The aim of this study is t...The popularity of technology has allowed universities to make changes through their educational system in recent years. Some transitioned from face-to-face instruction to online instruction. The aim of this study is to investigate the perceptions of both the instructors and the students as regards second language acquisition through online education at a rural university. The study was implemented in the context of teaching and learning English as a second language in an online education environment. The course material is based on The Net Languages Learning Platform, which is available at http://ide.yok.gov.tr/, and the course level is general English pre-elementary. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used in this study. For quantitative data collection, a questionnaire was employed to understand the reasons for low student attendance on online courses. For qualitative research method, observation was carried out, and interviews are designed as data collection techniques. Purposive selection was used for selection of the participants. The findings revealed that online education needs to be modified. The students are eager to improve their second language competencies; however, they do not want to waste their time on an easy course level.展开更多

There is a consensus in the literature that mathematical ability contributes to student success in tertiary education. More importantly, mathematical skills are necessary when successfully completing mathematics- and/...There is a consensus in the literature that mathematical ability contributes to student success in tertiary education. More importantly, mathematical skills are necessary when successfully completing mathematics- and/or science-based degrees. Social sciences such as psychology and economics require statistical skills which also require knowledge of mathematics. Even business students, such as marketing and accounting students need the necessary mathematical skills to successfully complete their degrees at university. This paper suggests that student success in a core business subject is dependent on their mathematical aptitude, attitude, and type of secondary schooling whether government or non-government schools. There is urgency for universities to recognize that high failure rates are due to insufficient mathematics exposure in secondary schooling and remedial classes might not be enough. Specifying a minimum (maths, e.g., two units) requirement for entry and/or providing bridging programs to ensure students have the necessary basic mathematical skills would increase student success in quantitative units.展开更多

The aim of the study is to make an through investigation of Chinese non-English majors' learning styles and their learning strategies in English study, and to analyze the impact of learning styles on learning strategy preferences statistically so as to provide empirical evidence in this field, and then present some implications for college English teaching and learning in Chinese context. This study has significance for pedagogy. Teachers should make language learners aware of their own learning styles and strategy preferences and help them select strategies matching their own style preferences in second language learning. Curricula also advocate an approach that allows student to understand the concepts involved supported by dynamical com...Today's math education basic syllabus gives an ever increasing emphasis to Geometry and Patterns. Curricula also advocate an approach that allows student to understand the concepts involved supported by dynamical computer tools. However, there is not much research work joining these paradigms. Therefore, a case study was developed, with 9th grade students (14-15 years old), to evaluate the impact of a creative approach to isometries and symmetries-friezes, rosaceas (rosettes) and wallpapers-centered in patterns (reproduction, continuation, completion, description and creation) and using Geometer's Sketchpad software to solve, mainly in pairs, and discuss, with the whole class, the challenging tasks proposed, involving the formulation of hypothesis, argumentation and justification of the reasoning. The statistical analysis of the quantifiable data and content analysis of the qualitative data, collecting trough enquiry, direct observation and documental analysis (involving questionnaires, field notes, logbook, pre-tests and post-test, other works of the students including those computer related, and internal documents of the school) enable to conclude positively regarding the main research question underlying the study. In fact, it led to the conclusion that the teaching strategy implemented has contributed to deepen the student's knowledge and skills on geometry, mathematical communication and autonomy as well as to develop a closer relation with the field of geometry itself. This article focuses on one of the cases studied. The pair was selected due to be representative of most students and due to their communication skills.展开更多

The participants were 45 university sophomores, whose recorded data were transcribed and evaluated correspondingly by 45 educated listeners from 22 different countries. The results reveal that although the speakers' English may have strong accents, it is intelligible to international listeners to a great extent. Phonological problems that hamper intelligibility are vowel length and quality, simplification of diphthongs, voiced and voiceless plosives, dental fricative, word ending nasals, consonant clusters as well as stress, rhythm and intonation.展开更多
