The ultimate goal of college personnel training is "comprehensively implementing quality-oriented education and cultivating innovation-oriented personnel". The application of "harmonious teaching method" in the sports dance teaching of general colleges can help theoretically analyze the teaching process of existing sports dance actions and reveal the main reason for the gap with the goal of "comprehensive harmonious development", and also can verify the theoretical analysis results. Therefore, using teaching experiment method, experiment class and control class were selected for implementing two different teaching methods. Difference T test of small samples average was made on the acquired data for revealing the teaching effect difference between two different teaching methods. The result shows that the difference between two teaching methods was significant. The application of "harmonious teaching method" in the sports dance teaching of physical education of general colleges plays a certain positive role in training the comprehensive and harmonious moral, intellectual and physical developments of college students. 展开更多

This study examines the relationship between discourse intonation (henceforth DI) and teacher cognition. Drawing on the rich literature on the teacher cognition in grammar, this study borrows some relevant insights for a better understanding of the relationship between teacher cognition and DI. Following a qualitative treatment, the study concludes that instruction on D1 is a dynamic debate fed by both teacher training and teachers' experience of teaching and learning in general, which leads into suggesting the need for any teacher training on DI to take into account both DI knowledge as well as teacher core and peripheral belief. The contribution of the study lies in its tapping of a relatively poorly investigated area and offering advances on the many negative or simplistic teacher attitudes regarding intonation instruction as expressed in the literature, as well as in bringing to the surfaces something which teachers sometimes are not explicitly aware of. 展开更多

In historically, culturally, and technically variable media constellations, various forms of media activism, media education, and learning design have been developed. As to media activism, there is a broad spectrum, including graffiti, radio activism, community media, visual activism, tactical media (Garcia & Lovink, 1997), and more recently, media interventions questioning the workings of biopower (Da Costa & Philip, 2008). On the other hand, debates on media competency and media literacy have been going on for a few decades. Although media have also been conceptualized as media of resistance or critique in informal contexts as well as in formal education, lively exchanges of concepts and ideas are comparatively seldom in respective traditions. The paper aims at exploring challenges for media education and interfaces between both fields. 展开更多

This article aims to analyze the so-called“starting point”when modern scientific and technological successes in China were in their infancy, and to provide the reader with insight on how various challenges were overcome in their development. The period under review is 1949–1955.The information about this period was obtained from Soviet archives and special literature. The first part of the article describes the state of affairs in the People’s Republic of China(PRC)in the early years of its formation, focusing on education, science, industry(including military),communications, and rail transport. The second part turns to the Soviet specialists working in the PRC during these years, focusing on their profession, number, cities of residence and living conditions.Issues regarding Chinese specialists’internship in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics(USSR)are also touched upon. The article selects several lesserknown areas in which professional competencies were established in this very weak post-war country to discover the origins of the most important science and technology in the contemporary PRC,thereby contributing to readers’understanding of the initial conditions for the development of science and technology in China. 展开更多

An additional language, sign language was approved as an official language at the end of 2008. The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and the South African Schools Act 84 of 1996 emphasise teaching and learning through any mother tongue, a learner would understand best. Section 29(1) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa categorically states that: "Everyone has the right to receive education in the official language or languages of their choice in public educational institutions where that education is reasonably practicable". However, most text books written in English have been prescribed at many schools. One is not certain whether the subjects are taught in English or in the indigenous language at these schools. In the end, those teachers use the mother tongue, together with English, in teaching learners. This result in code switching and code mixing takes place in classes, which are meant to facilitate communication across barriers of colour, language, and region, while creating an environment in which respect for languages other than one's own would be encouraged. Teaching and learning in one's mother tongue promotes full participation in the economy of the country. The aim of the paper is to investigate teaching and learning in Vhembe primary schools of the Limpopo Province in South Africa, within the framework of existing legislation. This will be compared with empirical evidence. The researcher seeks to establish what language(s) primary schools use for teaching and learning. Based on this, conclusions and recommendations will be made to assist stakeholders in language-in-education policy formulation. 展开更多

This demonstration of concept applies diagnostic-prescriptive reading instruction, a methodology useo m omteu atd^u~ developmental education, toward improving reading comprehension and self-regulated comprehension strategy selection in Chinese postsecondary education. A single tutor, also the researcher, works closely with one Chinese university student to develop student-centered comprehension strategies that she can practice on her own. After a battery of formal and informal assessments and interviews, decoding and understanding deficiencies are identified, characterized, and discussed. Both the student and her tutor develop and execute a study plan, which was completed during the spring semester of 2010 at Sha'anxi University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Xi'an, People's Republic of China (PRC). By focusing on the subject's primary decoding deficiency, spelling, and her primary understanding deficiency, lack of background knowledge, the subject and her reading tutor are able to strategically tackle five reading comprehension goals: (1) spelling; (2) phonemic awareness; (3) noticing structural and cohesive elements; (4) comparing argumentative and evaluative texts; and (5) analyzing expository texts in business and economics. A final discussion analyzes both qualitative and quantitative data, including unexpected discoveries such as the salience of cohesion in reading comprehension and the cultural biases of standardized reading assessments. 展开更多

It first discusses different models of English in the context of globalization. With detailed analysis of their theoretical backgrounds, development and foundations, this paper classifies these models into three groups: dualism (i.e., dualic model), trinalism (trinalic model) and monism (monic model). Through comparison, Yoneoka’s English Umbrella Theory is found to be more comprehensive and is improved into a practical Revised English Umbrella (REU) with the notion of English as an International Language (EIL). Second, the changing models in English education are briefly reviewed. Attention is paid to the Computer and Classroom-Based (CCB) Model of College English education because of new requirements for College English education. Students’ competence in cross-cultural communication is becoming more and more important in the EIL context. Finally, a modified CCB model is promoted with the REU, combining EIL and English Umbrella elements. 展开更多

CR theory focuses on the study of academic or professional writing across different cultural settings. One recurring question of CR theory in the Chinese ESL context is whether the rhetorical differences in organization, modeling, and syntax between Chinese and English writing indeed exist, and if so how they affect ESL writing. Through examining the controversies surrounding these rhetorical differences along with a brief review of the development of CR theory and pedagogical implications, this paper contends that the study of CR theory has exerted beneficial influences on L2 writing. 展开更多

Two elementary CSL learners were chosen as research participants. Lived experience descriptions, think-aloud, retrospective interviews, field observations, and research journal writings were used to investigate the sources of elementary CSL learners' reading anxiety and the ways employed to reduce their reading anxiety. The data were analyzed by Moustakas' (1994) data analysis procedures, Creswell's (2007) three steps, and Bogdon & Biklen's (1992) data analysis methods. Results show that elementary CSL learners do have reading anxiety in their reading process and the sources of the anxiety include cross-linguistic differences between English and Chinese expressions, lack of previous knowledge, difficult and complex vocabulary, wrong guesses, and comprehension difficulties. Both participants tried to use strategies such as guessing, looking up words, understanding two character words based on the meaning of each character, skipping and keepitag reading, and using previous knowledge to predict the rest of the text to reduce their reading anxiety. The present study provides both theoretical and pedagogical implications in the field of CSL reading learning and teaching. 展开更多
