Empirical-Statistical Models Based on Remote Sensing for Estimating the Volume of Landslides Induced by the Wenchuan Earthquake 被引量:7

The Wenchuan Ms 8.0 earthquake on May 12, 2008 induced a huge number of landslides. The distribution and volume of the landslides are very important for assessing risks and understanding the landslide - debris flow - barrier lake - bursts flood disaster chain. The number and the area of landslides in a wide region can be easily obtained by remote sensing technique, while the volume is relatively difficult to obtain because it requires some detailed geometric information of slope failure surface and sub-surface. Different empirical models for estimating landslide volume were discussed based on the data of 107 landslides in the earthquake-stricken area. The volume data of these landslides were collected by field survey. Their areas were obtained by interpreting remote sensing images while their apparent friction coefficients and height were extracted from the images unifying DEM (digital elevation model). By analyzing the relationships between the volume and the area, apparent friction coefficients, and the height, two models were established, one for the adaptation of a magnitude scale landslide events in a wide range of region, another for the adaptation in a small scope. The correlation coefficients (R2) are 0.7977 and 0.8913, respectively. The results estimated by the two models agree well with the measurement data. 展开更多

In this article, a theoretical model for predicting the equilibrium morphology of gas–liquid Janus droplets was built. Based on this model, the effects of bubble radius and volume ratio on morphology change was systematically studied. The increase of bubble radius causes the two parts(bubble and oil drop) in Janus droplets tend to merge while the impact of volume ratio is complicated. When volume ratio increases, these two parts firstly tend to merge, then gradually separate. The accuracy of this model was verified by experimental results. 展开更多

CFD-Based Numerical Simulation of Water Film Flash Evaporation with a New Flash Evaporation Model

In this study, a new mass model involving superheat, initial temperature, liquid height, evaporator diameter, and flashing time is established to describe the flash evaporation process of water film. Of 469 sets of flash experimental data from three previous researches, 305 sets were applied to optimize parameters, and the other 164 sets were used to verify the practicability of the model. The results showed that the mean relative error between the literature data and the model values was less than 16.3%, and the model statistics proved that the model was well-posed. Then, the kinetic model was obtained using the time derivative of the new mass model. Computational fluid dynamics simulation of water film flash evaporation was studied based on a user-defined function program of the new evaporation kinetic model. The new kinetic model shows more consistency with the experimental phenomena in terms of evaporated mass and temperature compared with the evaporation–condensation model in Fluent software and Gopalakrishna's model. This new kinetic model can be extended to describe the flash process of water solution under other conditions. 展开更多

A modified Rushton impeller with two circular covering-plates mounted on the upper and lower sides of the blades was designed.There are gaps between the plates and the blades.The turbulent hydrodynamics was analyzed by the computational fluid dynamics(CFD) method.Firstly,the reliability of the numerical model and simulation method was verified by comparing with the experimental results from literature.Subsequently,the power consumption,flow pattern,mean velocity and mixing time of the covering-plate Rushton impeller(RT-C) were studied and compared with the standard Rushton impeller(RT) operated under the same conditions.Results show that the power consumption can be decreased about 18%.Compared with the almost unchanged flow field in the lower stirred tank,the mean velocity was increased at the upper half of the stirred tank.And in the impeller region,the mean axial and radial velocities were increased,the mean tangential velocity was decreased.In addition,the average mixing time of RT-C was shortened about 4.14% than the counterpart of RT.The conclusions obtained here indicated that RT-C has a more effective mixing performance and it can be used as an alternative of RT in the process industries. 展开更多

Based on finite volume method, the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of one smooth tube and ten different axisymmetric corrugated tubes, including two with uniform corrugation and eight with non-uniform corrugation, have been studied. A physical model of the corrugated tube was built, then the numerical simulation of the model was carried out and the numerical simulation results were compared with the empirical formula.The results show that: the friction factor decreases with the increase of Reynolds number ranging from 6000 to 57000, the value of which in the corrugated tubes with non-uniform corrugation(tube 03–10) are smaller than those with uniform corrugation(tube 01–02). The geometry parameters of tube(01) have advantages on the heat transfer enhancement in low Reynolds number flow region(from 6000 to 13000) and tube(07–08)have advantages on the heat transfer enhancement in high Reynolds number flow region(from 13000 to 57000). The vortex, existed in each area between two adjacent corrugations called second flow region, is the root of the enhancement on heat transfer in the corrugated tubes. The effectiveness factor decreases with the increasing of Reynolds number and the performances of the corrugated tubes with pitch of 12.5 mm have advantages than these of 10 mm under the same corrugation geometric parameter. 展开更多

