On management of college English teaching of big classes

In recent years, the scale of enrollment of college students has been expanded. As a result, in colleges teachers are badly needed for the basic course of college English. To solve this problem, big classes are adopted for college English teaching in some universities. And scientific management can guarantee the quality of college English teaching of big classes. Finally, this article introduces four tactics to manage college English teaching of big classes.

Team management in college English classroom teaching

With the rapid development and furthering of higher education, most Chinese colleges have carried out large-scale enrollment program, which is a necessary improvement toward higher education reform. Meanwhile, the increasing number of students has posed new problems and requirements for the old teaching method： the English teachers are facing more students and larger classes. In Zhejiang University, City College （ZUCC） the credit system and course selection has challenged the English teachers on a higher level. Every English teacher is facing classes of more than 40 students from various departments with sharp contrast among individual students in their English proficiency level and local background. How can every student actively participate in teaching activity so as to achieve better performance in English class？ Many teachers, therefore, have adopted team activity and cooperative teaching method to stimulate student participation in class. Inspired by the management theory to optimize student groups into independent teams, the concept of team construction and team management has been introduced into College English Teaching in ZUCC, which has given new meaning to team activity--it will become an interdisciplinary teaching method with its own feature.

Challenge and Revelation Massive Open Online Course Brings to the British and American Literature Teaching

Massive Open Online Course （MOOC） has many characteristics, such as mass, openness, and online learning, which can effectively make up for the problem ＆shortage of teachers in the college English teaching. But, there is also a challenge to introduce MOOC to the college English teaching. This paper analyzes the challenge and revelation MOOC brings to college English teaching combined with the characteristics of MOOC, and points out that the role of teachers, students, and managers should be changed under the background of MOOC.

Computer Management of Quantitative Analysis Chemistry Experiment

The application of computer in the quantitative analysis chemistry experiment is a chemistry experiment teaching applications software, developed by Visual Basic （6.0）, based on the content of quantitative analysis chemistry experiment of chemistry major in higher institute. The software has the characteristic of the easy installation, the easy operation, the strong practicability, pertinence, the systematicness and the running stability, so it provides a platform in the quantitative analysis chemistry experiment for the students＇ assessment system of automatic processing, and it has a high popularization value. The project＇s technical route design is reasonable, the research method is correct, and the experimental data processing results are reliable, which has reached the leading domestic level in the quantitative analysis chemistry experiment teaching field of computer data processing. And this project has been through the achievements appraisal of Gansu Provincial Sci. ＆ Tech. Department.

The Impact of Discovery Education Digital Textbook Usage on Students＇ Achievements

Discovery Education digital textbook series help accelerating school districts＇ digital transition in different subjects for K-8 and high school classrooms and related services. We evaluated the impact of using Discovery Education digital textbooks on students＇ science, english and math achievement in a large school district in southwest United States.

The Internet in EFL Teacher Education： Investigating the Possibilities and Challenges in a Pre-service Education Programme

The paper reported on a small-scale qualitative study on EFL （English as a Foreign Language） teacher education with a two-fold objective, investigating the possibility of integrating the Internet for academic purposes in the context of a pre-service English teacher education programme in Egypt, and suggesting some guidelines based on the specific context of Assiut University College of Education. Semi-structured interviews were conducted online with some student teachers （n = 10） and teacher educators （n = 10） at the university to identify their personal viewpoints, experiences and concerns regarding integrating the Internet into this teacher education context. For triangulation purposes, content analysis was conducted on 12 online documents. Results reveal some difficulties, challenges and concerns related to the process and some new forms of literacy needed for this context. Based on this, some guidelines are suggested for integrating the Internet into pre-service EFL teacher education programmes with special reference to the Egyptian context.

LoColms： an innovative approach of enhancing traditional classroom form of education by promoting web-based distance learning in the poorer countries

There have been numerous attempts recently to promote technology based education (Shrestha, 1997) in the poorer third world countries, but so far all these have not provided a sustainable solution as they are either centered and controlled from abroad and relying solely on foreign donors for their sustenance or they are not web-based, which make distribution problematic, and some are not affordable by most of the local population in these places. In this paper we discuss an application, the Local College Learning Management System (LoColms) , which we are developing, that is both sustainable and economical to suit the situation inthese countries. The application is a web-based system, and aims at improving the traditional form of education by empowering the local universities. Its economicability comes from the fact that it is supported by traditional communication technology, the public switching telephone network system, PSTN, which eliminates the need for packet switched or dedicated private virtual networks (PVN) usually required in similar situations. At a later stage, we shall incorporate ontology and paging tools to improve resource sharability and storage optimization in the Proxy Caches (ProCa) and LoColms servers. The system is based on the client/server paradigm and its infrastructure consists of the PSTN, ProCa, with the learning centers accessing the universities by means of point-to-point protocol (PPP) .

