Biot theory research has been extended to the multi-scale heterogeneity in actual rocks. Focused on laboratory frequency bandwidth studies, we discuss the relationships between double-porosity and BISQ wave equations, analytically derive the degeneration method for double-porosity's return to BISQ, and give three necessary conditions which the degeneration must satisfy. By introducing dynamic permeability and tortuosity theory, a full set of dynamic double-porosity wave equations are derived. A narrow band approximation is made to simplify the numerical simulation for dynamic double-porosity wavefields. Finally, the pseudo-spectral method is used for wave simulation within the laboratory frequency band (50 kHz). Numerical results have proved the feasibility for dynamic double-porosity's description of squirt flow and the validity of the quasi-static approximation method. 展开更多

This study aims to investigate methyl tert-butyl ether(MTBE) dissolution in saturated porous media.A series of1 D column experiments were conducted in laboratory to obtain MTBE dissolution data with different groundwater velocity,initial MTBE saturation and grain size of porous medium,and in the presence of other nonaqueous liquids.Results indicate that higher groundwater velocity increases MTBE dissolution rate and higher initial MTBE saturation reduces effective permeability to slow MTBE dissolution rate.Smaller grain size medium gives higher MTBE dissolution rate because of higher permeability.The addition of trichloroethylene enhances MTBE dissolution,with an optimal mass ratio of 10:2,while the presence of p-xylene prolongs complete dissolution of MTBE.Mass transfer correlations are developed for MTBE dissolution rate based on the degree of MTBE saturation Sn.Mass transfer rate is characterized by Re' with a high exponent for 0.3000<Sn<0.5482,while it is related to medium grain size and Sn for Sn≤0.3000. 展开更多

Despite financial pressure, HIFA has invested heavily in the infi'aslructure. The classrooms at HIFA can be roughly divided into three kinds: studios, multimedia classrooms and computer labs with reference to ICT. There are three general approaches to the instructional use of the technology at HIFA, namely: learning about computers and the Intemet; learning with computers and the Intemet and learning through computers and the Internet. The utilization oflCT has shaped the art education model of HIFA considerably and has brought about a lot of changes and benefits to the faculty and students. Confidence Level Based on Ridge Estimator in Process Measurement and Its Application

Ordinary least squares(OLS) algorithm is widely applied in process measurement, because the sensor model used to estimate unknown parameters can be approximated through multivariate linear model. However, with few or noisy data or multi-collinearity, unbiased OLS leads to large variance. Biased estimators, especially ridge estimator, have been introduced to improve OLS by trading bias for variance. Ridge estimator is feasible as an estimator with smaller variance. At the same confidence level, with additive noise as the normal random variable, the less variance one estimator has, the shorter the two-sided symmetric confidence interval is. However, this finding is limited to the unbiased estimator and few studies analyze and compare the confidence levels between ridge estimator and OLS. This paper derives the matrix of ridge parameters under necessary and sufficient conditions based on which ridge estimator is superior to OLS in terms of mean squares error matrix, rather than mean squares error.Then the confidence levels between ridge estimator and OLS are compared under the condition of OLS fixed symmetric confidence interval, rather than the criteria for evaluating the validity of different unbiased estimators. We conclude that the confidence level of ridge estimator can not be directly compared with that of OLS based on the criteria available for unbiased estimators, which is verified by a simulation and a laboratory scale experiment on a single parameter measurement. 展开更多

In vivo fluorescence methods are efficient tools for studying the distribution of phytoplankton in nature.Different algae species usually have different pigments with different ratios,which results in different fluorescence emission spectra.Based on multiple excitation wavelength fluorescence emission spectra,a discrimination technique is established in this study.The discrimination method,established by multivariate linear regression and weighted least-squares,was used to differentiate the samples cultured in the laboratory and collected from Jiaozhou Bay near Qingdao at the division level.The correctly discriminated samples were ≥ 86% for single algae samples,≥ 88% for simulatively mixed ones,≥ 91% for physically mixed ones and 100% for samples collected from Jiaozhou Bay.The result in this research is more definite for the physically mixed samples in the laboratory.The method described here can be employed to monitor the phytoplankton population in the marine environment. 展开更多

