George Eliot(1819-1880), is one of the most highly praised novelists in the literary world in the 19th century because of her unique position in English literature. She wrote a large quantity of works of the highest merit and of far-reaching influence. Her attitude towards feminism has aroused wide attention and has been discussed hotly among feminist critics in different countries. The Mill on the Floss, which first appeared in1860, is regarded as the most excellent autobiographical novel of Eliot. The ideology of male power in the patriarchal society during the Victorian Era is internalized in people's heart, which brings huge influence on Maggie's female mental state. This paper aims to discuss the causes of Maggie's feminist thoughts and manifestation of her feminism, thus, the influence upon women in her times. The paper concludes that Eliot was a great female author full of pioneering feminist thought from the example given by Maggie in The Mill on the Floss. 展开更多

Willa Cather was the first woman frontier writer in American literary history who devoted herself to the portrayal of frontier life of pioneers in the Middle West America. She has successfully created a series of moving women images. Most of Cather's female images are strong-minded and independent, attempting to take the fate into their own hands. In a sense, she can be regarded as a precursor of modern feminism. 0 Pioneers is the first mature book of Willa Cather, with the heroic protagonist, Alexandra, the representative of such women characters. With the application of the feminist literary approach, the thesis makes a detailed analysis of the heroine Alexandra in an attempt to illustrate and prove Cather's feminist thinking tendency. The present paper aims to analyze the feminist thoughts of Alexandra from the perspectives of her Revolt against "Woman Myth", her struggle against patriarchal society, and her longing for a real equality between men and women. 展开更多

Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923), a New Zealand's celebrated short story writer, was famous for her exquisite portrayals of women and she made great contribution to the British short story as well. Greatly influenced by Anton Chekhov, her writing fmnly fixed on the small details of human behavior. She created her best works in the early 1920s, and her book, The Garden Party, arrived at the peak of great achievement. Set in England, her short story, Mr. and Mrs. Dove, described a story about the man's last day in England and a series of things that happened to his visit to his beloved woman's home which presented the relationships between his mom and him, and his beloved woman and him. This paper mainly explores the feminist thoughts of the female characters. The paper concludes that the awakening awareness of women in this story was obviously from the perspectives of striking against the patriarchal system and Mansfield was actually a feminist pioneer who promoted the development of feminism in the whole world. 展开更多

An inquiry into the ontology of critical gender consciousness in Africa Philosophy is long overdue. Hitherto discourses on gender problems lost focus because of the tendency to leave out the gaps in culture created by colonial experience, modernity's assaults and unAfricaness in ontology and essence. It is argued here that the fulcrum for a legitimate feminist doctrine is Theistic Humanism, the philosophy of African philosophy that exposes the epistemological and metaphysical basis of the rightful and ethical place of women in the society without injury, injustice and abuse on womanhood. Theistic Humanism as an ontology and cosmology abhors class struggle among husbands, wives, sons, daughters, etc.. Class struggle between men and women degenerated from the oneness of being ontology and Gender community where husbands and wives were happily married with different complementary social roles for the preservation of society. 展开更多

Elaine Showalter's A Literature of Their Own: British Women Novelists From Bront~ to Lessing is a pioneering masterpiece in feminism studies. The book impresses the reader with Showalter's groundwork to revive the interest in long-forgotten women writers in British literature history. Showalter's work is indeed a kind of rediscovery, mapping widely rather than mining deeply the territory of women's writing. In a sense, feminist criticism came of age with this book. 展开更多

This paper aims to scrutinize the roles of Rochester through the feminist perspective. Revolving around the course of Rochester's psychological development by the way of conformity-disorientation-rebellion, this thesis consists of three parts. Part one focuses on the analysis of Rochester's compliance with the patriarchal norms, acting as a defender for the patriarchy to impose great oppression on women. Part two delves into Rochester's psychological fluctuation around disorientation, perplexity, and struggle when he is frustrated with the unhappy marriage. Part three is devoted to the elaboration on Rochester's resolute revolt against the unconscionable patriarchal norms in the pursuit of his happiness. This paper concludes that Rochester is a character of rebellious consciousness and spirit which forms the driving force in the transformation of his role from a defender of the Victorian patriarchal norms at the beginning of the story to a resolute rebel against the harsh rules at the end. As a member of the patriarchal dominators, Rochester's resolute rebellion against patriarchal rules further reveals and strongly criticizes the unreasonable, unequal, and inhuman nature of the patriarchy 展开更多

