The fiber length trait (FLT) of 538 individuals from nature birch population in Maorshan region, Heilongjang, China were measured, of which 100 individuals were selected as representative variety of correlated fragm...The fiber length trait (FLT) of 538 individuals from nature birch population in Maorshan region, Heilongjang, China were measured, of which 100 individuals were selected as representative variety of correlated fragments screening with random amplified polymorphism DNA (RAPD) technique. In total of 20 RAPD primers were tested through multiple regression analysis between amplified strip and the character behaviors, and a correlative segment BFLR-16 was obtained. The correlation coefficient between BFLI-16 and FLT was 0.6144, with the significant level of 1%. BFLI-16 was then cloned, sequenced and transformed into SCAR marker. The percentage of identifying long fiber birches by this SCAR was more than 92. The result indicates that the SCAR markers has high specificity for the long fiber individuals and is highly linked with the gene controlling the character of fiber length, and its existence is significantly correlative with the increase in the fiber length.展开更多

For this purpose, 30 mix proportions of concrete with target cube compressive strength ranging from 20 to 60 MPa were cast with normal coarse aggregate and recycled coarse aggregate from different strength parent concretes. Results of 28-d test show that the strength of different types of recycled aggregate affects the concrete strength obviously. The coarse aggregate added to mortar matrix plays a skeleton role and improves its compressive strength. The skeleton effect of coarse aggregate increases with the increasing strength of coarse aggregate, and normal coarse aggregate plays the highest, whereas the lowest concrete strength occurs when using the weak recycled coarse aggregate. There is a linear relationship between the concrete strength and the corresponding mortar matrix strength. Coarse aggregate skeleton formula is established, and values from experimental tests match the derived expressions.展开更多

This study estimat...Molecular and field studies suggest that Mbuna have limited migration range and are restricted by habitat discontinuities especially in areas where rocky habitats are separated by stretches of sand. This study estimated regional diversity of Mbuna in Lake Malawi. The estimated fl-diversity for all sites was 114.5 Mbuna suggesting that there was high level of allopatrism for the species complex. Sympatric index was low in the two regions of southern and northern lake and the observed high-end richness strongly correlated with minimum species richness. The sympatric index for the whole lake was 0.8, with non-monotypic species complexes showing declining values of sympatric index and the decline was dependent on the geographical scale of the area covered. The northern region sites had mean habitat ranking of 84.5% while the southern sites had habitat ranking of 56.7% supporting the observation that there are more rocky habitats in the northern part of the lake than in the southern. Implications of habitat ranking are discussed in terms of species abundance and richness.展开更多

The partial granular temperature ratios are studied as functions of the fractal dimension D, the restitution coefflcient e, the rescaled viscosity time, the average occupied area fraction φ, the total particle number N and the number fraction. Different species of particles in a power-law system typically do not have the same mean kinetic energy, namely the granular temperature. It is found that the extent of nonequipartition of kinetic energy is determined by the fractal dimension D, the restitution coemcient e and the rescaled viscosity time, while is insensitive to the total particle number N, the area fraction φ and the number fraction.展开更多

Methods: Seventy two New Zealand white rabbits were used i...Objective: To understand the relationship between porosity, collagen fiber orientation and strength of the plated bone after rigid plate fixation and removal. Methods: Seventy two New Zealand white rabbits were used in this experiment. Eight animals served as control and the other sixty four were plated on their intact left tibiae with stainless steel (316L) 4 hole plates to induce early osteoporosis. The plates were removed 2 months after internal fixation in 40 plated animals, 8 of which were sacrificed immediately following plate removal and the other 32 were killed in successive groups with 8 in each group 1,2,3 and 4 months after plate removal. The remaining 24 plated animals were killed at 3,4 and 6 months after plate fixation. After sacrifice, the samples of plated bone were prepared for light microscope, quantitative histological analysis, polarized light microscope and biomechanical test. Results: The internal fixation with a rigid plate could induce the regional osteoporosis which manifested both bone loss and disorganized bone structure (loss of the orientation of the collagen fibers) leading to decreased strength of the plated bone. Although the regional osteoporosis could recover gradually after plate removal, the bone structure remained disorderly even when the bone mass returned to normal. Delayed restoration of bone structure was related to delayed restoration of bone strength. Conclusions: Besides the bone loss, the disorganized bone structure is the main cause of decrease of bone strength after rigid plate fixation and removal.展开更多
