Contemporary Hollywood films seem at first glance to be opposed to capital punishment. However, this article's consideration of five surprisingly similar films (Dead Man Walking, The Chamber, Last Dance, True Crime, and The Life of David Gale) finds that they do not truly and consistently condemn capital punishment. Instead of suggesting that the practice of capital punishment is fundamentally immoral and should in general be ended, the films champion only worthy individuals on death row and delight primarily in the personal growth of other characters who attempt to aid the condemned. In the end, Hollywood offers only a muted message regarding the on-going use of capital punishment. 展开更多

Speculative-fiction stories, in print, often depict families being wrenched apart by overwhelming new forces to which the children are better able to adapt then older generations. In making speculative-fiction movies, however, Hollywood typically offers a more hopeful, comforting image of a family, at the beginning somewhat less than perfect, being restored as a result of those same forces. This paper concentrates on The Spiderwick Chronicles (2003-2004) by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black, Susan Cooper's novel The Dark is Rising (1973), and Lewis Padgett's story "Mimsy were the Borogoves" and the recent movies based (more or less loosely) thereon, Mark Waters' The Spiderwick Chronicles (2007), David Cunningham's The Seeker (2007), and Bob Shaye's The Last Mimzy (2007), showing how the differences between the movies and the print-stories they are based on reflect an attempt on the part of the movie-makers to reaffirm and reinforce the family bonds that are to some extent sundered in the original stories 展开更多

Why Hollywood Hates Business: Immanuel Kant's Role in Avatar." Movie Reviewed by Adam Smith

James Cameron's Avatar turns the tables on that premise. Humans attack a peaceful, less technologically sophisticated race in order to exploit their natural resources. Driving the assault is a mining company hell-bent on improving its bottom line. The villain of Avatar is not a person, but those people who seek profit. To put it starkly, business is evil. But why has the entertainment business cast business as a heavy? Hollywood has now made Immanuel Kant as the director of moral sentiment. Not, of course, directly, but rather the ghostwriter of Hollywood's ideas about morality. The works of Kant are not discussed or debated in the public arena, but their principles have influenced the way people think about what is just and good. The ideas of Kant have filtered into the contemporary discourse and are one of the key ingredients in the national dialogue over what it means to be moral. The categorical imperative holds that an action is moral only if it is free from calculation of reward or gain. To be truly, moral people must abandon all practical considerations of need or desire; they must be directed by pure good will alone. Business people can never measure up to Kant's standard. They always make choices based on cost and benefit. Their businesses would quickly go bankrupt, if they made decisions on good will rather than interest. Kant's principles have raised the moral standard so high that even the common inclination to seek one's own benefit is looked on with some mistrust. In Kantian-influenced movies, business people have come to play the evil antagonist; they seek gain instead of the good. How would Adam Smith, the father of economic rationality, respond to popularized Kantian morality? 展开更多

The concept of "Independent film" comes from the middle of last century's in Hollywood. Hollywood at that time, because of the monopolization of the so-called "eight movie companies", the shooting and operation of a film followed rigorous steps of "producer system." The target of the "producer system" entirely aimed at the market in order to get the maximum profits; therefore, although this system brought a lot of money to the film industry, it also limited the filmmakers' play space. Thus, a group of filmmakers got rid of the eight movie companies' control and made self-financing, or even wrote and direct red by themselves, they shot a lot of strong ideological films which were different with commercial films, known as the" Independent Film ". 展开更多
