The research was conducted in a synthetic survey for soil, species di-versity, roadside trees and ecological function of urban vegetation in Guangzhou City. The results showed that: (1) soil densi-ties of urban roadside and park forests were higher than mean density of natural forest soil. The pH values of soil in urban roadside were higher too, and the content of organic matter and the concentration of nitrogen were lower. (2) Species diversity of urban vegetation was lower. The most number of species was only 16 species in tree layers of urban forest. (3) Tree growth was limited by narrow space in high-density urban area, where the trees with defects and disorders were common. (4) Com-paring with mature natural forests, the productivity of urban vegetation was lower. The effect of urban vegetation on balance of carbon and oxygen were influenced by the low primary production of urban vegetation. Therefore, the growth condition for urban vegetation should be improved. Biodiversity, primary production and ecological function should be increased for urban vegetation in order to improve urban eco-environment.展开更多

Along the latitudinal gradient, soil samples were collected from north (Hailun) to south (Gongzhuling) down to a depth of 100 cm with intervals of 030, 20-40, 40-60, 60-80, and 80-100 cm. The nematode abundance and taxonomic diversity (generic richness) were lower at Hailun than at other sites, and higher values of evenness were observed at Hailun and Harbin than at Dehui and Gongzhuling. Nematode faunal analysis revealed that soil food web at Hailun was sueeessionally more mature or structured, and the environment little disturbed, while at Harbin and Gongzhuling, the soil food web was degraded with stressed environment. The environmental variables relevant in explaining the patterns of nematode distribution and diversity in phaeozem agroecosystems, using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), were the mean annual temperature, total nitrogen, electrical conductivity, mean annual precipitation, and other soil properties. Among these variables, the mean annual temperature was a relatively important factor, which could explain 29.05% of the variations in nematode composition.展开更多

A series of serious eco-environmental hazard affecting hilly city, have appeared: the forest landscape has been fragmented; the stability of ecological system has nat been maintained: soil erosion has been serionus; geological disasters have become more and more frequented; the phenomenon of city "heat islands" is obvious: and environmental pollution is worsened with Iow physical self-puri- fication. All of the hazards above will affect ecological security of the tail area of the Three Gorges Reservoir and sustainable development of Changqing. In order to guarantee ecological security and health of Chongqing and the Three Gorges Reservoir, the eountermeasures for ecological infrastructure construction are put forward: quickly drawing up ecological infrastructure planning of Chongqing Municipality, strengthening the integration and continuation of hilly-water spatial pattern, maintaining the diversity and stability of local ecosystem, establishing the green space system in-cluding suburban.forest, farmland and green space. recovering wetland ecosystem, optimizing industrial structure and urban spatial distribution, developing recycling economy; establishing ecological infrastructure monitoring network and information forecast system, carrying out ecological management for Chongqing Municipality and so on.展开更多

According to the investigation, there are 48 plant species of 42 genera and 28 families in Bamenwan Mangrove Forest, including 29 tree species of 24 genera and 17 families. Among the tree species, those on the top 5 in the importance value list are Hibiscus tiliaceus, Bruguiera sexangula, Lumnitzera littorea, Rhizophora apiculata, Xylocarpus granatum. There are 3 shrub species of 3 genera and 3 families, including Atalantia buxifolia, Lantana camara and Streblus asper. And there are 16 herbal species of 16 genera and 11 families, including Acrostichum aureum, Vernonia cinerea, Acanthus ilicifolius, Alocasia macrorrhiza, Synedrel a nodiflora, Gynura japonica and etc.. Diversity of the mangrove in different areas varies greatly, Shannon-Wiener index and richness index of semi-mangrove forest are both higher than those of other 3 mangrove forests. Bamenwan Mangrove Forest is characterized by diversified species and complex structures, but the community diversity is unevenly distributed because of the interventions from many factors. More human efforts are suggested to enhance the mangrove protection, so as to enrich the community diversity.展开更多

