This paper focuses on the analysis of his writing style as a news reporter and as a literary writer in order to investigate whether there exists some links between the two or whether his training as a reporter has any effect on his writing as fiction writer. By employing a corpus-based stylistic approach, the paper analyzes in great details Hemingway's early news writing in Kansas City Star ( 1917-1918) and his later fiction writing in the novella The Old Man and the Sea (1952). The stylistic features at lexical level are explored quantitatively in both writings via statistical data. The paper concludes that Hemingway's writing style has his own heritage. The style in his early news articles does find its way into his later fiction writing. There do exist certain similarities in the choices of lexical items and phrasal expressions. It also indicates that a further exploration on their syntactic, rhetorical, and discourse levels is needed ira fuller picture of Hemingway's writing style is to be unveiled.展开更多

In translating the western literature works, Lin Shu himself also began to engage in the creation of novels. Among them, the short story turns to be more complicated in the ideological tendency. Lin Shu' s simple democratic consciousness has been fully displayed in it, and it mainly reflects in the three aspects of exposing and criticizing of dark reality, gallant spirit publicity and free marriage praise.展开更多

Anima is one of the archetypes, which made both negative and positive influences in Poe's life and literary creation, leading him to be the master of poetry and short stories, but also consumed his life and caused his death in the prime. In the study about the influence of anima in Poe, Anima was proved acting as the feminine complement factors in Poe's unconscious, and made Poe more sensitive in literary creation. As Poe knew the man's world and also understood the woman's world, which is the accumulative influence of both negative and positive influences of Anima in Poe, his literary creativity was strong and he had the unique aesthetics.展开更多

The novel was strictly and prudently organized by Fitzgerald, which used lots of writing techniques and skills, such as symbolism, analogy and so on. These techniques contributed to deepen theme and increase artistic appeal. In this novel, Fitzgerald portrays the real state of American society vividly in 1920s with cold attitude and subtle analysis. This is the most typical tragicomedy about the realization and vanishment of "American dream" that describes the love tragedy between Gatsby and Daisy.展开更多

One of the most underrated Christmas Books, The Chimes (1844), proves to be an excellent example of a new fairy tale portraying the pervasion of two spheres: the realm of fantasy and the truth. The narrator exposes the correlation between the disturbing vision of the animated metropolis and the protagonist's hallucinatory fancy caused by his inner unrest and agitation, questioning the boundary between the dream and reality and the limits of perception. Despite the technical restraints of the seasonal miniature's construction, Dickens succeeded in capturing the hero's psychology and the spirit of the city through the medium of anthropomorphising the inanimate, employing the supernatural, and implementing powerful, semantically loaded images of London corresponding well with the protagonist's inner dilemmas. The narrative strategy balancing on the edge of dream and reality employed in the carol does not only expose the creative skills of the novelist, but also the potential of The Chimes as an embryonic novel展开更多

At the same time, literary texts themselves sometimes have a tendency to resist cultural narratives and stereotypical ideas of a certain nation. This article explores how such a resistance is made in the English translations of four Swedish novels from the 1930s. These novels are all central texts in the history of Swedish literature, as they form the very basis of a literary current that had a huge impact on the development of the Swedish welfare state--proletarian fiction. In the translations of Harry Martinson's, Moa Martinson's, Eyvind Johnson's, and Ivar Lo-Johansson's breakthrough novels, the Anglophone target reader is faced with different kinds of disruptions of the Swedish national identity. Some of these disturb the conception of Sweden as a unified cultural space; others resist the idea of Sweden as a distinct cultural space. There is, however, no general rule to these disruptions: All four novels have their own, specific way of creating narrative resistance.展开更多