On the basis of multifaceted investigations of approximately 600 phytosociological surveys of foxtail meadows taken in years 2002-2012 in river valleys with the assistance of the Braun-Blanquet method, the authors carried out evaluation of the floristic composition with respect to phytosociological structure, floristic variability, degree of synanthropisation and life form structures. In addition, they ascertained the dependence of floristic variability of Alopecuretum pratensis phytocenoses on site conditions determined using: the phytoindication method and the laboratory analyses assessed the soil content of available forms of P and K and of Mg. The greatest areas among the recognised syntaxons are taken up by patches of a typical sub-association developed in fresh sites on soils of lightly acid reaction and moderate nitrogen availability. Floristic variability of Alopecuretum pratensis is characterised by: presence in the phytosociological structure of species characteristic for other syntaxons, floristic abundance and botanical structure, domination of species of the 1 st and 2nd degree of stability, high proportion of synanthropic species, values of the floristic diversity index (H'), natural and fodder score values. Geobotanical variability of foxtail meadows confirms difficulties with unequivocal determination of the systematic position of the Alopecuretum pratensis association. 展开更多

The ranked layers are divided into several groups. ML decoding is performed jointly for the layers within the same group while the Decision Feedback Equalization (DFE) is performed for groups. Based on the assumption of QPSK modulation and the quasi-static flat fading channel, simulations are made to testify the performance of the proposed algorithm. The results show that the algorithm outperforms the original V-BLAST detection dramatically in Symbol Error Probability (SEP) per- formance. Specifically, Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) improvement of 3.4dB is obtained for SEP of 10?2 (4×4 case), with a reasonable complexity maintained. 展开更多

We used a field survey and a laboratory rearing experiment to (a) examine response (size and survival) to life-long hypoxia in offspring of the African maternal mouth-brooding cichlid Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor victoriae (Seegers) and (b) explore the degree to which developmental response can be environmentaUy-induced. Embryo size metrics were quantified in 9 field populations across a range of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. In the laboratory, first generation (F1) broods of low-DO origin were reared under high or low DO. Brooding period was quantified for the mothers; and egg size, egg metabolic rate and juvenile size-at-release were quantified in their (F2) offspring. The F2 offspring were split and grown for 3 months post-release under high or low DO, and juvenile size and survival were quantified. In the field survey, across stages, embryos from low-DO field populations were shorter and weighed less than embryos from high-DO populations. In the laboratory experi- ment, F2 eggs and juveniles-at-release from mother's mouth did not differ in mass, length, survival regardless of development DO environment. However, juveniles diverged in size after leaving mother's mouth, exhibiting smaller size when grown under low DO. Size differences in embryo size across field populations and divergence in embryo size after release from the mother's mouth support predictions for smaller body size under hypoxia. There was no evidence for negative effects on survival of juveniles after 3 months. Brooding period was 16% shorter in females reared under low DO suggesting that hypoxia may accelerate embryo de- velopment. This work provides insights into how bearer fishes respond to hypoxic stress relative to fishes with no post-spawning parental care; a shorter brooding interval and smaller body size may provide an optimal solution to parent and embryo survival under hypoxia in brooding fishes [Current Zoology 58 (3): 401-412, 2012]. 展开更多

The pollution of freshwater ecosystems is threatening freshwater plant species diversity worldwide.Freshwater plants,such as the common duckweed(Lemna minor),are potentially sensitive to novel stressful environments.To test if ecotype diversity could increase resistance to stressful environments,I used seven L.minor populations and measured their growth rates with and without moderate salt stress across an ecotype diversity gradient.The L.minor populations were grown over 5 months in 92 experimental mesocosms,either in ecotype monocultures or in polyculture with either one or three conspecific ecotypes(23 unique compositions).After growing the duckweed in unperturbed conditions(phase 1),the cultures were subjected to moderate salt stress(50 mmol/L NaCl)for several weeks(phase 2).The experiment was conducted in the presence of the natural epimicrobial community associated with the different ecotypes.In phase 2,a subset of these algae added an unintentional second stressor to the experiment.The ecotypes differed in their growth rates,the fastest growing at twice the rate of others.The diversity context further shaped the ecotype growth rates.Ecotype polycultures showed higher abundances towards the end of the experiment,thus over time,as the environment deteriorated,ecotype diversity gained in importance.These findings show that within-species variation in growth rates can translate to a positive effect of ecotype diversity on population abundance.Exposure of L.minor to moderate salt levels did not significantly impact growth rates,although the effect may have been masked by reduced algal stress in the saline environments. 展开更多