This study aimed at investigating the causes of floods in Numan Town with particular reference to the 2012 floods. Three residential areas: Gangare, Gwadda Mallam and Green Village were selected for the study. Hydrological, SRTM (shuttle radar topography mission) digital elevation model, secondary and primary data were utilized. A total of 180 questionnaires were administered to the residents in equal proportion using systematic random sampling. ArcGIS 10.0 and Excel were used for the analysis. The study revealed that the major causes of flood in the area include discharge of water from the Lagdo dam in Cameroon and Kiri dam in Adamawa State. Others include heavy rainfall, topography, and lack of adherence to development control provisions which resulted in construction of residential areas on flood plains. Many of the residents do not have legal title to their plots and this constitutes a very serious constraint to provision of drainages and solid waste disposal services. To ameliorate the devastating effects of floods, the study recommends relocation of residents of flood prone areas, provision of solid waste management services, and construction of more drainages. In addition, the town planning authorities and community leaders should collaborate to ensure that houses are built in flood plains. 展开更多

A novel method for multi-image matching by synthesizing image and object-space information is proposed. Firstly, four levels of image pyramids are generated according to the rule that the next pyramid level is generated from the previous level using the average gray values of the 3 by 3 pixels, and the first level of pyramid image is generated from the original image. The initial horizontal parallaxes between the reference image and each searching image are calculated at the highest level of the image pyramid. Secondly, corresponding image points are searched in each stereo image pair from the third level of image pyramid, and the matching results in all stereo pairs are integrated in the object space, by which the mismatched image points can be eliminated and more accurate spatial information can be obtained for the subsequent pyramid image matching. The matching method based on correlation coefficient with geometric constraints and global relaxation matching is introduced in the process of image matching. Finally, the feasibility of the method proposed in this paper is verified by the experiments using a set of digital frame aerial images with big overlap. Compared with the traditional image matching method with two images, the accuracy of the digital surface model (DSM) generated using the proposed method shows that the multiimage matching method can eliminate the mismatched points effectively and can improve the matching success rate significantly. 展开更多

The Bingham fluid model has been successfully used in modeling a large class of non-Newtonian fluids. In this paper, the authors extend to the case of Bingham fluids the results previously obtained by Chipot and Mardare, who studied the asymptotics of the Stokes flow in a cylindrical domain that becomes unbounded in one direction, and prove the convergence of the solution to the Bingham problem in a finite periodic domain, to the solution of the Bingham problem in the infinite periodic domain, as the length of the finite domain goes to infinity. As a consequence of this convergence, the existence of a solution to a Bingham problem in the infinite periodic domain is obtained, and the uniqueness of the velocity field for this problem is also shown. Finally, they show that the error in approximating the velocity field in the infinite domain with the velocity in a periodic domain of length 2l has a polynomial decay in , unlike in the Stokes case (see [Chipot, M. and Mardare, S., Asymptotic behaviour of the Stokes problem in cylinders becoming unbounded in one direction, Journal de Mathgmatiques Pures et Appliqudes, 90(2), 2008, 133-159]) where it has an exponential decay. High performance force sensors often encounter the conflicting requirements of high resolution and large measurement range.To address this problem,this paper presents a conceptual design of a novel uniaxial force sensor with large range and dual-stage force resolutions which enables us to measure forces within a wide range with satisfied resolutions.The newly developed force sensor features an aluminum alloy body with a probe to transfer external forces into the sensing element.It employs an optical linear encoder to detect the displacement of the sensing body.This sensing scheme may immunize outside electromagnetic noises and therefore enhance the performance of the sensor thanks to its digital signal output.In this paper,an accurate,analytical model for calculating the static stiffness and dynamics of the system was developed by using pseudo-rigid-body-model(PRBM)methodology.To optimize the design,finite element simulations were conducted.After a prototype sensor was fabricated,preliminary characterization tests were carried out to verify the accuracy of the theoretical model and demonstrate the effectiveness of the design.The experiment results indicate that the structure of the new sensor is compact,and it has the ability to measure both micro range and macro range forces within one setup,meanwhile keeps very fine resolutions. 展开更多

Large Eddy Simulation of Swirling Jet in a Bluff-Body Burner

The large eddy simulation (LES) is applied to an unconfined swirling flow of an air surrounding a bluff-body having a central jet of air, and the complicated flowfield that involves the recirculation and vortex breakdown is investigated. The Smagorinsky model is used as the sub-grid scale model. The results of the present numerical simulation are compared with the experimental data of the mean and stochastic root mean square (RMS) variations of two velocity components. Although the inflow conditions are specified in a simple manner, the obtained numerical results are in reasonable agreement with the experiments, except for a part of RMS variation values near downstream of the bluff body. The present numerical calculations can successfully reproduce the two characteristics of the flow, i.e., an upstream recirculation zone established just downstream of the burner plane and the additional recirculation zone established at the more downstream location. 展开更多
