The design procedure of a dense gap-graded friction course(DGGFC) with coarse aggregate void filling method is presented. Testing results show that a DGGFC mixture possesses a dense stone-matrix structure, good stability and almost the same texture depth as stone matrix asphalt (SMA). It also has a coarse and even surface after paving and has no separation during construction. It is durable and impermeable. It balances and improves the inherent inconsistency of asphalt mixture between the large texture depth for skid resistance and the impermeability for durability. The actual application in the Nanning-Liuzhou Expressway also shows that the performance of the DGGFC is as excellent as that of SMA, while the DGGFC mixture is cheaper than SMA. The DGGFC mixture is good for wearing course of pavement. Further research on DGGFC can be helpful for improving the surface skid resistance, prolonging the life-span period and reducing the construction costs of asphalt pavement. 展开更多

In order to accurately and quickly identify the safety status pattern of coalmines,a new safety status pattern recognition method based on the extension neural network (ENN) was proposed,and the design of structure of network,the rationale of recognition algorithm and the performance of proposed method were discussed in detail.The safety status pattern recognition problem of coalmines can be regard as a classification problem whose features are defined in a range,so using the ENN is most appropriate for this problem.The ENN-based recognition method can use a novel extension distance to measure the similarity between the object to be recognized and the class centers.To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method,a real-world application on the geological safety status pattern recognition of coalmines was tested.Comparative experiments with existing method and other traditional ANN-based methods were conducted.The experimental results show that the proposed ENN-based recognition method can identify the safety status pattern of coalmines accurately with shorter learning time and simpler structure.The experimental results also confirm that the proposed method has a better performance in recognition accuracy,generalization ability and fault-tolerant ability,which are very useful in recognizing the safety status pattern in the process of coal production. 展开更多

Although there have been numerous efforts to eliminate cracks, some cracks are very harmful and should be repaired as soon as possible. On the other hand, some cracks are almost harmless. So, a good guideline regarding how to deal with cracks in concrete structures is needed. In this guideline, the practical investigation, repair and strengthening method of cracked concrete structures is discussed. And the detecting subjects are cracks generated immediately after casting and during the service time. This guideline targets on the owners (including managers) of concrete structure and the engineers working for the maintenance of concrete structure. JCI (Japan Concrete Institute) published first version of "Practical Guideline for Investigation and Repair of Cracked Concrete Structures" in 1980, and then the fourth version titled "Practical Guideline for Investigation, Repair and Strengthening of Cracked Concrete Structures--2009" was published. This guideline is very practical when cracks are observed in existing concrete structures, in any other countries as well as in Japan. In this paper, a new practical model for real heavy vehicle structure is developed to investigate dynamic responses under steering/acceleration or braking maneuvers. The generalized six DoFs (degrees-of-freedom) nonlinear vehicle model M1 including longitudinal, lateral, yaw, vertical, roll and pitch dynamics is validated using the measured data reported in different studies. This model takes the CG (center of gravity) of sprung mass, unsprung mass and total vehicle mass into account. Based on this model, the effects of the inertia parameters on the vehicle dynamic responses are investigated for more comprehensive assessments of the model structure. Another nonlinear vehicle model 342 derived from M1 which assumes that the vehicle has a single CG as reported in literature is also developed. The dynamic responses of the vehicle model Mj are compared with those of the model M2 to demonstrate the performance potential of the proposed nonlinear model. The results of dynamic responses with the nonlinear vehicle model MI suggest that the model could offer considerable potential in realizing enhanced ride and handling performance, as well as improved roll and pitch properties in a flexible manner. 展开更多

Knowledge of the environment is essential for the survival of organisms; but those organisms have to have the capacity to stabilize such knowledge. The aim of this article is to analyze the various strategies for stabilizing human knowledge, with a special focus on its material anchors and their interactions with other stabilization means. In particular, I consider how such stabilization is reflected in scientific activity and practice, and what its repercussions are for the models of science that have dominated the philosophical landscape of the 20th century. My starting hypothesis will be that the role of material anchors in stabilizing conceptual blends is analogous to that of technology in grounding scientific knowledge. The framework I adopt with regard to conceptualization is that of Fauconnier and Turner (2002) on conceptual blends. Just as technology intervenes in scientific practice in conjunction with conceptual elements, so do material anchors, which conjoin other non-material strategies of knowledge stabilization. Endowing knowledge with a material basis may be understood firstly as an element (sometimes a key element) for representing knowledge and offering an explanation, and secondly as a way of providing a scientific hypothesis with empirical grounding. It is this second sense that connects with scientific experimentation and the use of instruments and technology. 展开更多

This paper aims at investigating the efficacy of different state-of-art damage detection methods when applied to real worm structures subjected to ground motion excitations, for which the literature contributions are, at present, still not fully comprehensive. To this purpose the paper analyses two test structures: (1) a four-story scaled steel frame tested on a shake table in a controlled laboratory conditions, and (2) a seven-story reinforced concrete building monitored during the seismic excitations of the 1999 Chi-Chi (Taiwan) Earthquake main shock and numerous fore and afiershocks. Some model based damage approaches and statistics based damage indexes are reviewed. The different methodologies and indexes are, then, applied to the two test structures with the final aim of analysing their performance and validity within the case of a laboratory scaled model and a real world structure subjected to input ground motion. 展开更多
