized Al3Ti particles is about 4.5 times that of the Al-matrix. Under the condition of dry sliding at 10 N load, compared with the unreinforced Al matrix, the composite coating fabricated with 20 min offers unique wear resistance behavior, and its wear mechanism is that the adhesive wear and abrasive wear coexist. 展开更多

The influence of Ti-Si-Mg-AI wire on microstructure and mechanical properties of SiCp/A1 metal matrix composite joints produced by plasma arc in-situ weld-alloying was investigated. Argon-nitrogen mixture was used as plasma gas and Ti-Si-Mg-A1 flux-cored wires as filled composites. Weldments were submitted to tensile test. Meanwhile, the macro morphology and microstructure of the joints were examined. The result shows that the formation ofneedie-like harmful phase A14C3 is effectively inhibited and the wettability of molten pool is improved by adding Ti-Si-Mg-A1 flux-cored wires. With 15Ti-5Si-5Mg-A1 flux-cored wire as filled composite, the maximum tensile strength of the welded joint is 267 MPa, which is up to 83% that of the matrix composites under annealed condition. 展开更多

In situ TiB2/7055 composites were successfully synthesized via magnetic chemical direct melt reaction from 7055 (Al-3B)?Ti system. The phase composition and the microstructure of the composites were investigated by XRD, OM and SEM technologies, and the mechanical and wear properties were tested. The results indicate that with the pulsed magnetic field assistance, the morphologies of in situ TiB2 particles are mainly hexagonal-shape or nearly spherical, the sizes are less than 1 μm, and the distribution of the matrix is uniform. Compared the microstructures of the 7055 aluminum matrix composites synthesized without pulsed magnetic field, the average size ofα(Al) phase with pulsed magnetic field assistance is decreased from 20 to 10μm, the array of the second phase is changed from continuous net-shape to discontinuous shape. With the pulsed magnetic field, the tensile strengths of the composites are enhanced from 310 to 330 MPa, and the elongations are increased from 7.5%to 8.0%. In addition, compared with matrix alloy, the wear mass loss of the composites is decreased from 111 to 78 mg under a load of 100 N for 120 min. 展开更多

Polypyrrole‐modified graphitic carbon nitride composites(PPy/g‐C3N4)are fabricated using an in‐situ polymerization method to improve the visible light photocatalytic activity of g‐C3N4.The PPy/g‐C3N4 is applied to the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue(MB)under visible light irradiation.Various characterization techniques are employed to investigate the relationship between the structural properties and photoactivities of the as‐prepared composites.Results show that the specific surface area of the PPy/g‐C3N4 composites increases upon assembly of the amorphous PPy nanoparticles on the g‐C3N4 surface.Owing to the strong conductivity,the PPy can be used as a transition channel for electrons to move onto the g‐C3N4 surface,thus inhibiting the recombination of photogenerated carriers of g‐C3N4 and improving the photocatalytic performance.The elevated light adsorption of PPy/g‐C3N4 composites is attributed to the strong absorption coefficient of PPy.The composite containing 0.75 wt%PPy exhibits a photocatalytic efficiency that is 3 times higher than that of g‐C3N4 in 2 h.Moreover,the degradation kinetics follow a pseudo‐first‐order model.A detailed photocatalytic mechanism is proposed with·OH and·O2-radicals as the main reactive species.The present work provides new insights into the mechanistic understanding of PPy in PPy/g‐C3N4 composites for environmental applications. 展开更多

The effect of Fe-impurity(0.2%-2%, mass fraction) on the microstructure, dry sliding wear, and friction properties of Al-15 Mg2 Si composite was investigated using a pin-on-disk tester under the applied pressures of 0.25, 0.5 and 1 MPa at a constant sliding speed of 0.13 m/s. According to the results, Fe modified the primary Mg2 Si particles from irregular dendritic form to smaller particles with polyhedral shapes, refined the pseudo-eutectic structure, and led to the formation of hard b-Al5 Fe Si platelets in the matrix. In spite of hardness improvement by these microstructural changes, the resistance of the composite against dry sliding wear was impaired. SEM examination of the worn surfaces, wear debris, and subsurface regions confirmed the negative effect of b-phase on the tribological properties. It was found that b-particles were fractured easily, thereby decreasing the potential of the substrate to resist against sliding stresses and giving rise to the instability and easy detachment of tribolayer as large delaminated debris. A kind of Al-TiB2/TiC in situ composite with a homogenous microstructure was successfully prepared through in situ reaction of pure Ti and Al-B-C alloy with molten aluminum.In order to improve the distribution of the particles and mechanical properties of the composites,subsequent hot rolling with increasing reduction was carried out.The microstructure evolution of the composites was characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM)and the mechanical properties were studied through tensile tests and microhardness measurement.It is found that both the microstructure uniformity and mechanical properties of the composites are significantly improved with increasing rolling reduction.The ultimate tensile strength and microhardness of the composites with90%rolling reduction reach185.9MPa and HV59.8,respectively,140%and35%higher than those of as-cast ones.Furthermore,the strengthening mechanism of the composite was analyzed based on the fracture morphologies. 展开更多

To study the influence of B4C particle size on the microstructure and damping capacities of(B_(4)C+Ti)/Mg composites,in situ reactive infiltration technique was utilized to prepare Mg-matrix composites.The microstructure,produced phases and damping capacities of the composites prepared with different particle size of B4C were characterized and analyzed.The results show that the reaction between B4C and Ti tends to be more complete when finer B_(4)C particle was used to prepare the composites.But the microstructure of the as-prepared composites is more homogenous when B4C and Ti have similar particle size.The strain-dependent damping capacities of(B_(4)C+Ti)/Mg composites improve gradually with the increase of strain amplitude,and composites prepared with coarser B4C particles tend to have higher damping capacities.The temperature-dependent damping capacities improve with increasing the measuring temperatures,and the kind of damping capacities of the composites prepared with 5mm B4C are inferior to those of coarser particles.The dominant damping mechanism for the strain-damping capacity is dislocation damping and plastic zone damping,while that for the temperature-damping capacity is interface damping or grain boundary damping. 展开更多

Titanium-matrix composites have important and wide applications in the transport and aerospace industries. The current research was focused on powder metallurgy processing of in-situ reinforced titanium-matrix composite with Ti B whiskers. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy and B4 C additive powders were used as raw materials. Two different consolidation techniques, namely press-and-sintering and spark plasma sintering, were selected. It was observed that in-situ Ti B whiskers were formed during sintering in both methods. The changes in size, aspect ratio and distribution of in-situ whiskers in different composite samples were monitored. The effect of spark plasma sintering temperature on the synthesis of in-situ whiskers was also investigated. Based on the microstructural observations(optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy) and the energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis, it was concluded that increasing the spark plasma sintering temperature from 900 to 1100 °C would lead to the complete formation of in-situ Ti B whiskers and reduced porosity content. 展开更多
