As the reverse of language acquisition, language attrition refers to the loss of language ability resulting from little or no use of certain languages over a period of time. Among the three factors of language, vocabulary tends to be more vulnerable to attrition compared with syntax and phoneme. Therefore, a study based on vocabulary attrition is of greater importance. By reviewing the literatures on language attrition and outlining the influencing factors of language attrition, the paper tends to figure out the corresponding strategies which are effective in college English vocabulary teaching.

Vocabulary is a fundamental element of a language. It undertakes the task of conveying semantic meanings. And it guarantees the implement of language communication. Authenticity and College Oral English Teaching

This paper aims to explore how to bring authenticity into oral English class. By discussing a number of conversational features which are prominent in every day interaction, but are lacking in the standard English material our students are learning every day, we suggest that everyday conversation is different from standard written English, so taking standard written English as a model in our oral English class is not feasible. We believe that applying CL （corpus linguistics） and CA （conversation analysis） into oral English classroom to design the learning material and classroom tasks is a good way to enhance the authenticity of language learning.

Lexical approach to college English teaching

This paper discusses the lexical approach in college English teaching and learning. The lexical approach can help students learn to use English in an idiomatic way rather than in a Chinese way which may cause misunderstanding or confusion of native English speakers. As for the college English Teaching in China, the lexical approach works better than the traditional word-based teaching and learning. It can help students to learn ＂real＂ or ＂authentic＂ English and improve the students＇ ability to use English in all-around way.

Exploring Task-Based Approach to Teaching Oral Communication Skills in English to Sri Lankan Undergraduate Students

It is vital that Sri Lankan undergraduate students learn to speak competently because they need to become capable communicators in order to accomplish a wide range of goals and to become useful members of their communities. However, teaching oral communication skills to English language learners has always been a challenge for the language teacher. As a result, teachers have often attempted to look for new methods that would enable students’ learning process by creating a difference in the English as a second language （ESL） learning-teaching classroom. This paper describes the applications of the task-based language teaching （TBLT） methodology in which communicative tasks engage a group of undergraduates in authentic conversation in order to teach oral communication skills in an academic setting. The Sri Lankan ESL learning-teaching context was chosen as the research context for this study and comprised a sample of randomly selected 60 2nd-year undergraduates whose proficiency in English was at elementary level. This utilized both qualitative and quantitative measurements and followed the model, presented by Willis （1996）, which includes three stages： pre-task stage, task-cycle and language focus for TBLT in the ESL learning-teaching classroom. Students were required to work in groups and the task-cycles involved a questionnaire survey game in which they were required to construct “Wh” questions in order to elicit information from others. The findings report that this approach has inspired students better in learning oral communication skills unlike many conventional teaching methods which promote a form-focused theory. They tried to experiment with what they knew without fear of being corrected by the teacher when an error was made, got feedback from their peers and formulated ＆ reformulated their ideas with a sense of accuracy and fluency. The researcher recommends that ESL teaching practitioners use TBLT methodology in their classroom, since this enhances learners’ accuracy and fluency. Furthermore, language teachers can spend more time in reflection which will allow them to think critically on their classroom behaviour. They can identify and work on their weaknesses in the classroom as well as building on their strengths.

On the Politeness in College English Teachers＇ Classroom Talk

Teachers＇ talk is an important aspect for conducting college English class effectively. It plays crucial roles in giving instructions, organizing classroom norm, and facilitating students＇ language acquisition. Based on Leech＇s Politeness Principle, this paper has analyzed the politeness in teachers＇ classroom talk and explored the functions it possesses as well. The study shows that the politeness feature of college English teachers＇ classroom talk is the consequences of observing each maxim of the Politeness Principle and is of the functions such as making effective cornmnication, keeping friendly relations with students, saving students＇ face, etc.. Conducting research on politeness in teachers＇ talk is conducive to understanding the process of language teaching and learning.

Through the foreign language education, interculturality and multicultural civilization are enhanced, qualities that the European citizens should have.