The authors emphasize the rich natural diversity of Jilin and the need to focus research efforts on understanding the potential of native species to meet the needs of land-management agencies involved in forest resource exploitation and ecological restoration. The native species of China hold great potential, and deserve more research attention, for meeting these needs. The introduction and testing of exotic species should be dbne only under rigorous scientific testing and after comparison with native species prior to operational introduction into forestry in order to avoid unwanted ecological consequences, including potential problems with alien invasives and pest introductions. The authors also emphasize the need to maintain viable (e.g., genetically diverse and reproductively fit) natural populations of native species in order to protect China's valuable natural diversity and maintain the potential of native species to function as future seed sources for local forest and ecological restoration activities.展开更多

In fact, diets are major players in biodiversity erosion, natural resources degradation, climate change, etc.. The paper aims at analysing the main environmental impacts of the Mediterranean food consumption patterns on land and water resources and biodiversity. It provides a review on water and land resources and biodiversity in the Mediterranean and an analysis of the livestock sector impacts on ecosystem services. The most recent FAO food consumption statistics and standard impact data from different sources (e.g., Water Footprint Network; Mekonnen & Hoekstra, 2010; Ewing et al., 2010) were used to calculate and discuss environmental impacts, i.e., water, carbon and ecological footprints. Mediterranean diets promote biodiversity use, conservation and sustainable natural resources management. They are more respectful of ecosystems and have lower environmental impacts than Northern Europe and American diets.展开更多

Today ecological risk scales cover territories of large regions. In this respect the territory of Azerbaijan is not exception, within which Baku is noted by very adverse ecological conditions. Complex natural conditions (presence of strong winds, high air temperature and solar radiation) complicate the city ecological situation even greater. In modem conditions a construction boom relates to the factors aggravating the ecological situation of Baku. Last 10 years the city is rapidly built on by multistoried buildings which deform it, hinder visual contacts to the environment and obstruct the natural aeration of Baku amphitheater. The modem multistoried buildings erected ignoring town-planning norms do not correspond with regional climatic conditions, essentially modify the territory wind regime, hamper in surrounding buildings insolation, neglect a territory temperature-humidity conditions. As a result, it is necessary to use energy overly for their adaptation to Baku conditions and creation comfortable microclimate in them that leads to the city environmental pollution. The planning decisions and construction materials applied in these buildings are also alien to Baku climatic conditions. For qualitative transformation of Baku environment and improvement of ecological characteristics of the residential areas the author has carried out the estimation of the city territory on a complex of climatic factors (aeration, insolation and thermal-humidity regimes). For these purposes the multidimensional statistical method is used. As a result the investigated territory of Baku is divided into 5 typological areas on climatic conditions. The brief characteristic and the general recommendations on transformation are worked out by the author for each of these typological units. Results of the research can be a basis for revealing of methods and principles of town-planning and architectural-planning organization of Baku residential areas.展开更多

In scope, the environmental policies include pollution control policies, ecological conservation policies and basic international environmental policies which should be considered based on the following aspects. (1) The urban environment issue possibly emerges in the urban inside and outside interactions, thus the government to the ecological environment must pay attention to the sector coordination, and even must global footprint from the national and criterion consideration. (2) Environmental protection is not only adapted to the needs of the environment through the transformation, but stressed that ecological construction, that is, to promote the coordination between mankind and the natural environment. Development and protection are regional which should be global and intertwined.展开更多

I...Payment for ecosystem services is a concept of environmental protection and method of environmental management that has "purchasing conservation" as a major feature and has grown around the world since the 1990 s. It is stressed by the school of environmental economics that as a voluntary mechanism of exchange between ecological service providers and demanders, payments for ecosystem services can help to increase inputs and improve efficiency. Ecological economics holds that the ecological system and the complexity of the policy environment restrict the functional space of market mechanisms. The negative influence of the objective of giving priority to efficiency on environmental protection and social fairness cannot be neglected; therefore, the exchange mechanism is just one type of eco-compensation models. Here, we posit that payments for ecosystem services is a good tool for environmental protection and increases inputs and efficiency. Although payment for ecosystem services is confronted with challenges in application, it is playing an increasingly important role in the field of ecological services with a relatively high degree of commodification. Payments for ecosystem services can also increase the cost effectiveness of publicly managed environmental projects with the cooperation of other policy tools.展开更多
