Men saw FGM/C as the key to ensuring women's sexual morality, and considered FGM/C as the key to controlling sexual relationships. Men were reported to increasingly take part in the decision-making about daughters' FGM/C. In men's view, FGM/C reduces female sex drive and thereby keeps girls chaste before marriage and women faithful during marriage. Men wholeheartedly support FGM/C for these reasons. However, others are ambivalent due to a concern that the practice might have negative consequences on their own sexuality as a consequence of a negative effect on their wives' sexual feelings. The study concludes that men's role is important and that they should be involved in community activities against the practice. It also concludes that without comprehensive sexuality education, men will continue to hold on to the misconceptions that FGM/C has a positive effect on women's sexual morality through reducing their sexual desire.展开更多

By employing the fairy tale Cinderella as an archetype, Gloria Whelan successfully blends fantasy with realism, building an image of new Cinderella, who is independent, courageous, and full of rebelling spirits in a patriarchal society, thus presenting young readers a more familiar and more acceptable access to the harsh reality. With the theme of female initiation, Koly's initiation journey is allegorical which needs to be read as an extended metaphor to exhibit the power of courage and hope in people who determine to take the fate in their own hands.展开更多

Lawrence created “inferior Don Quixotes” to refer those lost men, which can be further divided into “hen-sure man” and egoist. This study is on design guidelines for the living space with robots and can be applied to the architectural planning and focused on the basic environmental primary factor. The key terms were space, people-adult male and female, positions, and the robot-size, speed-settings and approaching angles. This research is the distances a small mobile robot moves to an adult male compared with that toward an adult female. The authors focus on a small mobile robot and identify the distances from which the robot can approach individuals, and also clarify how the distances to individuals change as the robot's speed and angle of approach varies. The study did this experiment to analyze 30 patterns per person and also when at an angle of the difference of male and female, two position standing/seated and three speed-settings0.08 m/sec, 0.24 m/sec and 0.48 m/sec and five directions--0°, 45°, 90°, 135° and 180°.展开更多

(1989) and My Antonia (1994) authored by Willa Cather, a famous American local color female writer. The purpose of the paper is to analyze the protagonists' struggle through social restrictions in 0 pioneers? and My Antonia, so as to analyze the situation pioneer women faced in American mid-west at that age. Women as cultural conservators and transmitters of civilization play integral parts in this respect. It is true that the morality system is set by the patriarchal society and restricts women's behavior. However, we must admit that when women stop functioning as civilization transmitters and cultural conservators, the world will go wrong seriously. In the two novels, hearty, generous women always create a nurturing and gracious atmosphere in their household. Practically, these women transmit the old civilization to the newly established homestead successfully展开更多

Late lead perforation is a rare complication without a standard treatment. Case summary: We report a case of a 98-year old woman submitted to pacemaker implantation due to symptomatic second-degree atrio-ventricular block. After two days she returned to the hospital with thoracic pain and was diagnosed with RV (right ventricular) lead perforation. She was submitted to cardiac surgery with lead extraction and RV repair. Discussion: There are two major types of complications after pacemaker implantation, mechanical and infection. Reported perforation rates after pacemaker implantation range from 0.1%-0.8%. While acute lead perforation is very well described, late lead perforation is only described in case reports with a low rate of tamponade or death. Management of subacute or delayed RV lead perforation is not well defined due to very limited data. Question remains on whether to extract the lead or not.展开更多

Female ornaments are common and their function well documented in many species, whether sex role reversed or not. However, sexually selected female weapons seem totally absent except for small wing spurs in three jacana species, present in both males and females. This poor female weaponry is in sharp contrast to the situation in species with conventional sex roles: males com- monly have evolved sexually selected weapons as well as ornaments. At the same time, females in many taxa have naturally se- lected weapons, used in competition over resources or in predator defence. Why are sexually selected weapons then so rare, al- most absent, in females? Here I briefly review weaponry in females and the function of these weapons, conclude that the near ab- sence of sexually selected weapons begs an explanation, and suggest that costs of sexually selected weapons may exceed costs of ornaments. Females are more constrained when evolving sexually selected traits compared to males, at least compared to those males that do not provide direct benefits, as trait costs reduce a female's fecundity. I suggest that this constraining trade-off between trait and fecundity restricts females to evolve ornaments but rarely weapons. The same may apply to paternally investing males. Whether sexually selected weapons actually are more costly than sexually selected ornaments remains to be investigated展开更多

Ten sessions of classic massage of the lower limbs were performed on the subjects. The massage sessions were conducted every day over ten consecutive days. Throughout the treatment, the subjects' blood pressure was measured using a manometer with a stethoscope TRO-CARDIO KIT 2 MONO. Their blood pressure was taken 1 min before the massage, as well as 1 min and5 min after each session. The study took place between March and June 2013 in Szpital Specjalistyczny im. J?drzeja ?niadeckiego(J?drzej ?niadecki Specialist Hospital) in Nowy S?cz, at the Department of Internal Diseases.RESULTS: For ten consecutive days, the blood pressure values in the examined women were decreasing, with the exception of the diastolic blood pressure measured 5 min after the massage.CONCLUSION: The drops in blood pressure by several percent, noted in the majority of the female subjects over the time of the study. Classic massage might provide a safe supportive measure in pharmacologic treatment of hypertension.展开更多

(Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), were investigated. Upon encounter, a male approached a female, mounted her, grasped her terminal abdomen with his hind tarsi, and attempted to mate. Successful mating lasted about 3.5 h. Although all traits measured in females and half of traits in males were significantly correlated with mating success, the primary selection on virgin females was the genital trait, thebursa copulatrix length, and that on males was the body length and hind tarsal length. Longer bursa copulatrix accommodated a larger ejaculate, suggesting that this female trait benefits the male that first mates with the female in terms of in- creasing ejaculate size to beat subsequent males in sperm competition. Under a female-biased sex ratio, more than 20% of mat- ings failed within 20s after the male genitalia had been inserted into hers, suggesting that males assess genital features of the re- :male before insemination and undertake cryptic male mate choice. Larger males were more capable of grasping females and achieving mating. During the premating struggle the male almost always used his hind tarsi to lift the female terminal abdomen to the position for his genitalia to insert, and as a result, males with longer hind tarsi achieved higher mating success [Current Zoolo- gy 59 (2): 257-264, 2013].展开更多
