Its mutual aid and mutual encouragement functions are especially significant to students’s mooth completion of courses in distance education.\;From the angle of social psychology, the existence of study groups results from the gregarious motives of mankind, which are attributed bo the various needs, of human beings. In distance education, owing to the separation of teachers and learners, students tend to have a much stronger desire of seeking help from others.\;Thus, the need of study is the major cause of gregariousness, and the study process also becomes learners’ socializing process. Besides the need of study, there are the need of friendship, of respect, of self-realization, and of self-display. The satisfaction of those needs enables study groups to have strong cohesion. \;The forming of study group can be divided into forming by force or forming voluntarily; and the factors that have influence of their functioning include the size of the groups (the number of students), the similarities and mutual completion between their members, the group leaders, and the satisfaction degrees of their members’ needs. Apart from the function of meeting the various needs of their members’ the function of quickening the socializing of their members, the function of achieving organizational targets, the function of maintaining teaching order and promoting teaching, study groups can particularly display the mutual aid, mutual encouragement and educational functions in distance teaching. Therefore, we must guide and show solictitude to study groups so that the work can be smoothly carried out.展开更多
