English newspapers as fresh language, popular novel, close to the life of a corpus source that is the college English teaching has always attached importance to the reference materials. According to the rhetorical characteristics of English newspapers, we set the course, it is best to learn some rhetorical knowledge after the students to open the course, English majors can learn after the rhetoric can also be extended as the rhetoric class and homework. This report presents the processes of CL implemented in two ...Studies on Cooperative Learning （CL） have demonstrated advantages and effectiveness of employing strategies of CL on English as a Second Language （ESL）. This report presents the processes of CL implemented in two English intensive reading courses at a Chinese university. The purpose is to arouse the students＇ awareness of working in groups in their English reading classroom and to enhance their reading comprehension at tertiary level. The results show that students can adapt to small group work when they realize the benefits brought to them. Although positive effectiveness of CL is prevalent at any levels in educational contexts, benefits of CL on ESL are not deeply cultivated as expected, particularly for Chinese learners of English and some problems can also be found in implementing CL. As the emphasis of curriculum of English Language Teaching （ELT） in China has been on developing students＇ competence in communication in English, it is necessary for teachers to adopt CL in classroom instructions rather than teacher-centered approaches.展开更多

Some people emphasize the importance of words and their quick identification. Others emphasize the important role of reading skills as well as background knowledge. Still others emphasize that reading comprehension is both a process of word processing and a process of information processing by means of one＇s background knowledge. General English course at Iranian universities has always been a controversial issue since the students taking this course are rather weak in English proficiency and need more authentic instructions based on accurate ...General English course at Iranian universities has always been a controversial issue since the students taking this course are rather weak in English proficiency and need more authentic instructions based on accurate need analysis. The materials applied in this course are mainly focused on reading comprehension. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to improve General English university students＇ main sub-skills of reading comprehension and see the effect of the possible changes in terms of time and the fields of study of the students. To do this, 168 university students taking General English course at university of Bojnord, including humanities, engineering, physical education, and sciences, received instruction on the main sub-skills of reading comprehension after taking a pre-test sample TOELF section of reading comprehension. After 16 sessions of 90 minute instruction, they took the post-test section of TOEFL sample of reading comprehension. Mixed between within subject analysis of variance was used to assess the impact of instruction for the four groups of students from pre-test to post-test. The findings of the study indicated that the effect of instruction in terms of time, from pre-test to post-test, and the interaction of time and fields of study were significant. Besides, changes for 10 sub-skills were the same among the four fields of study.展开更多
