The main principles of project teaching, the technology of its adoption in teaching process, and some kinds of projects used in studying are reviewed. During the research the following methods were used: theoretical analysis, empirical, and statistical. While studying the course "Professional foreign language", the monitoring of effectiveness of project method use in teaching a foreign language was made. Monitoring was conducted under the following criteria: percent of progress, percent of quality of knowledge, and the level of motivation in studying English. The experience showed that in the process of project work learners' general educational abilities, special abilities, and communication abilities are developed.展开更多

The former encompasses a wide range of teachereducation initiatives at the levels of diploma, bachelor’s degree, postgraduate diploma, and even master’s degree for teacher licensure purposes. These are widely documented in the literature. What is important is how teacher professional development contributes to bolstering the teachereducator force, which is relatively insufficiently documented due to the very fact that different educational systems have somewhat different expectations of such programs in relation to the ideologies and theories underpinning the teacher professional development program design and curriculum offering. Taking stock of a postgraduate diploma program in English language teaching(PGDELT) for teachers’ continuing professional development with a 31-year history housed at a premier teacher education institution in Singapore, which has successfully graduated over 1, 000 English language teachers for colleges and universities in China, I intend to highlight some of its key features, as a former student and then a lecturer on the program, in order to draw implications for sustainable growth of language teacher education programs, especially those whose main purposes are to prepare teachers of English as a second or foreign language(ESL/EFL) and provide continuing professional development opportunities for such inservice teachers.展开更多

In order to get a better understanding about autonomous learning competence of freshmen of English major in university, this investigation was conducted in the form of questionnaire and was analyzed according to the data collected. The investigation found that autonomous learning competence of freshmen is poor and worrying. Freshmen have strong motivation for English learning, but they keep old learning habit and more rely on teachers. They are incapable of employing metacognitive strategies in their language learning and are not good at utilizing related learning resources available to them. All these deficiencies hinder improvement of them. So they are in great need of fostering the competence of automous learning.展开更多

Therefore, it is of great importance to promote foreign language teaching quality. In this paper, we discuss how to fully utilize the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) theory to enhance professional foreign language teaching quality. ESP refers to a type of teaching concept or approach as the counterpart of English for General Purposes (EGP), which contains a vast range of aspects. Particularly, we propose two English course design methods based on the ESP theory, that is, 1) language centered curriculum design, and 2) learning centered curriculum design. Finally, experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can significantly improve teaching quality.展开更多

On a basis of classroom discourse analysis, this paper has observed 14 courses with 21 hours in total from advanced and fundamental grades in an English department. The classroom observation has been transcribed to analyze the features of teacher talk in various English courses in terms of five dimensions--discourse quantity, questioning types, feedback manners, interactional modification features, and conversation chains, It is found that on average there is significant difference in those five dimensions between fundamental and advanced courses. In terms of discourse quantity, the teacher talk has occupied more than 80% of the total talk amount and the total teacher talk in advanced courses is more than that in fundamental ones; the number of display questions is much more than that of referential questions; evaluative feedbacks are more than discursive ones; all of the teachers prefer to employ confirmation checks to modify students' answer, and half of the conversational chains are IRF (Initial-Response-Follow-up) structure while another half are full of complicated chains. The paper then provides some suggestions and implications for EFL teaching in the light of these findings.展开更多

The study is both quantitative and qualitative. Over the years students of BFSU and SHISU have shown a progress of possessing more and more appropriate methodological expertise in selecting research topics. More and more students have examined relatively new translation theories. We also see a change from picking overdone topics to more and more original topics. Our progress in no small part thanks to our administrative measures. As for GSTI of BFSU, however there is a demand for elective courses to cover areas such as interdisciplinary approaches to translation and multimedia, which are untouched in the current courses that focus on professional translation and interpretation. We might also want to sharpen students' language skill in providing purposefully language-rich texts for practices and allowing for more diversified options, such as introducing texts in world literature, ethnic English literature, drama, poetry, and non classics. The GSTI's long term cooperation with well-known organizations, both domestic and international, especially with United Nations at Geneva and New York, and European Union, offers students many on site training and field experiences. We might also want to introduce functional research methods, thus students can learn how to transform their field experiences into academic work.展开更多

Since Krashen put forward the affective filter hypothesis, more and more concern has been paid to the anxiety problem by foreign language educators and researchers at home and aboard. Among them, one qualitative research in Reticence and Anxiety in Second Language Learning by Amy B. M. Tusi stood out and received much attention. My project intends to justify the causes for foreign language classroom anxiety and corresponding strategies, based on the research of Amy B. M. Tusi (1985). The subjects in Tsui's project are English teachers in secondary school. Little research has been done on non-English-major students in the general university of technology in mainland of China. Therefore, this thesis will provide some practical data and suggestions for the research in this field. The whole thesis consists of five chapters. The first two chapters mainly discuss the definition, the causes of foreign language classroom anxiety and current research in this field. The third and the fourth parts focus on the research in this thesis: objects, subjects, instruments, methodology and data results and analysis. The study shows that because of the difference in English proficiency level, style of cognition, culture, and educational background among students, five factors and five strategies for foreign language classroom anxiety proposed by Amy B. M. Tusi only fit some students in college English class. Based on the data results, five personal proposals are put forward, and I hope these proposals will provide some options for practicing English teachers of non-English-major instruction in the general university technology to cope with foreign language anxiety.展开更多
