The mismatch of beliefs about learning English between Chinese university students and teachers

The present investigation aims to explore the existence of differences of beliefs about learning English held by Chinese non-English major university students and their teachers of English in the southwest of China. Two questionnaires were used to collect the data. Chi-square （Z2） tests were used to analyze the quantitative data from both students＇ and teachers＇ questionnaires. The results of the chi-square （Z2） tests revealed that 34 out of 44 （plus 2 additional） items of beliefs varied significantly between teachers and students.

Temporal and Narrative Features of Ian McEwan＇s and Joe Wright＇s Atonement

The paper deals with temporal and narrative properties of Ian McEwan＇s （2001） and Joe Wright＇s （2007） Atonement. In order to show continuity with his other works, four of McEwan＇s novels--The lnnocent （1990）, Amsterdam （1999）, Saturday （2006）, and On Chesil Beach （2008）, have been analyzed before elaborating the novel and film adaptation of Atonement （2007）. Apart from the narratological analysis, McEwan＇s layered works lend themselves to different kinds of readings, and the authors have used the theoretical notions of Immanuel Kant （1952） as well as concepts derived from the postmodem philosophical movement. The aim of the paper is to show how the chronotopical and intertextual nature of the literary original finds a worthy equivalent in the film version, proving the feasibility of a successful intermedial transfer of a complex narrative structure

How to lead foreign students into Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is becoming much more international and widely accepted. More and more foreign students come to China's Mainland to study this great yet mysterious discipline. However, the current teaching methods are far from satisfaction. This paper analyzes some existing problems and contradictions present in the teaching practices and suggests some measures for improvement.

Relative pronoun in the acquisition of English relative clauses by Chinese EFL learners

The paper focuses on the properties of relative pronouns in the acquisition of relative clause by Chinese EFL learners. Based on the NPAH （noun phrase accessibility hierarchy）, comparison and contrast of some aspects of English and Chinese relative pronoun, the paper conducts two experiments, and has proved the hypotheses that students＇ performance generally follows the hierarchy of NPAH and students do have problems with relative pronoun involving prepositions. Besides, some pedagogical implications for foreign language teaching are discussed.

Learner Autonomy in the National English Language Curricula for Chinese Universities 1978-2007:A Historical Analysis

This historical study investigates the concept of learner autonomy in the national English language curricula for Chinese universities.It seeks to understand the meaning of learner autonomy in China and the intentionality of promoting this concept through the curricula from 1978 to 2007.By adopting Quentin Skinner’s intentionalist approach to analyzing the history of ideas,this study conducted a systematic document analysis of three national curricula in relation to their linguistic and practical contexts constituted of 169 Chinese academic articles in total.The study revealed that learner autonomy mainly referred to students’motivation and ability to work hard on their own outside the classroom in the Chinese context.Importing this concept,however,caused ideological confusion and exacerbated the disempowerment of teachers within the dynamics of China’s English language education at the tertiary level.The study raises awareness for borrowing concepts across different cultural contexts and has implications for research,policymaking,teacher development,and pedagogical practice in second language education in China.

Implications of Reportage Texts in EFL Teaching

In this paper, the author discusses implications of original reportage texts in EFL teaching and learning from the perspectives of socio-linguistics and pragmatic competence. The author also discusses a proper approach for teaching medical postgraduate students, which is centered on students and based on research. This approach for teaching and leaning has been proved effective and students have improved in their socio-linguistic and pragmatic competences. This approach should have implications to EFL teachers who teach students of other specialties.

Construction and Implementation of Practice Teaching System of English Major in Local Normal Universities

English practice teaching has outstanding superiority over the extension and supplementation of English classroom teaching, and practice teaching is an indispensably important part of college English teaching. To students, cultivation of the ability of practice is vital, affecting students＇ employment and future. To universities, teaching quality has a direct impact on the development prospect of schools and decides the future of schools. Moreover, local normal universities also undertake a more important task to cultivate local high-quality talents teaching primary and junior high schools. These teaching talents undertake the great task of English teaching over primary and junior high school students, and thus the construction and implementation of practice teaching system of English major in normal universities are urgent.

