Pulsed disc and doughnut solvent extraction columns (PDDC) have been used for a range of important applications such as ura- nium extraction and nuclear fuel recycling. Although the dispersed phase holdup in a PDDC has been presented by some researchers, there is still the need to develop a robust correlation that can predict the experimental dispersed phase holdup over a range of operating conditions including the effects of mass transfer direction. In this study, dis- persed phase holdup data from different literature sources for a PDDC were used to refit constants for the correlation presented by Kumar and Hartland lind. Eng. Chem. Res.,27 (1988),131-138] which did not consider the effect of col- umn geometry. In order to incorporate the characteristic length of the PDDC (i.e. the plate spacing), the unified cor- relation for holdup proposed by Kumar and Hartland based on data from eight different types of columns [Ind. Eng. Chem. Res.,34 (1995) 3925-3940] was refitted to the PDDC data. New constants have been presented for each hold- up correlation for a PDDC based on regression analysis using published holdup data from PDDCs that cover a range of onerating conditions and nhwical nronerties and consider the direction of mass transfer.展开更多

However, their extraction efficiencies have rarely been quantitatively compared using rigorous mathematical methods. In this paper, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed to evaluate the performance of ASE, MAE and UAE in the overall extraction of PCBs, DDTs and HCHs by analysis of their recoveries from the Standard Reference Material IAEA-417, a sediment sample certified by many international laboratories. Conclusions were drawn at a significance level of P〈 0.05. No significant differences were found among the mean values for method recoveries using ASE, MAE and UAE. The mean values for real recoveries using ASE and MAE were nearly identical, but the real recovery using UAE was much lower. The concentrations of all PCBs, DDTs and HCHs except for CB52 and o,p'-DDT using UAE were the lowest. Comparing the results obtained using ASE with MAE, the concentrations of CB28, CB52, CB138, ct-HCH, [3-HCH, p,p'-DDE and p,p'-DDD were nearly identical, while the concentrations of other compounds were significantly different. Based on the low recoveries, it was concluded that UAE is a relatively inefficient extraction method, while ASE and MAE are equivalent methods. Taking into consideration the relative standard deviation (RSD) values, solvent volume, extraction time, and purchasing costs of the apparatus, MAE was considered superior to ASE for extraction of PCBs, DDTs and HCHs.展开更多

In this work, the potential of MD to reduce solvent in the polyphenol rich propolis extract was further investigated. Polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) membranes were engineered with the smaller pore size for the less hydrophobic surface in order to avoid wetting, allowing only the solvent vapor to be transferred from the warm feed into the cold permeate. All the membranes exhibited more than 95% rejection of phenolic and flavonoid compounds. Although the hydrophilic membranes exhibited less fouling, they displayed a lower flux than the hydrophobic membrane due to the hindrance in the wetted pores. The hydrophobic membrane was seriously fouled by the phenolic acid as shown in the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectrum. Pore plugging occurred on these hydrophobic membranes as confirmed in the scanning electron microscope images.展开更多

Exact calculation of this problem leads to perform more robust reservoir simulation and reliable prediction. There are various techniques that have been proposed to solve convection-dispersion equation. To check the validity of these techniques, the convection-dispersion equation was solved numerically using a series of well known numerical techniques. Such techniques that employed in this study include method of line, explicit, implicit, Crank-Nicolson and Barakat-Clark. Several cases were considered as input, and convection-dispersion equation was solved using the aforementioned techniques. Moreover the error analysis was also carried out based on the comparison of numerical and analytical results. Finally it was observed that method of line and explicit methods are not capable of simulating the convection-dispersion equation for wide range of input parameters. The Barakat-Clark method was also failed to predict accurate results and in some cases it had large deviation from analytical solution. On the other hand, the simulation results of implicit and Crank-Nicolson have more qualitative and quantitative agreement with those obtained by the analytical solutions.展开更多

In this work, we prepared an amphiphilic dendrimer modified PEG-PLA mixed nanoparticles(NPs) by a double emulsion-solvent evaporation(DESE) method. The particle size and drug encapsulation efficacy(EE) were compared to evaluate and optimize the preparation parameters. The mixed NPs had average size ranging from(102±1) nm to(137±5) nm, and the zeta potential turned to positive with incorporation of the amphiphilic dendrimer. The NPs showed different EE of docetaxel(DTX) and paclitaxel(PTX) with higher affinity to more lipophilic PTX. The blank mixed NPs showed little cytotoxicity, and the DTX-loaded NPs could effectively facilitate the antiproliferation activity on PC-3 cells. The NPs could be used as an effective drug delivery system, and its anti-tumor effect is worthy of further study.展开更多

Characterization of the obtained adsorbents was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The adsorption kinetics and equilibrium isotherms were in- vestigated in batch experiments. The Langmuir, Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetic models agree well with the experimental data. The adsorption of As(III) onto CS/Fe3OdFe(OH)3 microspheres occurred rapidly and reached adsorption equilibrium after about 45 min. The maximum adsorption capacity of CS/Fe3OJFe(OH)3 microspheres, calculated by the Langmuir isotherm model, was 8.47 mg g 1, which is higher than that of CS/Fe304/Fe(OH)3 prepared by the conventional method (4.72 mg g-l). The results showed that the microspheres had a high adsorption capacity for As(III) and a high separation efficiency due to their microporous structure and superparamagnetic characteristics. Present research may eventually lead to a simple and low cost method for fabricating microporous materials and application for removal of arsenic from aqueous solution.展开更多
