Lexical chunks theory supports the development of syntactic rules, helps learners to achieve idiomaticity and appropriateness of business expressions, and benefits successful business communication. Through the study of lexical chunks, the major findings are that possibility of lexical chunks in business English correspondences is relatively high, and among factors influencing discourse coherence, lexical chunks are the main point that has already attracted much attention of users. Based on the study, some pedagogical suggestions are provided in business English correspondence writing class.展开更多

This paper explores task complexity from the cognitive perspective by analyzing two studies with Skehan's limited capacity hypothesis and Robinson's cognition hypothesis. The two studies, namely You-Jin Kim's (2012) and Mirdamadi and Jong (2015), explore on how linguistic complexity affects language performance. Two hypotheses, Skehan's limited capacity hypothesis and Robinson's cognition hypothesis, explain the two studies from the cognitive perspective by predicting either that increasing task complexity reduces a pool of attentional capacity during task performance or that increasing complex tasks promotes greater accuracy and complexity of speech and writing. It is suggested that language teaching, syllabus designing in particular, should be based on the basis of task complexity.展开更多

In the light of the problems in current foreign language teaching and foreign language education policy, the paper has put forward some reform proposals including 'differentiating cities from rural areas, stressing teaching efficiency and cutting down class hours, and offering a foreign language in schools either as a compulsory or as a selective course according to different needs of students'. In conclusion, the paper holds that the reform measures will bring benefit to the country as well as to its people and should be a guide to the reform of China's foreign language education.展开更多
