It examines four aspects of higher order thinking viz metacognition, locus of control, self-efficacy and intrinsic values. The study involves a teaching intervention to provide empirical evidence to show that higher order thinking is improved when it is in the learning environment: (1) Provides opportunities for negotiation, shared control, critical voice, personal relevance and uncertainty; and (2) encourage language use in interacting, communicating and constructing meanings. The sample consisted of 77 accounting college students in Malaysia, randomly grouped into the traditional lecture style classroom and the transformative classroom. Four self-report questionnaires were used to measure higher order thinking and to assess whether students' perceptions of their learning environment. Split Plot Analysis of Variance (SPANOVA) and t-tests were used to test 3 hypotheses formulated for the study. The results show that when learning environment simulate the true arena for transformative learning and provides ample opportunities to use language, higher order thinking can be empowered.展开更多

This report presents the processes of CL implemented in two English intensive reading courses at a Chinese university. The purpose is to arouse the students' awareness of working in groups in their English reading classroom and to enhance their reading comprehension at tertiary level. The results show that students can adapt to small group work when they realize the benefits brought to them. Although positive effectiveness of CL is prevalent at any levels in educational contexts, benefits of CL on ESL are not deeply cultivated as expected, particularly for Chinese learners of English and some problems can also be found in implementing CL. As the emphasis of curriculum of English Language Teaching (ELT) in China has been on developing students' competence in communication in English, it is necessary for teachers to adopt CL in classroom instructions rather than teacher-centered approaches.展开更多

It is used for the manufacture of insecticides and fungicides. Arsenic may be absorbed accidentally through ingestion (food poisoning), inhalation (toxic air) and permeation of skin. It has been scientifically proved that as little as 20 milligrams of arsenic may be life-threatening. It attacks delicate internal organs of the body, thereby, leading to health disorders and eventual death. On the one hand, this paper is set out to prove that the English language exerts similar killing effects on the Igbo language. On the other hand, the author will suggest ways of salvaging Igbo people's mother tongue from such killing effects.展开更多

This paper conducts an empirical research to investigate the current situation of using formative assessment in College English teaching and its effects on College English teaching via questionnaires and interviews. The subjects of this research are 35 College English teachers and 5 classes of non-English majors in Harbin Engineering University. This paper finds that the use of formative assessment intensifies students' interests and develops their learning autonomy as well. Meanwhile, it provides timely feedback to teachers and modifies teachers' teaching strategies, which makes College English teaching more effective.展开更多

It was agreed that there are many improvements, including the proposal of learning strategies and emotions, and attitudes to learning English. However, few actual measures are carried out in implementation. Lack of support from school, parents and students proves to be a headache for teachers. The problems that hinder Chinese secondary ELT are hence pointed out: the traditional teaching methods, examination means, constraints, teacher quality and lack of support. Compromises should be made between the decision makers, teachers to bring satisfactory results to ELT in China. especially the course planners and the middle school展开更多

The sample consisted of 20 teachers: 10 males and 10 females who taught 10th-grade classes, and 20 10th-grade classes: 10 male classes and 10 female classes where the interaction was held. Analysis of the kinds and levels of classroom questions raised by both teachers and students was done. An X2-test was used in analyzing the data of this study to see whether there was a significant difference in the kinds and levels of classroom questions between male and female students. The finding of the study showed that male and female teachers raised three kinds of questions: wh-, yes/no, and multiple choice, there were no differences between male and female teachers in the kinds of questions raised. This study recommended that EFL teachers should vary their teaching procedures and use other different types and levels of questions, other than the types and levels mentioned above.展开更多

In order to show continuity with his other works, four of McEwan's novels--The lnnocent (1990), Amsterdam (1999), Saturday (2006), and On Chesil Beach (2008), have been analyzed before elaborating the novel and film adaptation of Atonement (2007). Apart from the narratological analysis, McEwan's layered works lend themselves to different kinds of readings, and the authors have used the theoretical notions of Immanuel Kant (1952) as well as concepts derived from the postmodem philosophical movement. The aim of the paper is to show how the chronotopical and intertextual nature of the literary original finds a worthy equivalent in the film version, proving the feasibility of a successful intermedial transfer of a complex narrative structure展开更多

