While there has been significant scholarly attention to the Showtime Series Dexter (2006-13) and the fundamental choice between being good or evil that its protagonist Dexter Morgan must make, this article advances ...While there has been significant scholarly attention to the Showtime Series Dexter (2006-13) and the fundamental choice between being good or evil that its protagonist Dexter Morgan must make, this article advances scholarship in three ways. Firstly, it examines Dexter's final twist in plot and the decision Dexter makes to finally embrace his "dark passenger" to argue for the necessity of the plot twist to the series, which scholarship has not yet performed. Secondly, by situating Dexter's decision within a framework focused on reproductive futurism, a revised and more nuanced approach to Dexter's ontological dilemma can be proffered. Finally, by locating Dexter's dark passenger within the theoretical frames of reproductive futurism and community this article adds an important dimension to notions of the monster conventionally rooted in theories of identity and subjectivity. In the final moments of the series everything changes for Dexter as his identity is redeemed for a reproductive future without guarantees, which this article argues is germane to considerations ofbiopolitics and community in the contemporary period.展开更多

The pronephric kidney duct appeared early in hatching although the primordial haemopoietic stem cells were observed within a week after hatching. The spleen was first seen after 8 d of hatching. The thymus appeared after 15 d, situated near the pronephric kidney. Small lymphoid cells appeared during the later phase of the post-larval stage in the sequence of thymus, kidney and spleen. During the 40 d of observations, there were no distinct inner or outer zones in thymus and no red or white pulp in spleen. These results suggest that the nonspecific defense immune system plays a very important role in the early larval stage of Japanese flounder.展开更多
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to ascertain the relationship between efficient medical services and Nigerian undergraduates' participation in sports. Methods and Materials: A randomly sampled population of 2...Purpose: The purpose of the study was to ascertain the relationship between efficient medical services and Nigerian undergraduates' participation in sports. Methods and Materials: A randomly sampled population of 280 students and 12 managerial staff of sport and medical units participated in the descriptive study. Responses to a validated questionnaire provided the source of data. A test-retest reliability coefficient (r) = 0.80. Data were analyzed with simple percentages and Chi-square at 〈 0.05 alpha level. Results: All the respondents in medical centre and sport unit oriented the students on the available medical services and facilities on campus: availability of first aid services, treatment services for complicated injuries (inpatient), referral services for specialized care, financial support during hospitalization. Complementary results from the students showed that the majority of the respondents (50%) strongly agreed that medical centre was available in the Campus, and 36% strongly affirmed to availability of first aid services. Thirty four percent of the respondents strongly agreed to the availability of treatment services, while 40% of the respondent agreed to the availability of free medical services. The study revealed that there was a significant relationship between efficient medical services and students' participation in sports. Conclusion: All medical services were available but students perceive the services as inefficient which implies poor or non utilization.展开更多
At the Institute of Electrical Machines of the Rheinisch Westfalilische Technische Hochschule Aachen University, there is a project financed by student fees for the realization of a magnetically levitated train in the...At the Institute of Electrical Machines of the Rheinisch Westfalilische Technische Hochschule Aachen University, there is a project financed by student fees for the realization of a magnetically levitated train in the scale of 1:50. Undergraduate students are supposed to get the possibility to design and build up a real train which serves as demonstrator for a mechatronic system. This project strengthens the motivation of students, since a practical demonstration of electromagnetic forces is given in addition to theoretical courses. This paper introduces the major project steps and explains the learning targets for the students. It focuses on analytical magnetic circuit design, numerical field simulation, modeling and control of a multi degree of freedom system, electronic circuit design, measurement setups and a first prototype test bench.展开更多

However, the underlying molecular mechanisms have not yet been clearly defined. In this study, using various techniques such as high throughput sequencing technology, bioinformatics, quantitative real-time PCR, and immunoblot analysis,we aimed to understand whether matrine serves as a novel regulator of FOXO and PI3K-AKT signaling pathway. DU145 and PC-3 cell lines were cultured for 24 h in vitro. Cells were treated with either matrine or control serum for 48 h, followed by extraction of total RNA. The RNA was sequenced using HiSeq 2500 high-throughput sequencing platform (Illumina). A gene library was established and quality analysis of read data carried out. Integrated database from the website DAVID was used to analyze Gene Ontology (GO), and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) pathway of differential genes was used for pathway analysis, screening for fold differences of more than two times. The FOXO and PI3K-AKT signaling pathways were screened, and expression levels of mRNA and core protein detected by real-time PCR and immunoblotting, respectively. High throughput sequencing and GO analysis revealed that differentially expressed genes before and after treatment played an important role in cell metabolic process, growth process, anatomical structure formation, cellular component organization, and biological regulation. KEGG signal pathway analysis revealed that FOXO and PI3K-AKT signal pathways had a significant difference between before and after matrine-treated androgen-independent prostate cancer cells PC-3 and DU145. Real-time PCR showed that matrine treatment led to a significant increase in the expression levels of FOXO1A, FOXO3A, FOXO4, and FOXO6 in DU145 and PC-3 cells (P<0.01 or P<0.05), whereas the PI3K expression levels decreased (P<0.01). Similarly, immunoblotting revealed a significant increase (P<0.05) in the expression levels of FOXO1A FOXO3A, FOXO4, and FOXO6 in both PC-3 and DU145 cells, whereas PI3K expression levels decreased (P<0.05). Matrine had a broad regulating effect on the mRNA expression profiles of both PC-3 and DU145 cells. Matrine may inhibit cell proliferation, migration, as well as invasion, and induce apoptosis in both PC-3 and DU145 cells through FOXO and PI3K-AKT signaling pathways. Matrine could therefore be used as a complementary drug to present chemotherapeutic agents, for treating androgen-independent prostate cancer.展开更多

It calls for not only a green revolution in our ways of production and ways of life, but also a restructuring of the "knowledge-oriented" model of intellectual production that has served as bedrock to support the single-minded mentality of developmentalism. One of the possible routes to arrive at a new Weltanschauung is what I have termed as the "living wisdom" that can help to explicate the inexplicables by existing social theories. I argue in this paper that the Chinese living wisdom offers a nutshell view of how traditional resources can be made accessible for us to respond to current unprecedented chaJJenges facing htunamty. It is as much a best oppommky in the "metropolitan moment" for a "China's representation" as for other civilizations, cultures and nations, such as the "eco--social time" in primitive societies, the ancient European philosophies on ontology and cosmology, and the rejection of sagehood and intellect by Zhuangzi.展开更多