Adichie's Purple Hibiscus is a feminist work that challenges the dehumanizing tendencies of the menfolk as evident in the character of Mama (Beatrice Achike) who eventually exposed the African conception of an ideal woman who keeps dumb even in the face of humiliation, victimization, and brutality so as to be perceived as a good woman. We will make a resounding case to portray that Achike belongs to the category of liberal feminism. However, as events unfolds, she was forced by situations beyond her control to respond and go radical in order to crush anything that stands in her way to happiness. Efforts will be made to show how African women are rated based on the real and good women as represented by Ifeoma and Beatrice Achike respectively. This essay in exploring the different tenets of feminism will acknowledge that radical feminism is an off shoot of violence. We shall argue that radical feminism is a radical reaction to dehumanization, humiliation, and violence. This study seeks to address the issue of feminism and how characters subject to series of humiliation that leads to a radical approach to gain their freedom. 展开更多

In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald depicts the conflicts and contradictions between men and women about society, family, love, and money, literally mirroring the patriarchal society constantly challenged by feminism in the 1920s of America. This paper intends to compare the features of masculinism and feminism in three aspects: gender, society, and morality. Different identifications of gender role between men and women lead to female protests against male superiority and pursuits of individual liberation. Meanwhile, male unshaken egotism and gradually expanded individualism of women enable them both in lack of sound moral standards. But compared with the female, male moral pride drives them with much more proper moral judge, which reflects Fitzgerald's support of the masculine society. Probing into the confrontation between masculinism and feminism, it is beneficial for further study on how to achieve equal coexistence and harmony between men and women. 展开更多

Ancient Greece having survived uninterruptedly through centuries, consists an incontestably cultural capital of overriding importance for the global community and especially for Greece itself. Mythical elements usually become frameworks or structures, in which Greek literary tradition encodes Greek national virtues and promotes nationalistic goals. On the other hand, myth's adaptations to different chrono-topes generate diversified cultural reception, adjusted to the era and the audience's expectations. The mythical figures are constantly invested in different conceptual schemata, which correspond to the altered way of thinking. Myth is also usually embedded in or underlies fantasy genre, which becomes a vehicle for utterances on women's rights. In this paper, we are going to examine closely three "fantasy" novels for children with mythical intertextual elements: The Fortunate lsles (1989), Torch (1987), and Sirena (1998), whose plot takes place in Greece and we will try to explore: (1) how is Greekness being perceived and presented; and (2) how is female identity being introjected or depicted, in order to find out if the subversive potential of the fantasy genre reworks and rationalizes femininity and Greekness, which have for so long been exploited by the patriarchal or nationalistic status quo. 展开更多

Woman is still the other of this Church-State totalism, outside. The event is extremely small but the symbolism enormous of an intrinsic lack and its insane compensations. Philosopher Zi^ek sees the significance of what Pussy Riot represent for contemporary global capitalism, represented by the American dollar and Wall Street. Performer Madonna sees the difference between America, where she has been able to express herself and says that anyone can, and other parts of the world, namely Russia, where this is not possible. The Hindu nationalism with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as its vanguard, in the recent times, has emerged as dominant creed in the contem- porary politico-cultural scenario of India. No walk of society, associated polity as well as their fragments has remained untouched with the nationalist mooring of Hindutva philosophy. This all encompassing and homogenizing doctrine besides other aspects of national life has inadvertently embraced and co-opted the Hindu woman in her different avatars. The gender connotation that is usually ascribed to the nation has unerringly given rise to a situation wherein the women have been consciously intertwined with the nationalist discourse. This phenomenon of co- option by the way of women affiliates of the RSS climaxed particularly during the Ramjanmabhoomi movement in the early 1990s besides at different communal conflagrations. Therefore, the honour of the nation (Hindu Nation) and the honour of the Hindu women is closely linked each other in the Hindu nationalists' worldview. Hence, within the strong patriarchal system that Hindutva seems to espouse, the women represents both as a flag bearer of family honour (and of the nation) as well as matrishakti, i.e. victim and viotot same time. This construct of women is highly questioned by the feminists who look at the right-wing tendencies as obscurantist, regressive and totally anti-feminist. This paper deals with the dual imagery that woman seemingly appropriate in the Hindu nationalism espoused by the Sangh Parivar as well as the feminists' perspectives on such appropriation. 展开更多
