The effects of zinc deficiency on the serum cortisol and adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) concentration,and the cerebrum nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity in rats were studied.Growing rats were allotted to three groups,which were zinc deficiency (ZD),paired fed (PF) and zinc supplementation after feeding zinc deficient food for 21 days (ZS).The duration of feed test was 35 days.Compared with PF rats,serum cortisol concentration in ZD ones was significantly increased,whereas serum ACTH concentration and cerebrum NOS activity were significantly decreased.The results suggested that zinc might influence the metabolism of hypothalamic hypophysial adrenocortical axis and NOS. 展开更多

Population Bursts of Parvalbumin-Positive Interneurons Inhibit Spiking Pyramidal Cells in Spontaneously Active Cortical in Vitro Networks

Author present the interplay between different neuron types in the spontaneous electrical activity of low density cortical in vitro networks grown on MEA (multielectrode arrays) of glass neurochips. In 10% of the networks, the continuously spiking activity of some neurons was inhibited by synchronous bursts or superbursts of the majority of the other neurons. Immunohistochemical staining subsequent to MEA recordings suggest that the synchronously bursting neurons are parvalbumin-positive interneurons with abundant axonal ramifications. Blocking chemical synaptic transmission by Ca2+-free medium revealed that the curbed spiking neurons are intrinsically active. It is assumed that these neurons are pyramidal cells which may be inhibited by groups of synchronously bursting interneurons. It is propose that the observed burst-induced inhibition is an important principle in the temporal organization of neuronal activity as well as in the restriction of excitation, and thus essential for information processing in the cerebral cortex. 展开更多

The effect of Batroxobin on expression of c-Jun in left temporal ischemic rats with spatial memory disorder was investigated by means of Morri's water maze and immunohistochemistry methods. The results showed that the mean reaction time and distance of temporal ischemic rats for searching a goal were significantly longer than those of sham-operated rats, and at the same time c-Jun expression of left temporal ischemic region was significantly increased. However, the mean reaction time and distance of Batroxobin-treated rats were shorter and they used normal strategies more often and earlier than those of ischemic rats. The number of c-Jun immune reactive cells of Batroxobin-treated rats was also less than that of ischemic group. In conclusion, Batroxobin can improve spatial memory disorder in temporal ischemic rats, and the down-regulation of the expression of c-Jun is probably related to the neuroprotective mechanism. 展开更多

Pairwise interactions in gene expression determine a hierarchical transcriptional profile in the human brain

The orchestrated expression of thousands of genes gives rise to the complexity of the human brain.However,the structures governing these myriad gene-gene interactions remain unclear.By analyzing transcription data from more than 2000 sites in six human brains,we found that pairwise interactions between genes,without considering any higher-order interactions,are sufficient to predict the transcriptional pattern of the genome for individual brain regions and the transcriptional profile of the entire brain consisting of more than 200 areas.These findings suggest a quadratic complexity of transcriptional patterns in the human brain,which is much simpler than expected.In addition,using a pairwise interaction model,we revealed that the strength of gene-gene interactions in the human brain gives rise to the nearly maximal number of transcriptional clusters,which may account for the functional and structural richness of the brain. 展开更多
