So Chinese dream and American dream are similar, they are expressed in different ways, and different expressions originate from different cultures and civilizations. So how to facilitate cross-cultural understanding? I have three points: first, recognize the diversity of Western civilization; second, striking a connection between China and the West; third, a reflexive approach.展开更多

The lack of cures for most of these diseases which often led to death during the respective period seems to account for such literary representations of poor bodily conditions. The purpose of this paper is, however, to go beyond this handy and obvious explanation regarding illness in the BrontE sisters' novels and approach aspects such as: Victorian relationships between women and men, the condition of Victorian women in terms of social and domestic status, positions and roles, and rights and education in a patriarchal age. The novels that shall constitute the support for our analysis are The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (2001) by Anne Bronte, Jane Eyre (2001) by CharIotte Bronte, and Wuthering Heights (1985) by Emily Bronte.展开更多

The alleged tragic hero, Paul, is patriarchal, self-centered, and sometimes even sadistic. This paper gives respective analysis of the Victorian morality and industrial civilization. Mrs. Morel is pitifully diagnosed with Oedipus complex, which enables her to be a powerful hermaphrodite and gains access to power Miriam is also imprisoned by Victorian morality, but her world is not purely spiritual. Paul just cannot see the physical aspect of her, so he refuses to enter her world. Clara is the woman who makes Paul a real man, but Paul only sees the physical aspect of her. So Paul's patriarchal character is revealed in the discussion of these three women. This paper explores the cause of these women's struggle and points out that the problems these characters face still exist and need to be solved today展开更多

Hydrology and biodiversity in 28 natural and restored wetlands suggested uncontrolled natural wetlands provided the highest mean annual flood storage at 15 cm of runoff while single and 2-stage outlet controlled wetlands provided 3.0 and 8.1 cm of runoff control. Natural controlled wetlands, followed by 2-stage and single stage outlet controlled restorations provided 10.2, 6.6, and 2.2 cm of storage for early summer storm events. Two years of recorded water levels and a 20-year continuous meteorological record were used to model "temporary water level increases" in each wetland. Species diversity, hydrology, and watershed land use variables are inversely related where high quality and diverse wetlands had the lowest amplitude and frequency of water level increases, while low quality wetlands had the highest. Uncontrolled natural wetlands had the highest biological diversity and the lowest frequency and magnitude of temporary water levels increased. A significant biodiversity declines were measured where water level increases were greater than 2.7 meters. Strong multi-linear relationships between watershed land uses and watershed/wetland ratio explained wetland hydraulic performance and biodiversity relations (r2 ranging from 0.6-0.8). Non-native wetland plant diversity increased with greater water level dynamics.展开更多

Rather, it is the product of the false logic of development. This is primarily reflected in the fact that production is not undertaken for the sake of human survival needs, but rather for the sake of capital profit, while nature becomes a resource that serves the market and is controlled by outside forces. In taking measures to protect the environment, the state has overlooked the role of local residents. Ecological civilization requires that we conserve and utilize resources in an equitable way. Fairness and conservation lie at the heart of ecological civilization. However, conservation does not just mean reducing resource consumption; more importantly, we must establish diverse modes of production and ways of life that are suited to China's natural endowments. Also, fairness does not simply refer to narrowing the income gap; the important thing is for different groups of people to participate on an equal basis in decision-making and action relating to environmental development and protection.展开更多

文摘The paper argues that the three women are all tragic characters and their tragedies lie in the fact that they only function as stones in Paul's life road to art and the world of men and their suffering from the imprisonment of the patriarchal society.