The purposes ot this study are to investigate the development of Chinese EFL learners' attributions for their perceived success and failure in second language reading and to clarify the relationship between learners' reading proficiency levels and their attributions. The results show that (1) Nearly half of the university students feel "Just so so" in English reading; (2) Environmental variables such as teacher feedback, peers or classroom play an influential role in the learners' attribution. This paper concludes with a number of pedagogical suggestions for the teaching and learning of English reading.展开更多

Based on the theoretical study of Inter-language, transfer, Contrastive Analysis and Error Analysis as well as the correlations among them, this paper concentrates on some production errors caused by negative transfer. Some typical inter-lingual errors made by Chinese-speaking English learners are categorized and analyzed from the syntactic perspective and lexical perspective. Hopefully by such an analysis of language transfer, the characteristics of Chinese-speaking English learners' Inter-language will be revealed, and it might be helpful for English teaching and enhancing learners' English proficiency.展开更多

Skopos theory, as the best model that serves to the ends of professional translators, is taken as a basis for developing a logical framework of a research model. Within this context, the function of questionnaires in theoretical research is studied in such a way not only as to bridge the gap between practice and theory, but also in terms of their potentiality in yielding a causal research. In conclusion, this paper aims not only to unravel the ambiguous network between professional research conducted in translation process and questionnaires as tools of research, but it also discusses theoretical knowledge in terms of the logical framework they submit in research展开更多

And the classical teaching approach has long been put in question in the contemporary literature. Communicative strategies have an intimate relationship with communicative competence. Learners' effective and efficient employment of communicative strategies are the revelation of their strategic competence as well as communicative competence. This paper aims to reinforce learners' communicative competence by improving their communicative strategies and consequently improve their language proficiency, and helps to provide Chinese teachers with approaches to the development of students' communication strategies in classroom teaching. Therefore, in contrast with the old classroom teaching "TTT", a new teaching model "LLL" is proposed in this paper.展开更多

McFarlane attempts to use Roland Barthes' (1990) narrative theory for the comparison of novels and films, In any narrative, Barthes distinguishes two main groups of functions: functions proper and indices. McFarlane's ultimate aim with this taxonomy is to determine what elements of a novel are subject to adaptation proper and which ones are transferred directly into film. He concludes that a certain type of functions proper is transferable, while indices are more broadly open to adaptation than to the directness of transfer. The author finds McFarlane's theory problematic With the help of a Henry James' novella and its film adaptation, the author will try to demonstrate that functions proper are far too complex to enable a simple transfer. The author's point is that what is actually transferred from novel to film is something rather similar to the narrative functions described by early 20th century formalist Vladimir Propp展开更多

The Chinese people who migrated to Malaya two centuries ago brought with them many words related to trade. This phenomenon is more prominent now that the current majority of the Chinese in Malaysia are involved in trading and businesses Out of 136 loan words taken from the fourth edition of the Kamus Dewan (the Malay language monolingual dictionary used as a teaching and studying companion in Malaysia, 2005), 25 Chinese loan words are found to reflect elements of trade and these were used as research data. Semantic analysis was done in order to identify the meaning of these loan words in the Malay language. Borrowing methods were also assayed through the patterns of these loan words. Analyses showed that the Chinese loan words that are borrowed into the Malay language are numerous and have resulted in an enriched collection of Malay trade terms. These loan words are still widely used among speakers of the Malay language. The dominant borrowing method is transliteration. Hokkien or Amoy pronunciation was used as the basis for the formation of these loan words展开更多

It is one of the effective ways to make young learners understand English. This study describes the effect of using Balinese short stories to teach a class of young learners at Saraswati Primary School in Denpasar. The stories are an effective aid for teaching English as they have beautiful language, rhythmic refrains and repetitive sentence patterns. During the listening lesson, students are given pictures books (content stories) and occasionally they are set to listen to CDs. Various attractive strategies were used to help students acquire listening and speaking skills. These students comprise of students from Asia (China, Thailand, Korea, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, to name a few) and Europe. For these students, English is their second or third language and they face proficiency problems. To them, mastery of English is most important because all the courses in the university are taught in English and unless the students are proficient to operate in English, they will lose out and face difficulties in securing good grades for their subjects. Findings of this research will provide insights for the curriculum developers and English teachers at public universities especially in Malaysia that have been accepting students from Asia and the Middle East. The present curriculum need to be reviewed or a new curriculum need to be designed to meet the English needs of their non-native foreign students展开更多
