This paper investigates the distribution of the disease in regions of north, north-east, central and south Thailand. Between the earliest recorded of outbreak of trichinosis in Mae Hong Son Province in 1962 and 2006, there have been 135 outbreaks involving 7340 patients and 97 deaths in Thailand. The highest number of cases, 557, was recorded in 1983. Most infected patients were in the 35-44 year age group, and the disease occurred more frequently in men than women during 1962-2003, with no significant sex difference during 2004-2006. Outbreaks were most common in the northern areas, especially in rural areas where raw and under-cooked pork and/or wild animals are eaten. Human infections occur annually in northern Thailand during communal feasts celebrating the Thai New Year. Trichinosis causes have been reported every year, supporting the need for planning education programs.展开更多

The disease is spread solely through an intermediary named oncomelania, so its spread of schistosomiasis can be controlled by properly designing water intakes which prevent oncomelania from entering farming land or residential areas. This paper reports a successful design process and a new oncomelania free intake device. The design of the new intake is based on a sound research program in which extensive experimental studies were carried out to gain knowledge of oncomelania eco hydraulic behavior and detailed flow field information through CFD simulation.展开更多

Methods: The clinical characteristics of 2 patients diagnosed and treated in our hospital were reported, and 42 cases that had been reported from years 1993 to 2007 are analyzed. Results: In our report, the first patient attacked serious asthma time after time, the second patient suffered from bronchiectasis with a protracted infection course. Forty-four cases all have pathogen examination and parasitic expertise. The most common symptoms are fever, cough and expectoration. 1/3 of the patients have increased acidophilic granulocyte in peripheral blood. Chest X film and CT scanning suggest changes were similar to pneumonia. Chronic cases are manifested with bronchial asthma, bronchiectasis and pulmonary abscess. L. blattarum found in phlegm or specimen collected by bronchoscopy provides the most reliable evidence for the diagnosis of this disease. Conclusion: Bronchopulmonary L. blattarum infection is a new kind of diseases. The clinical manifestations are similar to pneumonia, asthma, bronchiectasis infection or pulmonary abscess. L. blattarum found in sputum smear, bronchoscopic brush smear, bronchoscopic biopsy smear, or hronchoalceolar lavage under microscope is the foundation of the diagnosis. The pathogen species has not been finally confirmed. It is still unclear how the pathogen exists in the natural environment, how to transmit to persons and what kind of people would suffer from the disease more easily. Treatment only with antibiotics is not effective to this disease. Metronidazole with dosage of 0.5 g per time and twice per day was effective to most patients, the period of treatment need to last 14-38 d, but multidrug resistance case had been reoorted.展开更多

METHODS:E.histolytica cysts and trophozoites isolated from a patient with amebiasis were cultivated in the medium, incubated at 37℃ for a period of 4 days and 40×10~4/ml amebic cysts were then transferred to a fresh medium. At the second stage,0.05,0.1 and 0.2 mM of selected metal ions were added to the medium, and the effects of these ions on parasitic reproduction compared with the control group were observed. RESULTS:It was determined that the number of living parasites in all the groups containing metal ions decreased significantly starting from 30 minutes (P<0.01).CuCl_2 showed the highest lethal effect on E.histolytica cysts, whereas the lowest lethal effect was observed with CoCl_2.It was also seen that the number of living cells was decreased as the ion concentration and exposure time were increased, and that there were no living parasites in the medium at the end of 24 h (P<0.01). CONCLUSION:It may be stated that the effect of ever- increasing contamination of the environment with metal waste materials on parasites should be investigated further.展开更多

METHODS" Clinical records of consecutive patients who attended Gastroenterology Department at Aga Khan University Hospital from January 2000 to June 2003 and had esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) with duodenal biopsies and international classification of diseases 9th revision with clinical modifications (ICD-9-CM) coded with giardiasis were studied. RESULTS: Two hundred and twenty patients fulfilled the above criteria. There were 44% (96/220) patients who were giardiasis positive, 72% (69/96) of them were males and 28% (27196) of them were females. There were 65% (81/124) males and 35% (43/124) females who were giardiasis negative. The mean age of patients with giardiasis was 28±17 years, while that of giardiasis negative patients was 40±18 years (P〈0.001). In patients with giardiasis, abdominal pain was present in 71% (68/96) of patients (P = 0.02) and diarrhea in 29% (28/96) (P = 0.005); duodenitis in 25% (24/96) on EGD (P = 0.006) and in 68% (65/96) on histopathology (P = 0.002). CONCLUSION: Giardiasis occurs significantly in young people with abdominal pain, while endoscopic duodenitis is seen in only 25% of giardiasis positive cases, which supports routine duodenal biopsy.展开更多