Study on classroom activities in children English class

Though classroom activities in children English class have been studied by many scholars, there is a lack of real class investigation and analysis on this subject. Combining the observations of classroom activities in a real children English class with the interviews with the child students and the teacher in that class, this paper presents various classroom activities used in real children English class. Among all the activities of greetings and free conversations, guessing new words, pair or group work, games, songs, chants, making stories and competition, child students prefer games, role play, making stories, and competitions, in which children can take the initiatives; while the teacher favors greetings, guessing new words, role play, and group work. The problem of the activities that children students like the most is that they may cause some disturbance in class. To solve this problem, the author thinks that these activities are better to be put at the end of the class.

Developing time-management skills in the foreign language classroom

The practical problems all students may face at some point in their college life are procrastination and time management. A recent survey shows that most of the first-year college students with language learning disabilities lack time-management skills. In order to help the students solve these problems, a language teacher should not only help students to develop their language skills, but also help them to learn some techniques of time-management. To ensure that, teachers need to help the students with the setting of clear goals and ways of planning and scheduling time for a balanced lifestyle.

Enhance the confidence of the academic theories and promote the localization of the English professional teaching theories in Chinese universities

With the acceleration of the process of the globalization, the teaching of the English major is becoming more and more important. The teaching should take the students as the main subjects, and the teaching of English should be based on the ability of the students. Our country is a big economic country, and the knowledge of English is spread widely in China, but most of its theoretical researches are t^om abroad. We should pay enough attention to the contents of this theoretical research. This kind of situation has also aroused the high attention of the relevant educational personnel. Therefore, we need to improve the self-confidence of the academic theories, strengthen the existing teaching theories and promote the localization of the teaching of English majors in an all-round way, which is also the key point of this article.

Discussion on the Application of Flipped Classroom in English Teaching in Higher Vocational Colleges

Compared with college students in regular higher education institutions, students in higher vocational colleges have a series of problems, such as lack of study foundation, learning interest and self-control. Although they have studied English for many years, they still have many problems in applying English. They also have some problems in English learning. Under this background, English teachers in higher vocational colleges must improve teaching methods and stimulate students＇ interest in English learning. Building a teaching model of flipped classroom based on information technology will provide new ideas for English teaching reform.

An Action Research on Constructing a Multiple Learning Evaluation System on the Context of College English Teaching Reform

Learning evaluation reform, an important part of the College English Teaching Reform, is not only a basis for teachers to reflect on their teaching method, to improve their teaching management, and to ensure the teaching quality, but also an effective means for students to enhance their learning efficiency and to gain sound learning effect as well. This research was intended to apply action research to the construction of multiple learning evaluation system with the aim of proving the effectiveness of the system on raising students＇ learning autonomy to find problems in the teaching, to testify the problems through questionnaire, then to design a feasible teaching strategy and carry out an experimental teaching, and finally to reflect on the whole teaching process from the perspective of how well the learner＇s learning autonomy was enhanced. The research result is valid, positively testifying the presupposition that the Multiple Evaluation System is a comprehensive one, which makes it possible to evaluate the students＇ progress in the whole learning process.

Dreaming a Possible Dream： Getting Thai Students to Speak in English in a Public Speaking Class

The paper is an analysis of how much success Thai teachers of English have had throughout four decades of teaching English as a Foreign Language （TEFL） and the future direction to take. Thai teachers are aware that their students are not confident of their speaking abilities. That is why they try to avoid making mistakes in pronunciation and connected speech making as mistakes are taken as signs of inability. It is a common sight in an English class that Thai students prefer to remain in their comfort zone of using the Thai language. Speaking is a productive skill; teaching someone to speak cannot be successfully done through listening to the ＂how to＂ lecture. The author proposes that to dream a possible dream, the teachers need to change their course design to adopt the goals of English for communication and enhancement of soft skills such as networking skill, teamwork skill, self-management skill, creativity, and work attitude. An example of a course design used is discussed with the underlining learning theories for the course, the course organization, and the fruits of this endeavor. This course is adopting the ＂Teach Less and Learn More＂ approach, a route to take for real learning.
