Stroke is a devastating complication...Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVR) has emerged as an alternative, rapidly evolving treatment option for patients with se- vere aortic stenosis and high surgical risk. Stroke is a devastating complication being confined mainly in the periprocedural and 30-day pe- riod following TAVR, with a lower and relatively constant frequency thereafter. Early stroke is mainly due to debris embolization during the procedure, whereas later events are associated with patient specific factors. Despite the fact that the rate of clinical stroke has been constantly decreasing compared to initial TAVR experience, modern neuro-imaging with MRI suggests that new ischemic lesions post-TAVR are almost universal. The impact of the latter is largely unknown. However, they seem to correlate with a reduction in neurocognitive function. Because TAVR is set to expand its indication to lower surgical-risk patients, stroke prophylaxis during and after TAVR becomes of paramount importance. Based on clinical and pathophysiological evidence, three lines of research are actively employed towards this direction: improvement in valve and delivery system technology with an aim to reduce manipulations and contact with the calcified aortic arch and native valve, antithrombotic therapy, and embolic protection devices. Careful patient selection, design of the procedure, and tailored antithrombotic strategies respecting the bleeding risks of this fragile population constitute the main defense against stroke following TAVR.展开更多

On one hand, the philosophical stance towards language, and on the other hand, the strong separation between science and philosophy are the distinctive features of the Italian thought. In particular, philosophy of language shows a fragmented framework in which current researches are an example for future studies on language and human nature. The basic idea behind the Philosophy of Language in Italy is that language has a biological and social nature. The aim of this paper is to give an account of the range of "bio" through a dialogue between philosophy and neuroscience. I will review the Italian research on mirror neurons with particular attention to the developments in embodied simulation proposed by Vittorio Gallese. I will underline the philosophical aspects of this neuroscientific theory, providing some remarks on intersubjectivity, intentions, and language. Finally, I will suggest future joint studies in neuroscience and the philosophy of language.展开更多

The Canadian War Museum's recent web page described Jack's standing officer in The Second Battle of Ypres 22 April to 25 May 1915 as one who "exemplifies the courage and resolve of the inexperienced Canadians in their first major battle". This comment showed a marked contrast to the contemporary art critic Richard Cork who described the first of the Canadian war memorials paintings as "a clich6-ridden bandaged officer ... shamelessly catering to public sentiment". Given these disparate positions, the author attempts to explain the gulf between these points of view and subsequently make the case that art has a broad application that might make us cautious of viewing a given work without due consideration of the context of its making and future merits.展开更多

This case draws attention to the severity of the pathology and maternal symptoms prior to gestation, and how an adequate clinical management of both obstetrics and cardiology can provide a favorable outcome for mother and fetus.展开更多

Camillo Camilli (ca. 1560-1615--his exact birth date is unknown) was an Italian poet of the sixteenth-century. His family came from Monte San Savino, Siena, and records mention that he died on July 13, 1615, in Ragusa. While personal documentation on Camilli's life is scarce there are substantial sources about his literary career as a translator, compiler and poet. Camilli wrote extensively. There are the five canti on Erminia e Tancredi which were collated with Tarquo Tasso's (1544-1595) unfinished poems, and his commentaries for Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando Furioso in 1584 and for Tasso's Gerusalemme Liberata in 1585. Under the influence of Tasso's writings and his involvement in the commentary of Gerusalemme Liberata (1585), Camilli started formulating his concetto (conceit) of what an impresa is (badge, device or insignia). The focus of this essay is on Camilli's Imprese for the Academies. The whole collection of the lmprese consists of three volumes. The frontispiece to each volume depicts three different stage settings filled with classical ornamentation and bearing in the center of the lintel the impresa or insignia of Francesco Ziletti's printing company--a starfish surrounded by stars and bound by a ribbon. Camilli selected this image to announce through the imprese the significance of these famous men (uominifamosi) of the academy, granting them immortality and honor for their cultural and intellectual accomplishments.展开更多

The study is organized as follows. After reviewing the relevant literature on financial disclosure and MC, this paper examines the content of the Italian management's report-----known as "Relazione sulla Gestione" and that of the recent IASB's IFRS practice statement. Hence, it applies a self-constructed disclosure index and a multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) on MC of a sample of 66 Italian non-financial listed firms. The results show that the level of disclosures provided by the Italian listed firms does not seem to be affected by the IASB's guidelines. However, the survey highlights large differences in the level and type of disclosure provided in MC among the sectors and firms. This paper aims to contribute to the financial reporting debate by understanding the IASB's guidelines and their impacts on the voluntary disclosure practices of Italian listed firms.展开更多

To restrict rice uptake of As in these soils, approaches to reduce As input and bioavailability must be considered. One approach to reduce As input into rice soils or uptake by rice is cultivating rice under aerobic, intermittent flooding, or alternate wetting and drying (AWD) conditions, rather than in submerged soils, or use of irrigation water low in As. For reducing As bioavailability in soil, aerobic or AWD rice culture and application of biochar, sulfur (S), and/or rice polish to soil are promising. Moreover, use of As-hyperaecumulating plant species (e.g., Pteris vittata L.) in rotation or combinations with favourable plant species (e.g., Azolla, Chlorella, or Nannochloropsis species) can also be promoted, in addition to using rice cultivars that are tolerant to As. Though applications of high doses of phosphorus (P), iron (Fe), and silicon (Si) fertilizers have shown promise in many instances, these methods have to be practiced carefully, because negative effects have also been reported, although such incidents are rare. Major factors affecting As speciation and bioavailability in soil are chemical properties such as redox status, pH, and Fe, P, Si, and S concentrations, physical properties such as texture and organic matter, and biological properties such as methylation activity by soil microorganisms. However, as many of these factors interact, long-term examination under field conditions is needed before measures are recommended for and implemented in farmers' fields.展开更多

In recent years, we have strived to extend SPT to fluids confined in a variety of random porous matrices. In this article, we present a timely review of these developments. We have endeavored to present a formulation that is pedagogically more accessible than those presented in various original papers, and we hope this benefits newcomers in their research work. We also use more consistent notations for different cases. In addition, we discuss issues that have been scarcely considered in the literature, e.g., the one-fluid structure of SPT due to the isomorphism between the equation of state for a multicomponent fluid and that for a one-component fluid or the pure-confinement scaling relation that provides a connection between a confined and a bulk fluid.展开更多
