[Method] Using Dongnong 42 and Dongnong 46 as experimental soybeans, four treatments were designed, including non-inoculated CK group and three treatment groups inoculated respectively with rhizobium strains R2, R, and Rs, to analysis the effects of rhizobium inoculation on growth status, phosphorus uptake, yield and quality of soybean plants. [Result] Inoculation with different rhizobium strains could significantly increase the biomass and phosphorus content of the roots and shoots of Dongnong 42, to be specific, rhizobium strain R2 showed the best ef- fect, followed by Rs, and those of roots were improved greater than the shoots; in- oculation with rhizobium could significantly increase the yield of Dongnong 42, and R5 showed the best effect, but the yield of Dongnong 46 was decreased; after in- oculated with rhizobium, the protein content and fat content of soybean were signifi- cantly increased, and R2 showed the best effect, but the effects on different varieties varied, to be specific, the protein content of Dongnong 42 was significantly in- creased, while the fat content of Dongnong 46 was significantly increased; different rhizobium strains inoculated to different soybean varieties showed different effects. Inoculation with suitable rhizobium can improve plant growth characteristics, promote phosphorus uptake of plants, increase soybean yield, and effectively improve soy- bean quality. [Conclusion] This study provides theoretical basis for solving the prob- lem of soil phosphorus deficiency, increasing soybean yield and improving soybean quality in the future.展开更多

The results showed that grain protein content and B hordein content increased as the sowing date postponed and were significantly affected by sowing date, while C and D hordein contents were less influenced by sowing date. There were significant differences in grain protein and hordein fraction content among the ten cultivars. The coefficient of variation of D hordein content was much larger than that of B and C hordein contents, suggesting its greater variation caused by different sowing dates. Beta-amylase activity and diastatic power were also significantly affected by sowing date, with malt extract being less affected. Significant differences in measured malt quality were found among the ten cultivars. Grain protein was significantly correlated with B hordein and malt extract positively and negatively, respectively. There was no significant correlation between beta-amylase activity or diastatic power and grain protein content. B hordein was negatively and significantly correlated with malt extract, but no significant correlations between C hordein, D hordein and malting quality traits.展开更多

The steppes provide important habitats for several species of cranes, including the Red-crowned Crane (Grus japonensis). I have studied the cranes in the area since 1988. The Red-crowned Crane mainly occurs in the Torey Depression (Torey Lake) and the Argun River, which represent the far western edge of the breeding area for the continental population of the Red-crowned Crane. There are some scattering records of the cranes in the Torey Depression from before 1990. The birds appeared regularly and bred from 2002–2007 at Torey Lake. There have been no records since 2008 due to the fact that the wetlands have dried out during the regional climate cycle in the Torey Depression. Three or four individual Red-crowned Cranes have been sighted in Argun in the early 2000’s and then the numbers increased steadily until 2004. At the highest peak in 2004, there were at least 30 pairs of the cranes breeding in the wetlands of the river floodplain. Since then, with the reduced water flow in the Argun River and more and more wetlands drying out, the Red-crowned Crane population decreased dramatically to four or seven territories. The cranes are facing serious threats in the Argun River, such as frequent spring fires, poaching and water pollution. We need to unify efforts from both the Russian and Chinese sides to protect the cranes and their wetland habitat in the area.展开更多

The experimental dataset included barley from three harvest years, two barley species, 77 barley varieties, and two-row and six-row barley, from 16 cultivation sites. For each sample, the malt quality indices were also assessed according to European Brewing Convention (EBC) standards. Principal component analysis (PCA) was carried out on mean-centred, normalized and derivative spectra using 200/cm width spectral bands. The most informative spectral bands were observed in the 800-1,000/cm and 1,000-1,200/cm ranges. PCA revealed that barley harvested in 2010 and in 2011 had bands that were very close together, while 2009 harvest clearly displayed a difference in its quality. PCA made it possible to distinguish two species and confirmed that two-row winter barley quality was closer to two-row spring barley quality than to six-row winter barley. Results indicate that mid-infrared spectrometry (MIR) could be a very useful and rapid analytical tool to assess barley qualitative quality.展开更多

Macadamia plants were planted in pots with mixed substrate of soil: sand: coconut-coir: rice-husk: charcoal; 3.0: 1.0: 0.5: 1.0, respectively. Micro drip-irrigation system was operated 10:00 to 16:00 h daily with a controller scheduled to pump 12 minutes at 12 intervals. The study showed that application of Enshi tablet (18 tablets/plant/year) in a drip-irrigation system enhances growth of Macadamia compared to the application of OsmocoteTM tablet, Modified-enshi and Enshi solution. Significant variation in chlorophyll (a + b) content was observed in Enshi tablet treatment. Soil chemical analyses indicated that the nutrient content in Enshi tablet appeared low compared to other formulations but nutrient removal was considerably brought down by the system, which gives a balance between nutrient removals by crops and addition through fertilizers. Hence, application of Enshi tablet is suggested for Macadamia in a drip-irrigation system.展开更多

In the eastern cropping regions of Australia, seriousinfestations of Helicoverpa punctigera (Wallengren) and H. armigera (Hiibner)(Lepidoptera:Noctuidae) are experienced annually. Regression analyses of a long series of light-trap catches ofadult moths were used to describe the seasonal dynamics of both species. The size of the springgeneration in eastern cropping zones could be related to rainfall in putative source areas in inlandAustralia. Subsequent generations could be related to the abundance of various crops inagricultural areas, rainfall and the magnitude of the spring population peak. As rainfall figuredprominently as a predictor variable, and can itself be predicted using the Southern OscillationIndex (SOI), trap catches were also related to this variable. The geographic distribution of eachspecies was modelled in relation to climate and CLIMEX was used to predict temporal variation inabundance at given putative source sites in inland Australia using historical meteorological data. These predictions were then correlated with subsequent pest abundance data in a major croppingregion. The regression-based and bio-climatic-based approaches to predicting pest abundance arecompared and their utility in predicting and interpreting pest dynamics are discussed.展开更多

Egg-laying dates differed among the three populations such that at the most northern latitude egg-laying was latest, and earliest at the most southern latitutde. Clutch size, clutch mass, egg mass, egg shape, within clutch variability in egg sizes and relative clutch mass differed among the three populations, whereas post-oviposition body mass did not. Except for egg-laying date, none of the traits examined varied in a geographically continuous trend. CZ and DH females, although separated by a distance of approximately 1100 km as the crow flies, were similar in nearly all traits examined. JS females were distinguished from CZ and DH females by their higher fecundity (clutch size), greater reproductive output (clutch mass) and more rounded eggs. Our data do not validate the prediction that larger offspring should be produced in colder localities. The absence of an egg size-number trade-off in each of the three populations presumably suggests that P. korros is among species where eggs are well optimized for size within a population.展开更多