Cultivated tea trees provide a habitat for insect pests and their natural enemies. In Japan, granuloviruses (GVs) have successfully controlled two of the most important pests of tea, Adoxophyes honmai and Homona magnanima (Tortricidae: Lepidoptera). The GVs are produced in vivo and a single application sustains pesticidal efficacy throughout a year, which encompasses 4 to 5 discrete generations of both species. A. honmai and H. magnanima also have various natural enemies, especially hymenopteran parasitoids. Such resident natural enemies also play a role in reducing the pest density in virus-controlled fields, but the effect of virus infection on parasitoids sharing the same host larva has not been well studied. Survival of one of the major parasitoids of A. honmai, Ascogaster reticulata (Braconidae: Hymenoptera), is reduced by virus infection of the host. Viruses, including GV and entomopoxvirus (EPV), and certain koinobiont endoparasitoids, including A. reticulata, are both known to regulate host endocrinology. However, the GV and EPV have distinct host regulation mechanisms, and consequently have different impacts on the survival of A. retuculata, when A. reticulata parasitizes a host that is infected with either GV or EPV. These additional effects on host regulation displayed by both viruses and parasitoids affect the outcome of virus-parasitoid interactions.展开更多

The present study is focused on diagnosing health problems, particularly anemia, through a description of hematological findings amongst men and woman aged 18 to 50 years, living at various altitudes, and belonging to several different indigenous communities: the Huitoto and Embera of Caqueta, Florencia; the Born, Muinane, Okaina, Huitoto communities of La Chorrera, Amazonas; and the Yanaconas of Bogota, D.C. Tests performed included automated hemogram tests, ferritin, c-reactive protein, and parasitological assessment to correlate the presence of anemia and parasitism. The authors used a quantitative and transversal, structured, non-experimental, correlational, stratified sample design with 105 samples (51 men, 54 women). The results showed that 7.8% (4/51) of the men had anemia, compared with 29.6% (16/54) of the women--more than triple the incidence of the male population. Moreover, we found a higher incidence of anemia in rural areas, where the majority of the country's indigenous populations live. In the parasitological study, 87.7% (50/57) of the participants tested positive for intestinal parasites. These findings are expected to help authorities implement more effective responses to health issues in these communities.展开更多

Twenty-three percent to 44% of patients develop depression. A minority of patients evolve to psychosis. To the best of our knowledge, no cases of psychogenic parasitosis occurring during interferon therapy have been described in the literature. We present a 49-year-old woman who developed a delusional parasitosis during treatment with pegylated interferon alpha-2b weekly and ribavirin. She complained of seeing parasites and the larvae of fleas in her stools. This could not be confirmed by any technical examination. All the complaints disappeared after stopping pegylated interferon alpha-2b and reappeared after restarting it. She had a complete sustained viral response.展开更多

Colonoscopy has the significant advantage that polyps can be removed during the same procedure. Occasionally, colonoscopy can also reveal unexpected findings, including parasitic infections, even in asymptomatic patients. Tapeworms or cestodes are hermaphroditic parasites, which can live for considerable periods of time in the human gastrointestinal tract. Fish tapeworm (Diphyllobothrium species) are endemic in various parts of the world, the commonest species being Diphyllobothrium latum. Humans are the main definitive host for D. Latum and the majority of individuals harbouring the parasite are asymptomatic, while 40% of infected individuals may have low vitamin B12 levels. We describe a case of D. latum infection found on routine colonoscopic screening for colorectal cancer in an asymptomatic patient, which was successfully treated with praziquantel. The infection likely arose following raw fish (sushi) consumption.展开更多

These additional effects on host regulation displayed by both viruses and parasitoids affect the outcome of virus-parasitoid interactions.
文摘Colombia enjoys considerable ethnic diversity, although its indigenous population, part of the world's shared cultural heritage has been reduced by various factors, including displacement, poverty, and poor access to timely and quality healthcare. These findings are expected to help authorities implement more effective responses to health issues in these communities.
文摘During treatment of chronic hepatitis C patients with interferon and ribavirin, a lot of side effects are described. She had a complete sustained viral response.
文摘Colorectal cancer screening can be performed by fecal occult blood testing, sigmoidoscopy, double contrast barium enema or colonoscopy. The infection likely arose following raw fish (sushi) consumption.
文摘Subclinical gut inflammation has been described in up to twothirds of patients with spondyloarthropathies(SpA).Arthritis represents an extraintestinal manifestation of several gastrointestinal diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease(IBD), Whipple's disease, Behcet's disease, celiac disease, intestinal bypass surgery, parasitic infections of the gut and pseudomembranous colitis. Moreover about two thirds of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug users demonstrate intestinal inflammation.Arthritis may manifest as a peripheral or axial arthritis. The spondyloarthropathy family consists of the following entities:ankylosing spondylitis, undifferentiated spondyloarthritis, reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, spondyloarthritis associated with IBD, juvenile onset spondyloarthritis. This topic reviews the major gastrointestinal manifestations that can occur in patients with SpA and in nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs users.