Foreign Language Learning at Tertiary Level in Mozambique

More than ever before, multilingualism is a key resource that opens the doors for participation in internationalisation and in the globalization process and participation in the knowledge society. As such, it is of outmost importance that governments consider language learning as an educational priority. Mozambique is no exception to this rule, as it has also already acknowledged the need not only to teach languages of wider communication such as English, French, and Portuguese, but also the Mozambican national languages. The present paper discusses the importance and value that is attached to multilingualism in Mozambique and focuses particularly on Foreign Language Teaching and Learning at tertiary level. This paper reports specifically on data collected through a questionnaire given to first year university students at Universidade Pedag6gica in Maputo, in June, 2008. In addition, it examines the university＇s language policy of providing English language teaching to first year students, focuses on some of the constraints that presently affect the development of productive and receptive multilingualism, and suggests ways of making foreign language learning more effective

An Empirical Analysis of Learning and Teaching English as a Second Language： The Chinese Perspective

This research venture investigates the trends and motives behind the English learning as a second language. The author has used the Chinese binoculars to probe into the phenomenon of English learning and teaching. English language has become an international tool of communication and business. Professional and students at China's Mainland have been learning English since long but this trend has been increased in the recent years due to the wave of globalization and also owing to the enormous emerging economy of China. Internationalization of education and the quest of knowing the culture and civilizations have spurred the need for English learning. The authors have performed a questionnaire based research with the sample of 130 university students learning Chinese at different English learning institutes at Xi＇an, Shanxi, China. The analysis of the findings in this research highlights the reasons behind the growing trends of English learning and also describes the teaching methodology for effective language teaching in the Chinese perspective.

The Influence of the Learning Environment on Learner Autonomy： A Comparative Study of Polish and Yemeni EFL Undergraduate Learners

The goal of autonomous language learning is to create an atmosphere where learners take charge of their own learning. Creating this atmosphere encounters various challenges which are partially context-specific. Influenced by the learning environment, learnners of different educational contexts vary in their degree of autonomy. The present study examines the impact of the learning environment on learner autonomy at higher education. The study focuses on the differences between Polish and Yemeni EFL （English as a Foreign Language） learners with respect to their autonomy in language learning. A questionnaire was distributed to a total of 140 （59 Polish and 81 Yemeni） undergraduate learners. The questionnaire was coded into seven categories： beliefs and attitudes, planning, management, self-regulation, sources and materials, in-class responsibility, and out-of-class responsibility. Data were analysed quantitatively via SPSS （Statistical Product and Service Solutions）. Independent Sample t-Test is used to investigate the differences between Polish and Yemein learners and Pearson Correlation is used to perform correlational analysis among the seven categories. The results show significant differences between Polish and Yemeni learners in some of the categories as well as a significant correlation among other categories

The Effect of Using L1 （Arabic Language） in the L2 （English Language） Classroom on the Achievement in General English of Foundation Year Students in King Abdulaziz University

This study aims at investigating the effect of using L 1 （Arabic Language） while teaching a target language （English Language） on the achievement in General English of foundation year students in King Abdulaziz University. To achieve the purpose of the study, the researcher used an experimental design： an experimental group and a control group. The independent variable is using L1 while teaching English in very limited and specified areas. The dependent variable is students＇ achievement in general English. The statistics used is the t-test. The population of the study was all students enrolled in the foundation year 1431/1432 in the ELI （English Language Institute） at King Abdulaziz University. The sample of the study consisted of 50 students taking North Star in the sections A and B as a university requirement in the foundation year 1431/1432 in King Abdulaziz University. The results of the study were in favor of banning Arabic in the English language classroom as shown in the mean scores of the control and experimental groups in the tables. It is recommended that teachers and instructors should be trained to use teaching strategies that help them use English only in the English language classroom.

The Influence of English Movies on English Listening Teaching in College

Listening, in language teaching, is a skill that requires active engagement. To help their students become effective listeners becomes one of the great challenging tasks for the language teachers. In the Chinese contexts, this challenge is greater for college English teachers, for listening skills, an important part of communication skills, have not been given as much attention as reading or writing skills in teaching non-English majors, especially a decade ago. This paper introduces English movies on English listening teaching in college, and puts forward some application strategies of English movies in English listening teaching.

Construction and Optimization of English Linguistic System in the Context of Multi-dimensional Perspective and Interactive Teaching
