Starting from the short story "The Parrot and Descartes" by Pauline Melville, we argue that Cartesianism has influenced a view on education which tends to consider good and valuable what is "scientific", "objective" and "universal". The subjective and the local seem to be considered undesirable and unreliable. Brazilian scholars on the education field, such as Coracini and Souza are important support for our argument.展开更多
Social practice is an indispensable component of talents cultivation in universities and a necessary approach to lead students' rapid self=development. As one of the applications of Social practice of talents cultiva...Social practice is an indispensable component of talents cultivation in universities and a necessary approach to lead students' rapid self=development. As one of the applications of Social practice of talents cultivation, practical education in universities refers to a fresh new university education mode: the coordinated development of teaching, managing and serving in universities. Foreign language majors are laden with heavy responsibility ofintemational communications and how to develop and promote the practical education for those students seems much more important and necessary. The paper tries to probe into the practical education mode of foreign language majors in universities and the conclusions are as follows: (1) This mode depends largely the combination of practical education and education of socialist core value system, course studying, career planning, employment and entrepreneurship, serving the society, and financial aid. (2) This mode is able to provide an effective exemplification for the cultivation of the high-qualified and well-educated foreign language talents. (3) This mode is expected to reach the object of talent cultivation in higher education: to cultivate students who are able to contribute to the development of the country in different areas.展开更多