English Language Corpora as a Secondary ELT Resource for Indian Learners

The author proposes here for utilizing ELC （English Language Corpora） as a secondary resource for developing ELT （English Language Teaching） materials for teaching English to Indian learners. We argue for using ELC as one of the most authentic representative collections of modem English language from where we extract necessary linguistic data, information, and examples to develop basic as well as additional resources of ELT, such as, text books, reference materials, syllabuses, grammar books, dictionaries, and terminology databases, etc., for Indian learners. Keeping the requirements of individual learners in mind we propose to customize materials to make these maximally useful within the broader scheme of CALT （Computer Assisted Language Teaching）. In our view, ELT resources developed from ELC are more useful for Indian learners, because ELC represents diversified varieties of usage of modem English in real situations, which Indian learners need to assimilate to be at par with others across the globe. Also ELC-based ELT resources are more interesting and beneficial to Indian learners, if instructors carefully utilize these resources keeping in mind the requirements of learners. If Indian ELT learners want to compete in global frame, then utilization of ELC-based ELT resources is the most useful solution, which we can ignore at the cost of our own peril.

Implementing Cooperative Learning in Intensive Reading Course for Chinese Learners of English

Studies on Cooperative Learning （CL） have demonstrated advantages and effectiveness of employing strategies of CL on English as a Second Language （ESL）. This report presents the processes of CL implemented in two English intensive reading courses at a Chinese university. The purpose is to arouse the students＇ awareness of working in groups in their English reading classroom and to enhance their reading comprehension at tertiary level. The results show that students can adapt to small group work when they realize the benefits brought to them. Although positive effectiveness of CL is prevalent at any levels in educational contexts, benefits of CL on ESL are not deeply cultivated as expected, particularly for Chinese learners of English and some problems can also be found in implementing CL. As the emphasis of curriculum of English Language Teaching （ELT） in China has been on developing students＇ competence in communication in English, it is necessary for teachers to adopt CL in classroom instructions rather than teacher-centered approaches.

Attitude, Secondary Schools and Student Success in a Tertiary Mathematics Unit

There is a consensus in the literature that mathematical ability contributes to student success in tertiary education. More importantly, mathematical skills are necessary when successfully completing mathematics- and/or science-based degrees. Social sciences such as psychology and economics require statistical skills which also require knowledge of mathematics. Even business students, such as marketing and accounting students need the necessary mathematical skills to successfully complete their degrees at university. This paper suggests that student success in a core business subject is dependent on their mathematical aptitude, attitude, and type of secondary schooling whether government or non-government schools. There is urgency for universities to recognize that high failure rates are due to insufficient mathematics exposure in secondary schooling and remedial classes might not be enough. Specifying a minimum （maths, e.g., two units） requirement for entry and/or providing bridging programs to ensure students have the necessary basic mathematical skills would increase student success in quantitative units.

Exploration of Combining Strategy on Teaching Chinese as a Second Language Among American High School Students

Among different teaching methods in second language teaching, there are five different core relations： the relations between language and speech, between oral and written language, between foreign and native language, between integrity and individuality, between the use of foreign language and the development of intelligence. With a view on the entire structure of Chinese teaching and learning as a second language among American high school students and through scientifically conducting the five relations and subdividing the teaching purpose, contents, and objects, this paper will elaborate the strategy on selecting and combining different teaching methods in the whole Chinese teaching and learning process. The purpose of this paper is to greatly develop the effectiveness in teaching and learning Chinese as a second language through selecting appropriate strategies and integrating various advantages according to the teaching purpose, content, and the object.

Application of Literary Theory in Teaching Literature——A Case Study From ＂Approaching Fiction＂ in China Youth University of Political Studies

For most universities and colleges in China, literary theory is taught at the graduate level of literary studies. Most English teachers think literary theory is such a complex field with jargon-ridden disciplines and concepts that it is often considered as ＂a hot potato＂ in classroom teaching. Based on a case study from ＂Approaching Fiction＂ in China Youth University of Political Studies （CYUPS）, the present paper claims that application of literary theory in teaching literature not only greatly broadens students＇ horizon but also deepens their interpretation and understanding of literary works. With proper selection of teaching material and carefully designed teaching approaches, application of critical theory plays an increasingly important role in the undergraduate literature classroom.

In the Name of ESP Comments on the Recent Discussion on College English Teaching Reform in China

One of the most controversial debate topics in current College English teaching is whether EGP （English for General Purposes） should be replaced by ESP （English for Specific Purposes）. The latest College English Curriculum issued by MOE （Ministry of Education） does not reflect the trend of developing College English Teaching by focusing on ESP, but rather on improving general English course books. However, the first local College English Curriculum published in 2012 in Shanghai focuses on developing ESP and English for academic purpose as its teaching objectives. This paper analyzes different definitions of ESP in China＇s education setting, compares different views on handling the relationship between EGP and ESP in China＇s College English Reform, and explores how to apply an appropriate notion of EGP to College English teaching in China.
